25.01.2022 Gentle waterbirth.

20.01.2022 If there was one ritual I'd like to see banned before 40 weeks, it's the stretch-and-sweep, aka membrane stripping. The routine stretch-and-sweep is performed d...uring a vaginal exam at any time beginning around 37 weeks. Mothers are seldom told it was done. A stretch-and-sweep involves having the provider's gloved fingers manually stretch open the cervix and then strip the baby's amniotic sack away from the cervical opening. The baby's amniotic sack is normally adhered to the opening of the cervix in a way that prevents infectious agents from reaching the baby. It's one of pregnancy's many safe-guards. It's believed that manually dilating the cervix and separating the sack from the opening of the cervix will release extra prostaglandins that could stimulate labour. Only prostaglandins don't trigger normal labour. It's a hormone that ripens the cervix. It's actually the baby's lungs that trigger labour when they secrete a protein just when they're ready for air-breathing. Then oxytocin from mama's brain brings on contractions. A membrane stripping is intended to "prevent induction". What your provider is saying to you (if they tell you) is: "I will perform a mechanical induction to start labour artificially so that you might avoid a chemical induction after your due date with IV oxytocin in the hospital." Yes. A stretch-and-sweep is an induction that is meant to "prevent" induction. It is meant to bypass your baby's lungs and all of the safety mechanisms of human birth to get the baby out before the baby is ready. It can hurt. It can make you bleed. It can cause your water to break meaning you now are expected to go to the hospital for a chemical induction. It can introduce infection. Some studies say that doing a membrane stripping doesn't shorten pregnancy. Other studies say it can shorten pregnancy by a couple of days. All studies say it introduces many risks to you and your baby. . #pregnancy #whatyouneedtoknow #stretchandsweep #membranestripping #membranesweep

20.01.2022 A SURPRISE TWIN WATERBIRTH A completely missed twin pregnancy. Ultrasound did not pick up the other fetus, they only ever heard just one heartbeat and... she measured right on track for carrying only 1 baby. She birthed her first baby in the water and shortly after felt another strong contraction and another ring of fire. As to which she yelled out What the fuck?! The midwife said Oh, it’s probably the placenta coming. Another midwife said It’s a water bag, I’ve never seen that before. The whole room was in utter shock to see another baby come earthside and born encaul. The likelihood of another baby hidding in the womb is extremely minuscule, but it happened. Born at 38 weeks and 4 days, both babies weighed 6lbs 11oz, and both measured 20 inches. 20.01.2022 When the doctor told her that one of her twins didn't make it, she asked to hold him. What happened next is unbelievable.

19.01.2022 It's amazing what is left in that placenta! Don't cut the cord until it's white, your little one will thank you. Did you know 10% of the toddlers (1-3years) in... the US are iron deficient? Iron deficiency is more than just feeling tired, it can actually mean much more than that. Some research suggests that this deficit can cause lasting detrimental effects on cognitive function and neurodevelopment. "It is known that iron is essential for normal neurodevelopment in a number of animal models. ID affects neuronal energy metabolism, the metabolism of neurotransmitters, myelination, and memory function. These observations would explain the behavioral findings in human infants that have been associated with ID." http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/conte/126/5/1040.full

18.01.2022 Woah!! Amazing #Repost @inamaygaskin Mother pulling her baby to herself. Captured by @birthingwaymidwifery. What do you notice in this?

17.01.2022 When I was breeding horses years ago, we were taught to NEVER pull on an emerging placenta. Ever. Veterinarians know more about mammalian birth than most OB sta...ff, unfortunately. I’ve witnessed OBs and hospital midwives pull on umbilical cords, apply fundal pressure, and otherwise rush delivery of the placenta more often than not. I’ve seen many clients hemorrhage after birth due to the active management of placenta delivery. The majority of the time, forcing delivery of the placenta is both unnecessary and harmful. . . #Repost @bornathome_ with @get_repost This is NOT how a placenta should emerge. This is what happens when a provider’s convenience and lack of patience trumps nature. The process of hormone release in labor and postpartum is intricate, powerful, important, yet so delicate. We so often see birth and postpartum complications when we interrupt that mammalian process. The placenta MUST release from the uterine wall BEFORE it is removed. When a placenta is still attached to the uterine wall when a provider attempts to remove it, this is what happens. The cord can snap and the placenta can be torn into pieces which increases the chances of postpartum hemorrhage and retained placenta. A placenta can safely and comfortably take its sweet time releasing and emerging as long as mom is thriving. Your cervix can actually un-dilate after the birth of the baby and require re-dilation to birth the placenta. The BEST thing we can do for our placentas is delay cord clamping, immediate skin-to-skin with baby, and latch baby on as soon as possible. We want heavy oxytocin release in order for ideal placental emergence! Also, take charge of your own placental emergence. A provider should only intervene upon necessity. #Placenta Photos from @thejoyfultree

14.01.2022 See the photo below, which is of a 28 week gestation baby at the breast and breastfeeding at the age of 10 days. In many special care units, premature babies a...re not ‘allowed’ to go to the breast until they are 34 weeks gestation. This baby didn't read the book, I guess. For our article Breastfeeding the Premature, part 2, see when premature babies can and should start going to the breast: http://ibconline.ca/premature2/ ~Dr. Jack Newman, M.D. The optimal environment for the baby is on his mother’s chest, skin-to-skin, not in an incubator far from her comforting touch, voice, and smell. ~Dr. Nils Bergman; more on zero separation: https://tinyurl.com/y2gxkskj #YourBabyYourWay #breastfeeding #preemie #micropreemie #breastmilk #kangaroocare

11.01.2022 The concept of a 'due' date is something that is very abstract in many cultures. If, like in Uganda, you count a pregnancy by the moons, you end up having a 'du...e month' and baby comes when she is perfectly ripe without causing mama lots of anxiety. The very talented artist who created this beautiful illustration is Itaiana Battoni - Desenho Artístico.

10.01.2022 'Infants born at home may have more diverse gut bacteria, a new study has found. This difference could have an impact on a growing person's immunity and metabolism, so we ought to pay attention." Interesting. https://www.sciencealert.com/babies-born-at-home-have-more-

07.01.2022 "This is such a good teaching photo. Shows how, when there is that lull after the head is born, the chest area of the baby has moved down in the vagina and is g...etting a mighty squeeze to clear those little lungs of the fluid and mucous. (that's what is streaming out of the nose and mouth in this photo). This compression gets the lungs ready for breathing in air. Cutting an episiotomy prevents this compression and, so, the suction bulb came into use. Nature makes birth so perfect and we mess it up when we interfere. Thanks, Laurie Brant, for posting the photo and, if anyone knows who should be credited for the photo, please let us know." Gloria Lemay See more

07.01.2022 "This video is my second pregnancy and my tummy at 39 weeks. Less than two weeks later I gave birth to a 10lb 2 beauty at home!" But why is baby movement so imp...ortant? A reduction in a baby’s movements can sometimes be an important warning sign that a baby is unwell. Around half of women who had a stillbirth noticed their baby’s movements had slowed down or stopped. It is NOT true that babies move less towards the end of pregnancy. You should continue to feel your baby move right up to the time you go into labour and whilst you are in labour too. Get to know your baby’s normal pattern of movements. www.kickscount.org.uk (Video kindly sent in by Claire Loxton. If you have a video you'd be happy for us to use to raise awareness, please email [email protected])

06.01.2022 Writing a birth plan or birth preferences is a great chance to research your options for labour and birth. Make sure your birth partners know how to support you in your choices.

05.01.2022 How ridiculous!

04.01.2022 "Adults can put one leg out of the covers at night time if they’re too hot. Or open a window. Or take off a layer of clothing. But not babies. They will cry... out. Adults can get up and get a drink of water in the night if they’re thirsty. But not babies. They will cry out. Adults can turn on a light if they have a bad dream or are struggling to sleep. But not babies. They will cry out. Adults emotional needs are complex. Complicated. Diverse. They can rationalise and talk things through. But not babies. They will cry out. Adults can get aspirin if they have a head ache or feel unwell. But not babies. They will cry out. Babies crying is their way of communicating. And their needs don’t switch off at night. That doesn’t make it any easier. Being needed so intensely can be overwhelming and hard work.... People often write to me and ask how many times my daughter wakes at night. The truth is, I don’t know. They ask if she’s slept through the night ever. I’m not sure. I could drive myself crazy questioning why she still wakes. I could time her feeds. I could watch the clock. I could tally up the amount of times she wakes every night. But I won’t. Because the only answer I DO have is that she is going through something, and she needs me. The rest is just speculation. 01.01.2022 A lot of women have replied to the media call out re: being forced into an induction. Ten days ago we had national media about 43% of low risk women being induc...ed. Tell us about your experience. Were you fully informed about the risks and benefits of induction? Did you feel pressured? What "one liners" were used to make you "comply"? 01.01.2022 Familiar... - Repost from @birthofamama using - CRYING TOGETHER THROUGH BIRTH ~ LOVING TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE ~ @gypsynspice . SO, this is a whole picture birth... where everyone is crying. And it’s uncomfortable because you never see videos like that. I think when you have another baby, you ask something really big of your other babies. You ask them to grow up. Whether they are in the room watching or not. And I asked and watched Lilly become reborn into a big sister. And you know what? In all those hundreds of birth videos we watched to prepare us for this moment, we never saw one where the older sibling cried. I wonder why that is. Surely, Lilly isn’t the first? And so Lilly cried, Jacob cried, and I cried. And the three of us cried together as we brought baby June into our family. I love you @ovlacekaj and I love watching your love grow @lillynjune #birthofmama #birthofasister and that is our AMAZING birth photographer @valerieblakephotography snapping away silently { thank you , thank you @gypsynspice } See more
