18.01.2022 We'd like to introduce you to the next Community Ambassador for our Multicultural Engagement Program with the Australian International Sports Organisation. Char...ishma Kaliyanda is an elected councillor for Liverpool City Council, located in south-west Sydney. She is also registered Occupational Therapist and currently works for headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation. Charishma was raised in Liverpool after, like many other Liverpool residents, migrating to the area with her family as a young girl. Charishma is a champion for diversity in sport, as a Multicultural Ambassador for Hockey NSW (and a keen footballer!), and youth participation in civic leadership. She is proud to be one of only 11 women elected to Council in Liverpool's 144-year history, and one of the youngest. Charishma was named one of Australia’s rising political stars by Marie Claire, and was twice pre-selected as a candidate for NSW Parliament before she turned 30, earning attention as one of the women to watch in NSW politics by Women’s Agenda. Please join us in welcoming Charishma on board!

02.01.2022 Today, we proudly celebrate the beginning of NAIDOC week. We are proud to have a rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in our spor...t, and we look forward to launching our new Indigenous Engagement Program in 2021. Hockey NSW respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands throughout NSW on which we play our great game. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
02.01.2022 Another common problem is in youth sports where the strongest player over dribbles the ball. This does several things to the team. The team does not learn to pa...ss the ball under pressure and when the team plays stronger teams which can stop the dribbler the team usually loses. The second thing is that the player dribbling the ball against weaker teams successfully received the wrong psychological reinforcement that they are doing the right thing. The next problem is that the dribbler NEVER learns how to pass the ball. The next problem is that the dribbler monopolizes the ball and the rest of the players don't learn how to dribble the ball. The next problem is that the team does not learn to run off the ball and receive a pass. Dribblers don't get selected for high level teams. Dribblers are destructive in terms of team building. Dribblers don't score as many goals as they should because they don't know when to release the ball and do not work 1/2's with other players on their team to exploit the space created by their dribbling. Stick work should be used to draw two players to the ball carrier and to set up the next pass to the open player. Over dribbling is a curse on some players who just don't understand that hockey is s team sport and by over dribbling the ball they drag their team down.

01.01.2022 We’d like to introduce you to Sonny Chadha, another one of our fantastic Community Ambassadors working with our Multicultural Engagement Program. I was born i...n England and as a family we migrated to Sydney in the mid 1970's. I first started playing hockey in 1980 with Dundas junior hockey club. I was a young kid with long hair - a Sikh. Sydney hockey was different in the 1970's and 1980's. There was little migration from non European countries. Therefore if you looked different, you were often the target of unwanted questions and faced some very harsh racism and prejudices. Most young hockey players and their families were curious and wanted to learn. Many of which have become life long friends Back then, hockey as young kids was played full field and on grass - none if this quarter and half field games. There was no hockey in school. Rugby League was the primary sport and then a distant second was football / soccer. I have been lucky enough to play the wonderful sport of hockey. 40 years without missing a season. Hockey has grown well in that time, there are many local and international social tournaments that one can participate in. One of the largest is the Sikh games that began back in the late 1980's. I was lucky enough to play and then build the tournament in its early years. When I worked in London and Singapore, the love of hockey enabled me to join local clubs and quickly make friends as well as showing me some other perspectives of hockey. I am still playing hockey on Saturdays and masters during the week. My kids are now playing hockey, I have managed to help out in coaching and the administration side of things. Hockey has provided me with discipline, fitness, friendship and most of all enjoyment. I am very proud to be a NSW Hockey Ambassador and help promote the wonderful joys, healthy living and friendships that hockey has to offer. It is one of the most inclusive sports. I am honoured to be giving back to a sport that provides so much.
