24.01.2022 FEEDING THERAPY. The aim of feeding therapy is systematic desensitisation to food. Eating new foods is the ultimate aim, but that is way down the track.... Getting a child in the same room as a new food is the first goal. Then there is a gradual process to get them to touch and interact with a new food. Today’s session ended with the little boy taking each bean, each blueberry, each apple slice and pushing it through the netting to the chickens. He touched each piece of food and loved it! 24.01.2022 GLUTEN FREE DOES NOT MEAN HEALTHY I have been totally gluten free for many years, and I take many of my client off gluten, at least for a trial. But it is really important to realise that a food which is labelled gluten free is not necessarily healthy! ... In fact, if it comes in a packet, it isn’t really that healthy at all. Take this cake as another example. It is totally gluten free, made from hazelnuts and almonds. But it has lots of sugar! This is fine for special occasions (it’s my husbands birthday), but it wouldn’t be wise to eat this every week! 23.01.2022 MIGRAINES AND HORMONES I’ve had hormonal migraines since I was a teenager. It has taken a lot of trial and error, and investigation to get them under control. As with most conditions, I do not think there is one magic bullet. There isn’t one supplement or one diet change that fixes everything.... Things that have really helped my migraines include: Avoiding refined sugar Eating a mostly paleo diet Doing quite a lot of exercise Massage Making sure I am detoxifying my hormones well. Homeopathy Things that will work really well for a lot of people, but didn’t really work for me: Gluten free diet Magnesium Feverfew (the herb) Avoiding amines in food One tool in my tool box is broccoli sprout powder. This contains a compound called indole-3-carbinole which helps with oestrogen detoxification. I would say that the claim on the side of the container that says it is delicious and fun if absolutely no true. It is neither delicious nor fun, but works really well . Traditionally this would be made from basil, but tonight it was made from lemon balm.... Lemon balm is from the mint family, but, as the name suggests, tastes lemony. As a herb, is has lots of medicinal properties, such as for anxiety, stress and insomnia. 16.01.2022 HIDING SUPPLEMENTS I frequently get asked by parents how to get their kids to take supplements. Some kids will take herbs and vitamins really easy, especially if they get used to it when they are very young.... Other kids take a lot more persuasion. I find home made ice blocks a really useful vehicle for supplements. Ice moulds are easy to find in IKEA or Kmart. Just put a daily dose of the supplement in a mould, and top up with a good quality juice. 16.01.2022 ECZEMA I am seeing a huge increase in the number of children in clinic with eczema. A combination of extremely cold, dry weather, and a dramatic increase in hand washing and hand sanitising may be partially responsible.... The conventional treatment for eczema involves steroid creams. There are some issues with that...... If you put steroid creams on a little person, you can be covering a very large % of their skin with steroids. This increases the likelihood of it being absorbed. Kids put their hands in their mouths. A lot. So if you have steroid cream all over them, there is a high change some of that is getting ingested. Steroid creams will increase the chance of skin getting infected with things like S. aureus. That is because they inhibit the immune system of the skin. If you need to use steroid creams on your child to manage a flare, work on getting to the root cause also. There is something going on internally for your child, that will not be fixed with a steroid cream. Don’t read this and stop using steroid creams immediately. Another major problem with steroids is that when you stop using them, there is a rebound affect. Your skin will be worse than ever if you stop steroids abruptly after a course of treatment. Instead, make an appointment with me, and work out what the root cause is. 14.01.2022 FOOD EXPLORATION Even if you choose purées as your weaning method for your child (not baby lead weaning), it is important to give your child a ‘hard munchable’ food also, ever meal or snack time. The point of this is not for your child to eat it the hard food. The point is to allow your child to practice having a hard solid food in their mouth. ... The chosen food needs to be small enough to fit in their mouth, but too big for them to take a bite. Having one hand on the food, whilst the other end is in the mouth allows the child to learn how to move food around in their mouth. This will desensitise your child’s tongue. The risk of choking is very low as long as the food is too big for the child to take a bite. A big fat raw carrot will not be able to be bitten through by a child who is eating purées as their main food. 14.01.2022 ORGANIC FOOD Feeling super organised to have an organic beef casserole in the slow cooker by 9am on a 28 degree day . The perils of meal planning without checking the rather forecast. One change that I recommend most of my patients make is to choose organic food as much as they can.... Of course it is more expensive, but there are a few ways to offset that: Grow your own! Green leafy veggies and herbs are so easy to grow you own. As long as you do a bit of research and avoid chemicals, your garden will be organic Buy a box of seasonal organic fruit and veg from a coop or spray free / organic farm. This works out much cheaper than buying from the supermarket. Buy organic meat direct from farmer. I get 20kg organic beef dropped straight into my freezer once a month But why? Organic food tastes better. You will never go back to a conventional apple once you’ve tasted organic. Non organic fruit and veg are sprayed with glyphosate. This is like taking a low dose antibiotic permanently, and very bad for your gut health. Non organic livestock are fed a lot of antibiotics - which you then eat when you eat non organic meat. Ultimately this use of antibiotics is jeopardising the usefulness of antibiotics in humans. Pesticides cause oxidative stress in our body, affecting how well we (and our kids) can detoxify. This can lead to many issues with physical and mental health. 13.01.2022 FRITTER OR FALAFEL?? I’ve been having some serious falafel cravings this week! I got addicted to falafel after spending a summer in Israel when I was at Uni (the first time ). Maybe I overdosed on them, as my last child has a severe chickpea and less severe sesame allergy (the 2 main ingredients in falafel).... So I can’t make proper falafel, or order them when we are out to dinner as a family, as he would react if I gave him a hug or kiss after eating them. Instead, I am working on some chickpea / sesame free falafel. These ones are made with cannellini beans, zucchini and buckwheat. I definitely don’t have the consistency right yet, so I won’t share. 13.01.2022 FLAXSEEDS / LINSEEDS Flaxseeds have been consumed as a food for many thousands of years. Back home in Northern Ireland, flax used to be a major crop, but to make linen, rather than as a food source ... When you buy linseeds, you need to buy them whole, as they are much more stable like this. But to get maximum benefit, you should grind them before eating, or they will come out the way they went in (undigested). 12.01.2022 I am going to add group SOS feeding therapy in 2021. That will mean having about 4 children in a session, instead of just one. The advantage of this is that it will bring down the cost, compared to one on one therapy. Peer group support from other kids can be useful for some age groups.... To do this successfully, I need to match children by developmental stage, so the group is all at the same level. 12.01.2022 WHAT IS AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE! It's a disease that occurs when our natural immune system defence goes out of control and attacks your body instead of attacking bugs and bacteria. Widespread inflammation from certain diet, lifestyle and environmental factors can also trigger this immune reaction and ultimately lead to autoimmunity. There is loads of research now on how the gut microbiome influences autoimmune disease risk. A healthy gut regulates our immune sys...tem and helps prevent it from over reacting. Bad bacteria can cause widespread inflammation which triggers an immune response and can lead to autoimmune conditions. I have an over abundance of herbs in my garden (thanks to COVID), see needing to make sure I use as many as possible. ... Tonight’s dinner was salmon with dill. 09.01.2022 ACNE I had shocking acne when I was younger. From about age 13 to 25, when I took Roaccutane. Roaccutane is an awful, awful drug.... Everyone gets really dry skin with it - think Vaseline in your nostrils . Some people will get liver issues with it, such as high cholesterol. It leads to birth defects if you get pregnant on it, and there is little info available in the effect on future babies (I have my own theories on this) It can cause very serious mental health issues. I feel very strongly about helping teenagers avoid this drug. There are simple dietary changes than can help reduce acne. Avoid dairy Eat a low glycemic diet. There are also supplements that can help, including Zinc Probiotics specifically for acne. Acne can be a very serious issue, and people can feel like there are no other options except roaccutane. 06.01.2022 DETOX TIME It’s been a head-achey sort of week, which means it’s time a detox. Headaches can be due to an overburdened liver - toxins, hormones etc.... That’s is definitely the case for me.....even 2 glasses of wine will give me a 2 day migraine . To to give my liver a little boost, I do a detox, about once a year. The way I do that is to go back and do GAPS intro. (GAPS = gut and psychology syndrome, am intense but effective gut healing diet). Which means for the next few weeks, I’ll be eating lots of soup and meat . Pain is very motivating, so although the diet is hard, I find it to be worthwhile. In the past when I have done this, I have stayed totally headache free for about 6 months. So this is all my veggies, prepped and read to add to my chicken stock and beef stock tomorrow morning. The are basically gluten free pasta and bolognaise stuck together with a bit of cheese and cooked in a pie maker.... 03.01.2022 GRAZING Is this the face your kids do when you tell them they can’t have a snack? One of the major factors I see contributing to picky eating is too many snacks.... Grazing is not good for any one - kids or adults. I’m a firm believe that kids do need a snack between meals, so a typical day might look like this: 7am breakfast 9:30am morning tea 12pm lunch 2:30pm afternoon tea 5.30pm dinner There is definitely no shortage of food with this plan, but it isn’t grazing. Each meal or snack goes for 20-30 min leaving at least 2 hour food free time. If you kids don’t need the snacks, you can definitely skip them. It depends on your child’s activity level, growth stage and metabolism. Grazing is where kids go from snack to snack to snack all day, and skip proper meals. Why is this a problem? Grazing will reduce appetite for actual meals. Grazing is terrible for your teeth Grazing stops your migrating motor complex from kicking in, leading to gut issues Grazing keeps your insulin high all day, leading to metabolic issues. 02.01.2022 LENTIL SOUP Lunch today is lentil and veggie soup, made yesterday. At 6:30am I put a whole organic chicken in the slow cooker, filled to the top with filtered water. I put it on high for 4 hours. ... Then at about 10:30, I used a metal sieve to lift out the whole chicken, leaving the nutritious stock in the slow cooker. In a separate frying pan, I sautéed: 4 chopped onions 4 big cloves garlic 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon ground coriander Salt and pepper To the slow cooker I added the onion and spice mix, as well as: 250g red lentils (washed) Pumpkin Capsicum Carrot Cooked on high for about 3 hours, then blitzed with a hand held blender. Homegrown coriander on top to serve. 01.01.2022 THYROID Lots of people (especially ladies) get diagnosed with an under active thyroid. Quite often the approach is to wait and see what happens, do nothing to start off with.... In the vast majority of cases, your thyroid will become under active due to an autoimmune attack on it. This disease is called Hashimotos. By taking a ‘watch and wait’ approach, what is happening is that you are waiting for the attack on your thyroid to be so extensive that it can no longer make enough thyroid hormone, and your blood tests show a high TSH. Then, you get prescribed thyroxine to replace the thyroid hormone you can’t make anymore. This is not a sensible approach. Once the thyroid tissue has been destroyed, you can’t get it back. And if you don’t address the underlying causes for the autoimmune attack, your thyroid will continue to be destroyed, and your dose of thyroxine will go up and up. If you suspect your thyroid is playing up (symptoms include weight gain, hair loss, constipation, cold intolerance, fatigue), get in touch with me.
