25.01.2022 Have you been told you need a DEXA scan? This is a special kind of x-ray used to detect bone loss in our skeletons. People at risk of, or those that have osteoporosis may require a DEXA scan every now and then to check their levels and determine the severity of bone loss, which leaves our bones more prone to fractures. DEXA = Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Now that’s a mouthful! #osteo #osteopathy #DEXAscan

25.01.2022 Did you know that exercise is one of the best tools at your disposal for reducing stress?! Try to set some time aside each day to get active. If you can’t fit in a gym session (or simply don’t feel like it), then how about a brisk walk in a local park surrounded by nature? You can just feel the stress melting away! #osteo #osteopath #stress #stressmanagement

25.01.2022 Have you recently started to experience pain at the side of your hip? Perhaps you’re embracing your new healthy lifestyle and have been going for a solid run several times a week Or it might just be that you’re getting a bit older, hitting the middle decades of life, and you’ve had a nagging hip for a while. There are a few structures in and around the hip that can lead to pain felt at the very outer aspect of it. Problems in the low back, the hip joint itself, and soft tissues that surround the joint can all be viable culprits. 25.01.2022 Our founding father, Andrew Taylor Still, once said When you have adjusted the physical to its normal demands, nature supplies the remainder. A deeply important principle to osteopathy underpins this quote That structure governs function in the body. Osteopaths do not heal disease; we try to create the ideal environment for the body to heal itself.

23.01.2022 Ever taken a ball smack bang on the end of your fingers when trying to catch, forcing your finger(s) backwards? This type of injury can lead to a condition called Mallet Finger where the tendon which helps to straighten the end part of your finger ruptures or breaks away with some of the bone still attached. This leaves your fingertip in a bent position. Most cases of Mallet Finger recover well with splinting and hands on treatment to maintain function of the hand, wrist and upper limb. Who has experienced this before? Let us know below! #osteopathy #osteo #malletfinger

23.01.2022 Want to do your bit for the environment? We love all things environmentally friendly. Take a second to check out https://www.worldenvironmentday.global and join the planet in celebrating World Environment Day 2020.

23.01.2022 The femur, or thigh bone, is widely regarded as the strongest bone in the body. It is also the longest bone. Just think of all the weight it has to hold up when we walk and run. Don’t feel bad, it gets a rest when we sit and lie down! Give us a below if you knew this already!

22.01.2022 A healthy neck can rotate 90 degrees to each side, giving us an arc of movement of up to 180 degrees. We’re not quite up there with an owl (up to 270 degrees rotation!), but that’s pretty good in our opinion Half of the rotation in our necks comes from just one segment The connection between the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Stiff neck? Come and see us and we’ll have you moving before you can say ‘blind spot’... #osteo #osteopath #neck #rotation #stiffneck

21.01.2022 It’s time to stretch (like a cat)! The cat stretch is a great stretch for the spine. So let’s break it down 1. Get onto your hands and knees with your spine in a neutral position 2. Drop your head down between your shoulders and try to tuck your tailbone underneath you 3. Arch your back up into the air and hold Breathe. 4. Slowly return to normal, repeat

21.01.2022 The biceps muscle in your arm has ‘two heads’ - a short and long head. The long head of the biceps is prone to irritation with repetitive use of the shoulder (i.e. throwing sports). This can lead to pain in the front of the shoulder and weakness during arm movements. Do you have shoulder pain? Comment below and we’ll get you on the right path ASAP

20.01.2022 Have you ever had your hand forced backwards trying to catch a ball, causing pain? You could have ‘sprained’ a ligament in your wrist. A sprain occurs when a force acting on the strong tissues that hold your bones together is too great, causing the tissue to over-stretch or tear. Sprained ligaments usually take around six weeks to heal, but come and see us first and we’ll tell you exactly what to do and when to do it! After all, following the right recovery journey will ensure you recover quickly and safely!

20.01.2022 Painful knee? Do you walk, run or cycle a lot? Even more so now we’re in isolation? You may not be a professional runner, but you could have ‘Runner’s knee’, a term used to describe pain around the side and front of the kneecap during repetitive movements as described above. It com-monly affects runners (hence the name), but it can also affect skiers, football players and people who jump a lot. Females (sorry ladies!) and the overweight population are more prone to develop this problem. But don’t worry, we can help! Don’t suffer with knee pain - call us now on 0439379847

20.01.2022 You wouldn’t think it, but walking is actually a pretty complex activity! Did you know that you use around 200 muscles in just a single step? Walking uses the foot, leg, gluteal and hip muscles, plus a bunch of stabilising muscles to help keep you upright! Now, imagine having a small issue in just one or two of these muscles it can throw out your gait or walking pattern, causing imbalances and other issues, as well as pain. Don’t worry, because we can help fix your issues and restore your normal function. Want to know more? Let us know below and we can schedule you an appointment!

20.01.2022 November’s word of the month is ‘Coeliac’ (pron. see-lee-ac). Coeliac is the name given to a disease where people are unable to tolerate gluten in their diet. Gluten is a protein found in wheat products, as well as barley and rye. Coeliac disease leads to damage of the lining of the small intestine which then leads to poor nutrient absorption by the body (aka malnutrition). This condition affects both sexes and all ages. If you’re coeliac and have a delicious gluten-free recipe recommendation, please share #osteo #osteopathy #wordofthemonth #coeliacdisease

19.01.2022 Osgood-Schlatter Disease is a repetitive-use injury that affects children going through a growth spurt. It classically causes pain over a bony bump that sits just below the kneecap. 11.01.2022 Scheuermann’s Disease is a childhood condition that primarily affects the mid-back section of the spine. Abnormal growth in the front part of the vertebrae here leads to a ‘wedge shaped’ appearance when seen on an x-ray. The wedging causes the spine to curve more severely (called a hyperkyphosis) in the mid-back and may lead to pain felt in this region. Good news! There are treatments available and we can help. Please call to make an appointment today.

07.01.2022 The debate on whether ice baths reduce the chances of sore muscles and improve recovery following an intense workout is ongoing. A 2017 study showed that low-intensity active recovery (i.e. 10 minutes on a stationary bike) following a workout has similar effects on the body. What is your preference? A little extra low-intensity workout? Or a dip in a chilly bathtub?

05.01.2022 Plantar fasciopathy is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a piece of thick tissue (similar to a tendon or ligament) that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. The inflammation is commonly caused by repetitive strain injury to that thick tissue. Things like excessive walking or running, or inappropriate shoes are common causes. Have you ever had pain in the arch of your foot? Give us a below (and then give us a call) we can help! #osteo #osteopathy #plantarfasciitis

05.01.2022 Organ check! Your oesophagus (aka food pipe) is the long tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. The walls of the oesophagus are made up of smooth muscle. This is different from the skeletal muscle that is responsible for moving the body, and is controlled automatically by the nervous system. A problem with the oesophagus may give you pain in the chest area. Heard of heartburn? This is an oesophagus problem, not the heart as the name suggests! Let us know if you experience chest pain after eating, as you might need to make a few changes to your diet. #osteo #osteopath #organ #foodpipe #oesophagus #chestpain

04.01.2022 Do you struggle to take those first few steps out of bed in the morning? 01.01.2022 Question Which is the largest organ in the human body? A lot of people think the answer is the brain, lungs or liver when asked this question. When in fact, the answer is the skin. It’s an incredibly intricate structure that forms the outer layers of our bodies. But why do we have skin?
