25.01.2022 This week we will be focusing on a condition that is extremely prevalent amongst women today! Thyroid problems, specifically Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) and its associated condition Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. It is estimated that around 50,000 women between 31-40 in Australia suffer from some form of thyroid condition! This number is expected to be much higher due to the rate of misdiagnosed and undiagnosed cases! Atrophic (autoimmune) hypothyroidism is six times more... likely to occur in females than in men and the auto immune strain is often the most common. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disorders occur when your immune system produces antibodies that attack your own tissues, as is the case in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It is still unclear as to why the body produces antibodies against its own tissues but studies have shown that it could be due in large part to adrenal fatigue and emotional stressors. Some of the emotions associated with an under active thyroid include feeling stifled, giving up, humiliation, feelings of exhaustion, despair, despondency, not letting go and loneliness... Some cancer radiation therapies, medications and even diets are also know to effect thyroid function! So how do you know if you have an under active thyroid? Here are some common symptoms to look out for... Extreme fatigue / lethargy / general tiredness Weight gain Frequent crying Poor tolerance of the cold Muscle weakness and cramps The outer third of the eyebrow is thin or missing. Difficulty concentrating Depression Migraines Low libido Thin and brittle fingernails Loss of hair Do you identify with any of these symptoms? Stay tuned to find out how to get your thyroid problem diagnosed properly, common treatments and how they might not be very effective and how a whole body and mind integrated approach is often the most effective way to balance the thyroid! Please feel free to open a discussion below, talk about your personal experiences with having an under active thyroid or message me for a private confidential chat! Think you might be effected by an under active thyroid? Call Radiant Natural Health today!

24.01.2022 How is IBS diagnosed? Generally, because there are usually no physical signs to definitively diagnose irritable bowel syndrome and many of the symptoms coincide with more serious bowel and abdominal problems, diagnosis is often a process of elimination. The most important symptom your health care professional will look for is abdominal pain and discomfort lasting at least 12 weeks, though the weeks don't have to occur consecutively. Changes in frequency and consistency of t...he stool, mucus in your stool or bloating or abdominal distension are also key signs... A holistic practitioner will also take emotional factors into account including depression, brain fog and fatigue. Your doctor will likely assess how you fit these criteria by doing stomach palpitations, assessing family history and other environmental factors and possibly suggest a colonoscopy. More serious 'red flag' signs and symptoms that might prompt your doctor to do additional testing include: New onset after age 50 Weight loss Rectal bleeding Fever Nausea or recurrent vomiting Abdominal pain, especially if it's not completely relieved by a bowel movement Diarrhea that is persistent or awakens you from sleep. If you have these red flag signs or symptoms, you'll need additional testing to further assess your condition. However if you fit the IBS criteria and don't have any red flag signs or symptoms most often your health care professional will suggest a course of treatment that will be monitored over a period of time and then reassessed. So what happens if you are diagnosed with IBS? And what treatments actually work? Look out for tomorrows post for tips on managing IBS that are safe and effective!!

23.01.2022 While spending the weekend reconnecting with myself I was privileged to both lead and practice Yoga Nidra in this amazingly tranquil location. #MangroveYogaAshram is such a beautiful place to get back to nature and take a moment to reflect inward. We often spend so much of our time rushing around, worrying and giving to others that we forget to take a moment for ourselves! We often get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the city that we forget to stop and recharge! ... Taking a moment to stop, recharge and reflect inwards is so important if we want our body and minds to stay happy and healthy! Heading to an ashram is one way to reconnect, but you don't need to go to an ashram to do this! Take a walk barefoot through the grass, meditate, journal, sing out loud, dance. Do something that makes you feel good! It's as simple as that! Make time for you! Your body and mind will thank you! #ashramlife #yoga #yoganidra #recharging #health #wellness #timeout #meditation #selflove #holistichealthandwellnesssydney #holistichealthsydney #instabusiness

22.01.2022 Worry, stress and anxiety is a major cause of disease in our society! Sometime our body's become so used to being set in fight or flight that it becomes a stress response habit that's so normal you may not even notice anymore! It just becomes your normal state of being! This is very detrimental to your health and can be the cause of many physical symptoms such as headaches or migraines, joint pain, depression, or even digestive problems like IBS, things that you might be mask...ing with pharmaceutical drugs because they seem unrelated! You could rid yourself of these symptoms and build your stress resistance so you can improve your overall health by investing in yourself! Our culture today doesn't seem to recognize self-care as something valuable anymore, it sees doing something for yourself such as getting a therapeutic treatment or leaving work at 5 so you can eat dinner with your family or having a day or 2 off as self-indulgent! This is burning us out! We all need to take time for ourselves and feel good about it, not looked down on for recharging our batteries! Make the commitment to do something just for you today or spend more time with your family without thinking about work! Your body will thank you! Don't forget to book in to Radiant Natural Health to see if stress or anxiety is affecting your life!

21.01.2022 Today is day 2 of our discussion on the thyroid and I'll be looking into how to effectively diagnose hypothyroidism... Your thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, is your chief gland of energy and metabolism and is like a master lever that fires up the genes that keep cells doing their jobs. You can think of the thyroid as a fundamental mechanism in a complex machine, as every cell in your body has thyroid hormone receptors. Hypothyroidism, as discussed yesterday ...is a low functioning thyroid and is commonly thought of as a silent epidemic, according to many functional medicine doctors and holistic practitioners. People can suffer for years with symptoms that our conventional medical system frequently don't know how to treat because complaints seem scattered or vague and often there is no pill or quick fix! Whats worse, in most cases, hypothyroidism isnt rooted in a thyroid problem in the first place. Its rooted in an immune system gone awry, but most doctors dont test for the antibodies that show the presence of autoimmunity. According to Dr. Datis Kharrazian, 90% of people with hypothyroidism have Hashimotos, an autoimmune hypothyroid condition, whereby the immune system attacks thyroid tissue. Therefore, to cure thyroid disease, or any autoimmune condition, you have to get to the source of the imbalance; focusing on suppression of symptoms with medication is simply barking up the wrong tree. Did you know that there is an estimated 13 million un-diagnosed cases of hypothyroidism in the U.S. With Australia following this pattern at an alarming rate! Stay turned for information on how to diagnose thyroid conditions!

21.01.2022 Fight/Flight... or Freeze? The freeze response is the lesser known response to imminent danger and involves a dissociation from reality as a way to numb pain physically, mentally and emotionally at the time of the original event. Commonly seen in children, many studies now show the debilitating effects this response can have years later in adults who have experienced trauma as a child. "That is, such paralyzing psychological phenomena as phobias, panic attacks, obsessive...-compulsive behaviors, and various anxiety states can frequently be understood as symptoms of a freeze response that never had the chance to let go or thaw out once the original experience was over. And many features of post-traumatic stress disorder directly relate to this kind of unrectified trauma." The memories literally get trapped inside the body and are subconsciously triggered when a similar event or emotional response occurs. Often with out any understanding of why you are reacting in such a way. Something that as a child was life-preserving is now having the opposite effect and has become detrimental to our well being! So what can we do about it!? Working on uncovering and deconstructing the trauma is the key here but along with this we need to help move the trauma that's trapped in the physical body and release any residual tension! Kinesiology can help with this as we can work on the physical, mental and emotional elements together and see how they are effecting the body as a whole. If you have unresolved trauma, or you suffer from an emotionally paralyzing condition such as phobias, panic attacks, OCD, anxiety or PTSD give us a call on 0466 845 645 to discuss your treatment options today!

20.01.2022 Welcome back to another glorious week! I hope everyone's weekend was fabulous... Today we are continuing our discussion on Hyperthyroidism and will be looking specifically at Graves' Disease... Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease which is similar to hypothyroidism in that a persons immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This causes it to produce too much thyroxine. Thyroxine (T4) is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland which helps regulate growth and control metab...olism in the body. When thyroxine levels are high the patient's metabolic rate increases and this can lead to effects on physical appearance as well as moods. Symptoms to look out for include: Anxiety Moodiness and irritability Insomnia Tiredness Arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) Tachycardia (accelerated heart beat) Tremor in the hands and fingers Sensitivity to heat Weight loss, even though the patient eats properly Brittle hair Goiter (thyroid gland is enlarged) Menstrual cycle changes Bowel movements are more frequent Bulging eyes, nown as Graves' ophthalmopathy (Exophthalmos). It is where the tissues and muscles behind the eyes become inflamed, or in other words they swell. Graves' ophthalmopathy is much more common among smokers with Graves' disease compared to non-smokers with Graves' disease. Common treatments in western medicine include inhibiting production of thyroid hormones to lessen the severity of symptoms, this is done through medication. Anti-thyroid drugs work by interfering with the gland's ability to use iodine. Side effects of the medications include skin rashes and joint pain. Patients on these drugs who experience fever or flu-like symptoms should see their doctor immediately, as the drugs can suppress the immune system and cause other serious problems. Radioiodine therapy is also another common treatment. Radioactive iodine is taken as a drink and the iodine is taken up by the active cells in the thyroid, which are then killed. Patients should avoid contact with adults for a few days and with children and pregnant women for a longer period. Surgery is also an option, where some or all of the thyroid gland is surgically removed under general anaesthesia. There are normal surgical risks associated with this procedure, as well as the possibility of damaging the parathyroid glands (which lie next to the thyroid gland) and the nerve supplying the vocal cords. As you can see there are associated risks with these treatments, however if symptoms are quite serious then they should definitely be considered. But as mentioned in earlier posts if these treatments can be avoided in the first place repairing thyroid function naturally would certainly be better off! Keep your eye out for how to get control of hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease holistically using a whole body and mind integrated approach... And don't forget to make an appointment if you associate with any of these symptoms!

14.01.2022 Today we will be looking at mainstream and alternative treatments for hypothyroidism and their effectiveness... If you have been diagnosed with an under active thyroid your GP will typical advise you to begin taking artificial hormones, specifically, flooding the body with artificial thyroxin. The most commonly used medicine is levothyroxine (le-voh-thy-ROK-suhn). This is a man-made form of T4. When you take T4, your body is supposed to makes the T3 it needs from the T4 in t...he pills. A man-made form of T3, called liothyronine (ly-oh-THY-roh-neen), is also available. This very common treatment can, and usually does suppress the natural ability of the thyroid to produce thyroxin, which means that even more artificial thyroxin is needed with ever decreasing results. This pattern usually results in most patients needing to be on thyroid hormone treatment for the rest of their lives! As a holistic practitioner I am able to recognize the benefits of this treatment for patients with server symptoms, however it is often used as a quick fix, a bandaid, that isn't addressing the core issues. So although hormone treatments can be an effective quick fix for people with server symptoms in the short term, often those on hormone treatments for an extended period find that the medication only works sporadically, still with many 'down' days or even weeks and generally have a constant need to up their dosage! That is why I recommend that medication be just one facet of treatment, and if the symptoms are not impeding daily life they should be used only as a last resort if alternative therapies alone are unable to control the condition... A natural holistic approach is concerned with restoring normal body functions and finding the root causes to the imbalance in the first place and so often has no side effects. Stay tuned for more on how a holistic mind/body approach is used to treat hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's...

14.01.2022 A holistic approach to treating thyroid problems looks at the body as a whole... Often when your body manifests with a physical sickness it is trying to tell you something! It's like the bodies alarm system yelling out for help... Most of the time all we do is mask it, take a pill, or ignore the symptoms, pushing our problems deeper and deeper, forcing them to manifest in different and often more dramatic ways... What's important is finding the root of the problem. Often it... stems from emotional stress or beliefs that are in the subconscious. Counseling for beliefs is often the first port of call, along with finding emotional patterns and stressors that might be effecting the body. By working through these patterns the body shifts and starts to become consciously aware and begins its transition to becoming balanced. Making dietary changes is also extremely important for treating hypothyroidism. Many people with hypothyroidism experience crippling fatigue and brain fog, which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar, carbohydrates and caffeine. These foods can burn out your thyroid and destabilize blood sugar. Kinesiology tries to determine the cause of the problem by addressing the root, rather than the symptoms. This approach can generally restore health relatively quickly. The following are just a few of the techniques that I use to help balance the thyroid: - Treat the associated emotion or belief with emotional release techniques - Give essences where appropriate. - Balance meridians and or chakras - Give dietary advice such as changing the diet to avoid certain foods, eating more protein and less carbohydrates. - and Constructing a positive health plan. If you feel like you are affected by an under active thyroid give me a call and book an appointment today! Tomorrow we'll be discussing an over active thyroid, hyperthyroidism, so make sure you stay tuned!

13.01.2022 Ahhh the Psoas! What a wonderfully important muscle... "Because the psoas is so intimately involved in such basic physical and emotional reactions, a chronically tightened psoas continually signals your body that youre in danger, eventually exhausting the adrenal glands and depleting the immune system." This meas STRESS STRESS and more STRESS!! So if you're feeling stressed checking the psoas for tightness may help you alleviate some tension! ... Massage is great for this! A Kinesiology session can also be very effective as we can work both structurally and emotionally. Working to uncover the cause of the stress as well as physically releasing any tension in the psoas can help ensure a more stress free life! Give us a call on 0466 845 645 to book an appointment and find out how we can help you manage your stress :)

11.01.2022 Open your heart and listen to its song... It's sings your truth! You just have to let yourself tune in :) Your Heart Chakra: Problem or Symptoms when your Heart Chakra is out of Balance... ... When energy is not flowing freely from this chakra there is a disruption of love, balance, harmony, peace, hope, growth and healing. When the chakra is blocked there is an inability to express any deep emotions including joy, fear, sadness and serenity. Diseases associated with this chakra imbalance include tuberculosis, arrhythmias, hypertension, coronary heart disease, asthma, high cholesterol, breast (cancer and fibromas), shoulder and esophagus problems, selfishness, and envy. Excessive yang leads to insensitivity. Excessive yin leads to hypersensitivity or the feeling of emptiness. This is the master control center for regulating the emotions. When your Heart Chakra is in Balance... This chakra is fed and balanced by finding your passion and following your heart. Have faith, find ways to express yourself and practice appreciation, balancing giving and receiving, and forgiveness of yourself. Sadly, we have ALL experienced the pain of being hurt or broken. Gandhi once said The person who has experienced great pain and sorrow, is able to have more compassion for those who are suffering. A closed or unbalanced heart chakra is caused by or relates to too much self-absorption, self-focus, and self-pity. Get beyond yourself! Get involved with others. Volunteer, or join a social group. At this chakra level you need to become aware of the vibrations, magnetism, or resonance that you feel when you are around others. Spirit will begin to provide you with synchronicities" that will attract or direct you to people or events that are beneficial for your evolution as a soul. Help balance your Heart Chakra, book an appointment with Radiant Natural Health Today!

10.01.2022 Lets start looking at Hyperthyroidism today! An overactive thyroid is known as hyperthyroidism and tends to mostly affect women. Around two in every 100 women will experience some degree of hyperthyroidism in their lifetime. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease, which is an auto immune system abnormality. It is also caused from local inflammation (thyroiditis), nodules or lumps. There is no cure for hyperthyroidism as yet, but it is usually managed wi...th treatments such as anti-thyroid medication. Common symptoms of an over active thyroid include: - Accelerated heart rate or palpitations - Muscle weakness and trembling - Unexplained weight loss - Sensitivity to heat - Diarrhoea - Sleeping difficulties - Sweating - Irritability - Nervousness, agitation and anxiety - Changes in menstruation, including scantier flow and increased cycle length. It is thought that around 15-20% of the population experience IBS at some point in there lives... Many people even live for years with server symptoms! Stay tuned to hear more about what causes IBS, common symptoms and both main stream and alternate treatments!

05.01.2022 Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Did you know that around one in five Australians experiences irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) at some time in their life. IBS includes abdominal pain, bloating, gas, mucus in the stools, and alternating diarrhoea and constipation. It seems that people with IBS have sensitive bowels that often get triggered by a number of factors. It is more prevalent in women than men and symptoms tend to first occur in early adulthood. The causes of IBS are gen...erally unknown, but environmental factors such as changes of routine, emotional stress, infection and diet can trigger an attack. The most common symptoms include: Abdominal pain or cramping that is often relieved by passing wind or faeces Alternating diarrhoea and constipation A sensation that the bowels are not fully emptied after passing a motion Abdominal bloating Mucus present in the stools and Nausea. Irritable bowel syndrome doesnt cause lasting damage and doesnt contribute to the development of serious bowel conditions, such as cancer or colitis but it does cause pain and discomfort that is often debilitating or interferes in daily life. So how is IBS diagnosed? What are some common mainstream treatments? And how can a holistic mind/body approach help rid you of IBS? Stay tuned for more info shortly! If you are suffering from IBS call Radiant Natural Health for a health assessment today!

05.01.2022 So how do you help regulate hyperthyroidism and Graves' without resorting to quick fix, bandaid treatments? Illness is often a reminder to us that we are not living our intended destiny. The root of illness can manifest in our minds, thoughts, limiting beliefs, thought forms, poor brain body communication and poor brain function. Think of the body as an alarm system, in that when you get physically sick your body is trying to give you a message, to warn you that something i...Continue reading

04.01.2022 "Can we live the life we want? Can we be authentic in our speech? Can we identify and release our underlying limiting beliefs so that we begin a new commitment towards genuine compassion, abundance, love and connection?" The connection to our heart is an important one, and key to our energetic and emotional state. However, becoming 'disconnected' from our heart is unfortunately all too common in our busy, stressful world. This can often lead to many health concerns. There is good news though!! It is possible to find your way back and reconnect to your heart and regain optimal health. I can help :) If you would like to find out how give me a call and we can discuss your treatment options.

04.01.2022 If you are having problems with your thyroid looking at your diet is key to getting it back to its optimal health! Check out this article on links between salt intake and auto immune diseases! Do you really know how much salt is in your diet?

04.01.2022 Treating IBS holistically is thought to be one if the best ways to treat the condition! Most of the treatment options conventional GP's offer just band aid the problem, such as taking a diarrhetic or Imodium for irregular bowel movements... Looking at stress patterns and digestion along with diet helps give a big picture of whats going on in the body... The article attached below discusses how the Ileocecal Valve and Huston Valve effects digestion and can have a huge effect ...on patients with IBS... The ileocecal valve in particular correlates with stress and a person who is constantly on alert, stuck in fight or flight mode will often have digestive issues. This leads to the valve 'malfunctioning' and activating the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system leading to it either staying open or closed! By looking into what is causing stress, be it emotional, diet or structural, the digestive distress can often be eliminated! If you are suffering from IBS give me a call and book an appointment today!

02.01.2022 So you think you have an under active thyroid... The first port of call if you suspect you might have an under active thyroid is to find a doctor or holistic practitioner right away but make sure you choose carefully! Most doctors don't run the appropriate tests that are needed to effectively diagnose most thyroid problems! Firstly find out which labs they will run. If they are only going to check your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels, move on. TSH levels alone... are often insufficient for diagnosing hypothyroidism, yet many doctors will not go beyond this one test. Make sure they are checking levels such as free T-4 and free T-3, thyroid antibodies, and possibly reverse T-3. You might not know what these things mean, but they do or at least they should. Finally, find a doctor or better still a holistic practitioner that will listen to you: ask you how you feel, how your diet is, how youre sleeping and how your energy levels are. Someone who will try to find the root of your thyroid problems not just give you a bandaid to suppress your symptoms! As a holistic practitioner I often suggest that clients who display symptoms of a thyroid imbalance seek the appropriate medical tests to confirm the severity of their condition. However through muscle testing (bio-feedback) and extensive discussion and counseling I am able to determine whether or not the thyroid is in its optimal working condition. By testing for hormone imbalance, emotional stressors and motivators as well as looking at life style and diet, I am able to effectively test, not diagnose, for these imbalances and take effective action to assist in rebalancing! Coming up: So you've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism... What next? Tips on what treatments work, common misconceptions surrounding conventional treatments, the role of your diet and how kinesiology can assist you!
