16.01.2022 At the end of service on Sunday 21st February 2021, Hochi Mama will cease operations from 11 Liverpool Street in the heart of Melbourne CBD Mama’s movin’ on up & movin on out to a bigger, bolder, and more dynamic CBD space! The vibrancy and fervour that is synonymous with Mama’s forever-heaving CBD home has been the culmination of six eventful, flavourful, and fun-filled years in our little slice of graffiti-laden Liverpool Street. During our laneway lifetime, we’ve slung... countless cocktails and induced many worthwhile hangovers, hosted thousands of celebratory shindigs and endured many excruciatingly awkward first dates, and wokked-up oodles of noodles for the hoards of rambunctious local and international admirers all of whom are never strangers once they leave Mama’s house. We’ve been a part of kickstarting the fun and witnessing the progressive transformation of Liverpool Street from a forgotten city thoroughfare to a bustling avenue of partygoers peppered with celebrated Melbourne hospitality destinations. We’re immeasurably thankful for our community of magnificent local residents and badass neighbouring venues for all their support over our tenure at 11 Liverpool Street particularly throughout the past COVID-stricken year of operation. Whilst we’re saddened to be vacating the hallowed grounds of Mama’s OG home, we’re not leaving the block like J.Lo did! Our newest venue space will be bigger, bolder, and more dynamic than ever whilst still retaining Mama’s soulful approach to her unique brand of hospitality. Read @thecitylane and the little history lesson they’ve shared about Liverpool Street CBD! ‘I've walked through, and dined along here many times, but only recently did I learn about Liverpool Street's colourful history. Liverpool Street was originally known as Juliet Terrace (renamed in 1890), and frequented by "women of the night". On nearby Romeo Lane (renamed Crossley Street in 1876), men did their thing. Both lanes led t...o the now long demolished Bilking Square. Bilking Square was never an official place. It didn't appear on any maps but everyone knew what went on there. It was named for bilking, the practice of prostitutes stealing intended customers' wallets after inviting them into bed with a promise of sexual favours. Pickpockets, pimps, thieves, con artists, and murderers all frequented the notorious district.’ I wonder how many of the diners in this photo know what used to go on around here.
