15.01.2022 Creative Spotlight celebrates our Creative City with a weekly ‘spotlight’ on creators and artists in Hobsons Bay. Showcasing a wide range of local creatives, w...e will delve into each artists practice, explore their passions and learn about their current projects. This week we celebrate our Creative City with local media producer Martin Case. What do you love about Hobsons Bay? What I am most appreciating about Hobsons Bay is the community. Having arrived here four years ago, I have been fortunate enough to have meet many creative and passionate people working towards improving our community. The concerted efforts of the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, the Hobsons Bay City Council initiatives, the Newport Folk and Fiddle Club; all of these Hobsons Bay institutions before the present crisis were consistently improving our community, and I love how our community has worked together to alleviate some of the repercussions of the current pandemic. What is your creative practice? "I am a composer, performing musician, and multi-media producer. I perform on saxophones, W African percussion, and piano/keyboards. Through my company, Martin Case Media Productions, I assist artists create the media materials they need to represent their work, i.e. studio recordings, video/photo productions, websites, and image. One criteria for a successful artist is ‘giving back’, so in their branding they have a cause they champion. Second phase the Campaign: I ask the artist to visualize where they are in their career 18 months from now and reverse-engineer the process. What do you love about what you do? I love connecting various artists, causes and institutions to create work that brings our community together. By using my skills in service, with community, we create manifestations of art that I would not conceive on my own. What are you looking forward to post COVID? Many of the programs that I am working on are geared to the first and second phases of lockdown. The first phase entailed facilitating community contact though zoom portals, and the second phase is creating safe environments for people once restrictions are lifted. I am looking forward to rehearsals with my jazz ensemble Visionary-Steel and directing a West African drum ensemble when restrictions ease. Martin Case is a Composer, performing musician, and multi-media producer. He performs on saxophones, W African percussion, and piano/keyboards. Martin is currently delivering Hobsons Bay ArtSpeak, a series of six interviews with artistic directors, composers, and performing musicians who reside in Hobsons Bay, supported through Council’s Art Apart rapid response initiative grant aimed at supporting the local arts community during the Covid 19 crisis.
