25.01.2022 ITS WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK Today is the first day of world breastfeeding week. This year the focus is on supporting breastfeeding for a healthier planet. ... As a Lactation Consultant I am so passionate about supporting and promoting breastfeeding in our community. This week each day I am going to share a breastfeeding topic that International Board Certified Lactation Consultants are trained to support. Many people are surprised to hear what I do for work. Many have never heard of or considered breastfeeding support as a "job". Often thinking if breastfeeding is challenging or problems come up that a woman is unable to breastfeed when actually it is the role of an IBCLC to support and fix these issues. Lactation Consultants have a wide scope of practice in breastfeeding problems and as part of World Breastfeeding week I would love to help promote what our profession do, as well as the types of challenges we are trained to assist with. #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 #breastfeeding #frankston #ibclc #lactationconsultant #breastmilk #morningtonpeninsulamums #melbournemums #breastfeedingmatters #

24.01.2022 **Two years my love. ** Today is a really special day for me. Today I reached my breastfeeding goal. Today my son has been breastfeeding for two YEARS. That's 730 days of this beautiful relationship and I wouldn't change it for the world. I was so very lucky to have the knowledge I did to help me achieve my breastfeeding goals. Being a lactation consultant and a mum has given me so much insight into being on the other side of this journey. ... The world health organisation recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed to 6 months and continued to be breastfed to two years and beyond. I am so very proud of my journey and so pleased we have reached this milestone. I see no end in the near future and that's totally fine with me. 20.01.2022 HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY DOT Dot was one of the first babies I saw with Holistic Lactation Consulting. I am so happy to hear from her mumma on her first birthday they are still loving their breastfeeding journey. Tess has returned to work some months ago and has managed to maintain her breastfeeding relationship. Many mums worry that you can't do both. That if you breastfeeding you are completely restricted. ... But this isn't true. Reaching the 1 year mark is absolutely possible even on returning to work. I was so lucky to help Tess out with both her beautiful babies and it has been my absolute pleasure. Your persistence and determination to reach your breastfeeding goals has been amazing and I wish you both the very best for the next chapter of your breastfeeding journey. *Story and photo shared with permission* #breastfeedingwithconfidence #breastmilk #breastfeedingsupport #IBCLC #lactationconsultant #breastmilk #oneyearofbreastfeeding #workingmoms #breastfeedingatwork #happybirthday #onetoday.

19.01.2022 We are open during the lockdown !! During lockdown in Victoria, Holistic Lactation Consulting will continue to stay open. We are an essential service for breastfeeding mothers and their families and we are committed to serve our communities to the best of our abilities. Breastfeeding is a vital part of the protection of the human immune system and so it is essential that women continue to have access to breastfeeding support during these unprecedented times. ... However going forward we will require you to adhere to the strict Covid-19 restrictions in place. If you or any of your family members were exposed to or had Covid-19 in the past 14 days, we will be unable to book you in at the clinic. Additionally, if you have any flu like symptoms we will need to cancel or postpone your appointment. Alternatively we are able to organise a zoom consultation to address your concerns. It saddens me to say but partners will not be able to join mums in the clinic anymore. In order to continue to provide breastfeeding services this is an unfortunate but necessary step. We will send out a Covid-19 checklist for you to go through prior to attending the clinic and this is to ensure all of our safety. We welcome you to wear gloves and masks for your protection and myself if you choose to. We have taken necessary precautions during this pandemic to ensure our clients attending the clinic are safe and understand the importance of hygienic practices. We have cleaners in place to ensure the clinic is safe for you and hand washing and sanitizer facilities are also available for your safety. We thank you for your understanding in advance and together we will make our communities Covid safe. #breastfeedingsupport #covid #melbournelockdown #lactationconsultant #Frankston #breastfeedingmelbourne #breastmilk #breastfedbaby #ibclc #morningtonpeninsulamums #newparent

18.01.2022 Wishing all the dad's out there a very happy father's Day. We know from research that a supportive partner is one of the most important factors in whether a woman successfully reaches her breastfeeding goals. As hard as it can be to stand back on those hard nights, to watch the mother of your baby upset when feeding is painful or not working out. If you feel the need to help out call out a Lactation Consultant. By introducing formula and bottle feeds we effect supply, poten...tially a babies suck, risk a bottle preference, increase risk of engorgement or mastitis but most importantly we chip into that mums confidence. Please know that your support in keeping her strong is where you help the most. "Feed mum not bub" get her a tea, make all her meals, feed her if she needs, keep the house as she likes it. And please if she is struggling, call her a Lactation Consultant. Happy father's Day to the amazing men that love our babies more than anything. You are loved and appreciated everyday but let today be even more special. #fathersday #dadscanhelptoo #dads #breastmilk #breastfeedingsupport #newparents #newdads

18.01.2022 Holistic Lactation Consulting is excited to announce we are officially a stockist for QIARA PROBIOTICS. Qiara probiotics are a very important component of mastitis management and prevention. They are evidence based and well studied to ensure they assist in repairing the imbalance of healthy bacteria in human milk. ... Lactobacillus Fermentum CECT5716 is a bacteria that protects your breasts from infection. Most women have a healthy amount of it in their milk. Unfortunately the healthy balance can be effected by the use of antibiotics in labour, post birth or for mastitis management. This puts a mother at risk of mastitis. Qiara is specifically designed to replace the good bacteria and help prevent breast infection. If you are breastfeeding and have had mastitis or had it last time you breastfed then Qiara may be an essential part of your journey. To celebrate becoming a local stockist we are having and sale until the end of July. Pick up from our Frankston clinic for only $75.00 a box. 14.01.2022 Breastfeeding and Coronavirus. What do we know so far? From small studies out China we know that coronavirus is not transmitted via breast milk. It can be given to a baby by an infected mother because they are in close contact. Good hand hygiene and wearing face masks can help prevent transmission if a mother is infected. . ... Breastfeeding provides a baby with immune protection like no other. When a baby is exposed to an illness their saliva gives important information to the mother's body via the breast to ensure she creates antibodies specific to that Illness. In this global crisis breastfeeding is more important than ever. By protecting our babies and young toddlers from Coronavirus we help #flattenthecurve and take strain off healthcare. Currently breastfeeding is the most important and effective way to protect a newborn from infections. If you or someone you know is having trouble breastfeeding their baby contact me via my website linked in bio or txt 0403746113 Office visits, home visits and phone consults available. #coronavirus #flattenthecurve #covid_19 #coronavirusaustrailia #breastfeeedingsupport #breastmilk #lactationfrankston #lactationconsultant #IBCLC #health #globalpandemic

13.01.2022 Breastfeeding in public. I have posted about this before, however this week the importance of breastfeeding in public has hit home. This week the reality of how strong the message we are sending has really impacted me. ... When children see babies being fed using bottles in cafes, food courts, their prams and at parks, this is what they are seeing. Meanwhile, women often feel they need to hide or be discreet while breastfeeding, leading to breastfed babies being fed and hidden in toilets. This is sending a VERY strong message to our children and the next generation of parents. As my son's language develops it is so interesting to get a glimpse of what goes on in his world. When my friend had her baby last week I asked my almost 2 year old breastfed toddler "where do babies get their milk from?" to which he replied "a bottle". As a lactation consultant, a breastfeeding advocate and a breastfeeding mum I have to say my heart sunk a little. Why did he think that? Most of his friends are breastfed, he is breastfed! Why did he think babies get milk from bottles? At first I just corrected him and explained that babies get milk from "boo-boos". The next day at the shop we see a baby in his pram feeding himself a bottle, my son very loudly yelled "mummy look baby bottle" and then it clicked....Everywhere we go, that's what he sees. Children learn more from what they see, hear and have modelled to them, compared to what they are told. He doesn't think of himself as a baby, so to him all the babies he sees are drinking milk from a bottle. It's actually quite rare to see a baby breastfeeding in public. If we want to improve our breastfeeding rates then it is SO important that we start to challenge how we think about breastfeeding and women breastfeeding in public. Next time you see a Breastfeeding mother, give her a smile and maybe take some time to open the dialogue with your children. Tell them this is natural and beautiful. Help them to grow up normalising breastfeeding. #breastfeedinginpublic #melbournemums #breastfeeding #lactationconsultant #mumlife #frankston #morningtonpeninsula #ibclc

12.01.2022 Such beautiful words. Motherhood is intense, it can be relentless at times and it's normal to crave that "me time" you used to get. But it's posts like this one that bring us back. That remind us just how fleeting this time is. Just how lucky we are to have this dependant little human who loves us and needs us so intensely. They won't for long. Soon they will be more independent and not need your comfort. And these memories of the times they wouldn't let you put them down ...will pass. You won't ever regret cuddling them and kissing them too much. At the moment my 2 year old has entered the "I do a self" phase and I can see the beginnings of his independence as he plays more on his own. I look back at him a year ago, and I think, a year from now he will need me less again. So I'll soak up my morning cuddles as I lie in bed with my sleeping little boy who is gently holding my hand. #lactationfrankston #lactationconsultant #breastfeeedingsupport #breastfeedingtonaturalterm #breastmilk #IBCLC #IBCLCfrankston #gentleparenting #cuddlethosebabies #motherhood #mumlife

12.01.2022 Today is pregnancy and infant loss day. Today we pay special attention to a side of motherhood that is often overlooked, or hidden. Pregnancy and infant loss affects 1 in 4 women. That is huge. ... No matter how early, no matter how late in pregnancy the loss is a loss. And one that is felt so deeply. To all the mums and dads out there who are grieving the baby that was loved but never held, we see you. We acknowledge your pain. Not just today but everyday. Lots of love to the 1 in 4 women in my life who live with this pain everyday. #pregnancyandinfantlossawareness #pregnancyandinfantlossawarenessmonth #pregnancyandinfantloss #misscarriage #stillbirth #infantloss #IBCLC #pregnancy

11.01.2022 LOW BREASTMILK SUPPLY Have you been told that you have low milk supply? Firstly, who has told you this? And how are they helping you to fix it? ... There is a very small proportion of women who cannot make enough milk to feed their babies. This includes women with a history of mastectomy, breast surgeries, and hormonal issues. However it is extremely rare that a woman makes no breastmilk at all for her baby. Almost all women can make a portion of their babies intake. When a mum is told she has low milk supply It can be very upsetting and often leads to stress around breastfeeding. If you feel you may not produce enough milk it is so important to see your local IBCLC. It is our role to work with you and your baby to address the concerns and work out if you do in fact have a low supply and how we can fix this. Frequency and efficiency of milk removal is extremely important in the maintenance of milk supply. If for some reason the milk transfer is limited this will effect supply in time. For the overwhelming majority of women with low supply it is caused by a breastfeeding problem or feeding issue not by a physiological reason. If you think you have low supply get in contact with a lactation consultant they are the experts in addressing this issue. #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 #breastfeeding #lactationconsultant #milksuppy# Frankston #melbourne #morningtonpeninsulamums #breastfeeding #expressing

11.01.2022 Pumping. Expressing milk is important for many reasons Whether it be to build milk supply, store milk for times we won't be able to breastfeed, help clear ducts or to donate to another mum and bub, it is important to have a good quality pump and to ensure the flange is the correct size. In our house pumping is for donating milk to some much loved mums and bubs. So far our journey has shared over 15 l of breastmilk. ... Each morning I pump once a day and over time I have allowed by supply to build and build at that time of day. By pumping a little more each time. This morning in got 260ml from my left side using my @spectrababy S2 pump. (The manual silicon pump was just for storing the excess) Lactation is amazing. My body can recognise the times of day I need high supply (pumping time) and the times of day I don't. It's a time to shower them with gifts they will need when their bundle of joy finally arrives. Why not gift an appointment with a lactation consultant. 09.01.2022 Feeding to sleep. The biological norm. Not a bad habit, not unhealthy, THE NORM. Feeding to sleep is the easiest and most natural way to put your baby to sleep. The hormones in the milk provide babe with comfort and relaxation. Those same hormones improve your sleep. ... When babies feed to sleep they drain the breasts well. This ensures supply is maintained and weight gain remains healthy. Feeding to sleep also reduces the risk of mastitis because the milk is not remaining in the breasts. If someone is telling you that by feeding your baby to sleep you are doing something wrong, they are misinformed. This is the foundation of healthy breastfeeding. Look at those beautiful eyes. So calm, so safe, so satisfied.

09.01.2022 Let's talk about Nipple pain. This is such a big issue for new mums when they start out on their journey. Nipple pain is one of the most common reasons that women will choose to wean. I see so many mums having to "tough it out" in those early weeks, constantly being told if is normal. ... NIPPLE PAIN IS NOT NORMAL I can't stress this enough. Breastfeeding should not be painful. Tender for some women maybe. But if you are dreading the next feed, gritting your teeth through feeds, curling your toes? Have your latch checked by an IBCLC. That is what we do, we work with you to optimise your babies position to get the best latch. With a perfect latch your baby will be able to transfer milk effectively and you should only feel a tugging sensation. There is help out there in the community. Don't feel you need to put up with the pain, that pain is part of the package. It doesn't have to be like this. 08.01.2022 REFLUX So let's talk about reflux. Many babies are diagnosed and treated medically for reflux prior to having a thorough breastfeeding assesment with a qualified IBCLC. ... Now, some babies need treatment. I am not going to argue thelat they dont. There are absolutely babies who benefit from the use of medications to assist with the managment of reflux. However there are many babies who display signs of reflux, particularly silent reflux who actually have a breastfeeding problem. In my practice I have assisted many women to work through these challenges and work ay improving latching and milk production to ensure babe remains calm throughout and post feeding. Many women are told to space out feeds to improve reflux, this issue here is we then allow a baby to sit with an empty stomach for periods of the day and night. When they cry acid moves out of the stomach and causes pain in the oesophagus. When had their been frequent feeds the stomach contents is buffered with milk. "Reflux babies" often feed frequently and this is a protective mechanism for their discomfort. It also assists in maintaining milk supply. If your baby is needing treatment for reflux please see a feeding specialist. This is part of our role and we may be able to assist your baby to feed calmly and with no discomfort throughout the day. #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 #baby #slowweightgain #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #lactationconsultant #frankston #morningtonpeninsulamums #melbournemums #ibclc #lactationsupport #breastmilk #newmum #newparents

08.01.2022 Since the coronavirus pandemic has begun there has been an overwhelming rise in the number of local mums willing to share their milk to help families who are not able to source infant formula at this time. It is absolutely amazing to see the love in our community when it comes to milk sharing. It is a shame that we are still having issues with formula sourcing and that families are watering down formula. It is never safe to water down formula for babies as the dosing is made... just right and can lead to mineral imbalances. At Holistic LC I am doing my best to keep up with demand on the increasing number of mums wanting to breastfeed, increase supply or even relactate. If you are unsure of what your options are or would like to share your milk but are not sure how to do so I have availability for phone consultations and am happy to help out with your breastfeeding questions. To all my beautiful clients, colleagues, friends and followers I would like to take this post to announce that it is time for me to take a short break from Consulting and have some much needed rest as we await the arrival of our second baby. I am so grateful to have been able to support so many mums during what has been such a challenging entrance into motherhood for many. ... These past few months have been stressful on everyone but I would like to acknowledge the resilience of our new parents as they tackle ever changing rules and regulations in hospital policies, changing expectations of maternity care, lack of support in the community, a change in how they envisioned their pregnancy and obviously the grief associated with not being able to share your precious new baby with the people you love the most. I hear you and I know it's hard but you can do this and your baby is grateful for you and your love. I wish every new family the very best for the next few months. Remember you are strong, you can do this and keep on boobin those beautiful babies. Please seek breastfeeding help from your local support services. 07.01.2022 Happy birthday Bonnie Today is a special day for Holistic Lactation Consulting. Today the very first little baby I saw, has turned ONE. ... A year ago I started out my journey as a private lactation consultant. After years of assisting new mums and bubs to breastfeed their babies it was time for me to challenge myself and start practicing privately. Holistic LC has been so wonderful and I have loved every consultation as much as my first one. Bonnie was just 5 days old and needed a bit of help with latching. Emma was determined to breastfeed for as long as she could but was having trouble with excruciating pain and needed some help. During that consultation I helped Emma to feel confident to latch Bonnie without pain, and there started the beginning of a beautiful breastfeeding journey. My heart is full as I hear that on her first birthday, Bonnie is still breastfeeding like a champ. Their breastfeeding journey has been beautiful and Emma is so proud of herself for persevering through those early days. 05.01.2022 SLOW WEIGHT GAINS Are you struggling to get your baby to gain weight? One of the most common presentations I see in my practice is babies who are either losing weight, struggling to regain birth weight or just tracking along with minimal gains at each check. ... Did you know that addressing weight gain is the role of an Internal Board Certified Lactation Consultant? Many women who really want to breastfeed are made to feel that they need to top up with formula if their baby is not gaining weight. Slow weight gain in a breastfeeding baby is a red flag for a breastfeeding problem. I can promise you that formula will not fix that problem. It will fix the weight issues and absolutely has its place as we work to address the course of bubs weight gains. But it is not the solution to the breastfeeding problem. Did you know that a lactation consultant is the best person to see if your breastfed baby is slow to gain weight? We can sit down with you and look into your babes feeding, their latch, evidence or milk transfer, frequency and efficiency of feeds as well as your supply. From there we can assist in bringing you back to exclusive breastfeeding and allow your baby to gain weight well. #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 #baby #slowweightgain #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #lactationconsultant #frankston #morningtonpeninsulamums #melbournemums #ibclc #lactationsupport #breastmilk #newmum #newparents

05.01.2022 The first breastfeed. "The golden hours". We call the first two hours of a babies life the "golden hours" because they are just that, GOLD. Absolute magic.... A mother meeting her baby for the first time earthside. A baby finally meeting the person who he has lived within for 9 special months. The woman whose heart was beating above him, whose voice has soothed him, whose love has shaped him. Finally they meet. This brand new baby has entered his new world. It's colder and bigger than anything he could imagine. It's louder and brighter and different. Scary even. But then he hears that heartbeat, that voice, he knows it, he recognises his mother's voice and he lies peacefully on her chest. Listening to that familiar sound. His instincts kick in and he begins to search for the breast. He has reflexes that help him. The rooting reflex helps him to find the nipple, the stepping reflex to make his way up her chest. When left undisturbed most babies will Naturally find the breast themselves, and begin to breastfeed for the very first time. By finding the breast themselves they lay down the pathways for future feeds. Making breastfeeding easier for that pair. The golden hours after birth should not be disturbed inless medically necessary. That baby does not need to be weighed or bathed or even vigorously rubbed with towels if it is breathing well. Imagine what a shock those procedures would be to a brand new bub. How they would affect the natural ability a baby has to find the breast. As health professionals we need to do our part to protect this time, don't force a baby onto breast. You wouldn't like someone forcing your head into your breakfast. Give that babe time. Because the forcing of a baby to have their first feed, while well meaning can result in a breast aversion that negatively affects that mums ability to breastfeed. Many women will tell me how traumatic that feed was, when a midwife "grabs their boob and shoved their baby onto it". It isn't needed and it does not help the breastfeeding journey. Relax, take your time and cherish, support and protect the golden hours. #goldenhours #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #IBCLC

04.01.2022 NIPPLE PAIN Ok so here's a big one. How many women have experienced significant nipple pain when feeding their baby? More interestingly did you know that some women have NEVER had nipple pain with feeding. ... When I became a mum I was a midwife and an IBCLC. I knew how to latch my baby well and ensure he was positioned well. As a result I never had nipple pain. (until I fed a toddler through early pregnancy). What I am getting as is that nipple pain is not normal. It is not something we have to experience or something that just passes on its own with time. I see day in and day out mums asking on Facebook about their damaged, cracked and bleeding nipples and peers telling them it will "pass" or its "normal". In some women it does pass. The baby grows and is able to adjust their latch themselves but for the most part nipple pain will result in early weaning. And here is why. When a baby latches on too shallow or incorrectly with not enough breast tissue the tongue thrusts the nipple into the hard palate and causes significant pain and often tissue damage. Not only is this extremely painful it also reduces milk flow. It compresses the ducts meaning half the milk for twice the work. It also effects your let down reflex and reduces milk transfer. This then leads to poor satiety for babe, slow weight gains, PAIN, symptoms of silent reflux, breast refusal, mastitis and low supply. It is SO SO SO Important that we do not normalise nipple pain in breastfeeding. It is another red flag for a breastfeeding problem and really needs to be seen by a qualified IBCLC. Lactation Consultants are here to help you reduce and remove nipple pain and get you breastfeeding comfortably. If you or someone you know has nipple pain. 04.01.2022 Milk drunk A baby's ability to drain the back potion of the breast helps them to be able to fall asleep at the breast. This is a positive sign assuming a baby has had a period of good sucking and swallowing and the breast is drained. Babies feeding to sleep is not a bad habit or harmful to them or you. It is the biological norm. It signifies a baby who breastfeeds well and let's face it, it's the easiest way to put a baby to sleep. ... Feeding to sleep also allows the mother to sleep better and deeper and to feel more rested despite the amount of sleep we get. Feeding to sleep helps prevent mastitis, keeps milk supply up and assists in healthy weight gain in bub. Don't let people tell you it's a bad habit. Love those sleepy milky eyes. #breastfeeding #lactationconsultant #newbaby #milkdrunk #feedingtosleep #Frankston #frankstonmums #morningtonpeninsula #morningtonpeninsulamums #ibclc #breastfeedingmelbourne
