24.01.2022 ***Important announcement*** As you all know I absolutely LOVE bringing you sensory playgroup. However, I need pause our regular play sessions. Unfortunately I received some concerning news recently that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This means I will need to take a step back from our sensory play session and focus on my health over the next several months.... So this is just a pause on our regular play sessions... I look forward to welcoming you all back face to face as soon as possible. I plan to bring the occasional sensory fun sessions throughout term 4 (so please keep engaging with our social media so you can be part of the upcoming events that you will be able to book online). I will do my best to continue some form of sensory play online each week with engaging fun activities you can try at home too. Be sure to follow, like & share our posts on Facebook and Instagram (& join our Facebook group too ‘Holdfast Sensory Playgroup’). I’d like to take a moment to thank you all for being part of our sensory playgroup community, you all bring me amazing joy and I love seeing your little ones thrive, learn and grow through sensory play. Also huge thanks to our amazing helpers, Sally, Carla, Lucy, Mandy, Vanessa, Fiona, Julie and all the other awesome helpers who’ve been part of our wonderful playgroup over the years. Playgroup has always been a place I’ve found joy, positivity and a fun place to stretch my creativity! At the moment I am still in shock. However I am feeling positive and confident that I am in the best hands here and above. 24.01.2022 Dinosaur Pasta Play Cool some pasta (or used the left overs from last nights dinner) add some dinosaurs along with a pasta scoop and tongs... you’ve got yourself a super fun sensory play activity!... This is a super popular activity for children and babies of all ages. Watch them play and see the delight on their faces! This activity can be adapted to do in the highchair or bath too. Have fun! 19.01.2022 Sensory Dinosaur Christmas Tree One of the popular activities enjoyed by all the children and babies (well most... some found the texture too much ). Pasta noodles with some green food colouring added after cooking (I also added some olive oil after cooking to keep pasta smooth), some dinosaurs as decorations, Christmas beads and a tree base made from a frozen block of water and dinosaurs ... A sensory Christmas sensation! The children really immersed themselves in this activity - as you can see from the ‘after’ photo it was very well used. 15.01.2022 Dinosaur Treasure Hunt! Children love a treasure hunt. So collect all your dinosaur toys, ask your children to close their eyes while you hide the dinosaurs around the garden (or inside). Go on a hunt! How fast will they find them all??!!... Extend the activity by drawing your own dinosaurs and colour them in - paint or even make a dinosaur out of cardboard boxes. Then hide the dinosaurs they have created. This is a great way to extend the play outside, and encourage outdoor fun. 11.01.2022 Toe print art Have you tried toe print art with your little one? This is a great sensory art activity for babies. Using nontoxic, washable paint, paint toes, then press onto paper or we used a wooden reindeer ornament - makes a great keepsake to pop on the tree.... (Remember to put the year & name of child on the back... you’d be surprised at how over the years you forget which child did what - trust me - I’ve learnt from experience ) Use lots of describing words as you go... How does it feel? Squishy, tickle, cool, slippery What colours are used? Name the colours as you go. This helps develop literacy skills and sensory processing. 08.01.2022 Oh Christmas Tree! Inspired by our sensory pasta play Christmas tree, our wonderful playgroup helper, Mandy, decided to make a Christmas tree meal. The perfect way to bring sensory Christmas to the dinner table... a feast for the senses indeed! ... what can you see? Name the colours... close your eyes, what can you smell? can you hear the pasta as it slurps into your mouth? what does green pasta taste like? To make this fun meal at home you’ll need: 1) pasta & food colouring (add a few drops of food colouring to strained pasta once it has cooked & stir through - you may like to add a little olive oils too to keep pasta smooth) 2) meatballs for ornaments 3) pasta sauce & cheese for tinsel 4) cheese for star & tree base Love to see your photos if you make this at your place! 04.01.2022 Sensory rice tray Have you made a sensory rice tray? This is an easy activity to set up and if you use a shallow container with a lid (we got this one from the supermarket), it is easy to pack up & put away for another playtime. Great to develop fine motor skills, maths skills/ measurements, colours, sensory development and most importantly a fun and engaging activity for little hands. (Remember to watch children play especially with small parts... some children thought the... Pom poms were marshmallows & wanted to eat them ). You need: Container Rice (uncooked) Food colouring (just add a few drops to rice put on lid & shake) Small scoops* Mini buckets* Pom poms* *all from @cheapaschipsaus For an added sensory experience add a few drops of peppermint oil for some candy cane Christmas inspiration or some of your favourite essential oil. 04.01.2022 Cool down this Christmas with sensory ice play! A different way to experience water play when it’s frozen. Fill some containers with water and Christmas baubles for this super easy and fun sensory play activity. ... We used clean butter and ice cream tubs ones with lids work well as this hold the baubles in the water while they freeze. 01.01.2022 Tomorrow in SA is set to be a warm day A fun sensory activity for hot days is ice play! Freeze some dinosaurs in a tub of water (or other animals work too). Pop them on a toddler table with a lip around the edge (so ice doesn’t slide off and fall on little toes), or in a tub on the ground. Children can enjoy spinning the ice, feeling the cold, picking up the slippery blocks and trying to break free the dinosaurs inside....
