25.01.2022 A few snaps from group class this morning Well done everyone! I love catching up with you all to proof group work together. You all did great And how pretty are these doggos? ... #groupclass #iheartgroupclass #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

25.01.2022 Wally in a nutshell Wally came to me for a program covering his leash work, recall around distractions, lack of impulse control and tendency to overreact if another dog snapped at him. He is a very pushy dude and reeeeeally tests his owners boundaries wherever he can. So far he is looking so good! His leash work is lovely and recalls are on point, even when he is running over to a new dog he hasn't met. His impulse control (after a lot of work) is not too bad either, b...ut a little more refining to do. Even his interactions with dogs have been great (he's just a bit of a goofball), because the incidents are few and far between it just takes a little longer to proof. But so proud of him and his owner so far

23.01.2022 Hi my name is Ace and I walked 3 houses down the street today! . . Most dogs love walks. In fact usually we have the problem that they love them so much that the owner can't control them. I did an evaluation with this big guy today and I couldn't quite believe how scared he was to go past the end of his property. .... . He put up a biiiiig fight. But he didn't know he'd just met the most persistent and patient (when it comes to training dogs lol) person in. The. World I would have waited there half an hour if I needed to. . . Eventually, he conquered it, and as soon as he did, he realised it wasn't as bad as his mind was making it out to be and was interested in what was around! This is the first time he has walked past the end of his property in months. . . I don't usually take pictures at evals but I thought this one deserved a snap - this is Ace's "I'm not totally sure about this but I DID IT and nothing bad happened!" face. The bravest boy. . . #ace #evaluation #holistichounds #perthdogtraining #scaredyace #hedidit #sobrave. See more

23.01.2022 Hey Winnie . . This sweet girl is about halfway through a recalls program and is looking pretty damn good! Little bit more refining and proofing to do but so happy with her progress so far. .... . Her owners wanted recall above all else from the get go so we started her wearing the e-collar for conditioning from 5 months old. . . She's now only just gone 6 months and almost there with a solid recall - an amazing way to set your pup up for success from the beginning! . . 23.01.2022 THIS. IS. AMAZING! Flynn has been doing a Behaviour Adjustment & Off Leash Reliability Program with me to target his fear and subsequent aggressive behaviour with other dogs. Yes, THIS dog. At the beginning of his program he was so nervous of Bun, even eye contact or a slight movement towards him would set him off into an explosion. He was attacked when younger by off leash dogs which likely triggered this or at least contributed.... These are pics his owner sent to me this week, after Flynn was doing SO well through the fence and showing a desire to interact, she headed inside a quiet dog park with some well behaved dogs and this was the outcome I'm so happy that he has turned into a much more relaxed dog, a more confident dog and is learning that other dogs aren't scary, and that his mumma will protect him if need be. Well done to Marion & Flynn I'm so proud of you so far. Flynn has made incredible progress. This is why I do what I do. #flynn #gsd #fear #reactivity #fearaggression #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

22.01.2022 Have you EVER seen a more awkward boy? . . Massive ups to Jess at Chaotic Smiles Photography for coming out at the break of dawn to take pictures of our idiots. I don't think she could have captured Bun's personality better :P Highly recommend her services if you want professional photos of your doggos! .... . 22.01.2022 Welcome Gus & Meg Just WAIT till you see their "before" video yikes. Meg and Gus have a range of issues... Never have I told a client at an eval to "please hire me" before but with these guys I did. Their owners needed HELP. ... Both dogs pull on the lead.. hard, Meg in particular is very pushy and doesn't mind choking herself out on the collar (this is not healthy). Both are reactive to other dogs on walks and Gus is also reactive to anything with wheels. Neither have recall - if they get out of the house it will take their owner close to an hour to get them back, sometimes running all over the neighbourhood after them. Both dogs have zero manners and structure in the household... This results in Meg having a pretty high level of anxiety, she destroys things, both dogs resource guard food/toys, Meg barks obsessively at the neighbours in their yards resulting in complaints. When guests arrive - both dogs lose their tiny minds at the front door, they have to be locked in behind a baby gate and then react heavily to the guest, Meg in particular will literally scream (yes, scream). They redirect this over-arousal onto each other by biting at each other. Meg is a horrendous jumper and if you're not careful she will headbutt you! Their owners literally cannot even weed their front lawn because Meg will scream the entire time until someone goes back inside to her. She also has ZERO manners when interacting with other dogs, is very boisterous and rude. Meg has also bitten her male owner on the face after being startled resulting in stitches/plastic surgery Geeeeez. Have I forgotten anything? They are just over a week in and have already made some pretty amazing progress. Watch this space

21.01.2022 What Progress looks like... I know most of the time I (and other trainers) share videos of what the dog looks like after the work is done and the dog is making good choices. But the progress videos ain't so polished sometimes ... Dopamine junkie Ragnar is working through his issues in the video below. Ragnar scans his environment and searches for anything he can possibly fixate on and react to, and his reactions are explosive and loud. Dogs by far cause the worst (and most vocal) reactions though. I snapped a couple videos today of his owner Vicky working him through this at a busy dog walking spot today, Vicky is a great handler and it was awesome to watch her put the training into practise And please just heckin note: Ragnar's screams are pretty crazy (not if you own a staffy though), but he used to have people staring at him because of those screams way before training began, it's nothing to do with how we interrupt him, he just has a lot to yell about, always has and will always probably have something to say #ragnar #dopaminejunkie #staffyscream #holistichounds #perthdogtraining #amstaff

18.01.2022 little Milo makes some amazing choices with Bane this week! And look at my good boy. He loves little dogs/animals and is super sweet with them. Milo's owners have done a LOT of work to target his fear (and subsequent barking and reactivity) towards new people, dogs, sounds, objects... Basically everything. He has actually come so far just by counter conditioning these things that cause him stress with his daily food portion, but we want to get Milo the best results ...possible and the most freedom we can give him so we have added e-collar communication into this process. The change was crazy, even on session 1 where we were only conditioning the tool with Bane in the background, so looking good for refining this up for Milo & his fam. We are going as fast as we can but as slow as Milo needs to #milo #toypoodle #cutie #helperbane #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

16.01.2022 Welcome Bandit! Doesn't this guy look like a brindley version of The Bun?? They have SUCH similar personalities too that I had to ask how old he was but he is only 5 so is younger than my boy. . Bandit already has some great foundations set by a trainer friend of mine, but it's time to proof in the real world and refine things up when it comes to reactivity. ... . Bandit is LOUD . Upon seeing a dog you'll hear him a mile away. I'll upload video of him soon but for a quick update on a before & after check out our stories today #bandit #thebun #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

15.01.2022 How beautiful is Bella She is nearing the end of a basic program to target her leash reactivity to dogs, cars and sometimes people (and is looking amazing!) As well as impulse control, and a little bit of recall foundations. She is a gal who was very nervy and still can be at times, but she has grown SO MUCH in confidence since beginning the program and is looking like a different dog. ... So proud of Bells and her owner! #perthdogtraining #holistichounds #bella

13.01.2022 , - ? ? Short answer: they get better results!... Long answer:... I've talked before about why I work in the 'real world' vs a facility with my clients (real world results!), but I haven't talked about the way I run programs and why I do. I started out just offering one-off sessions, and that was fine for a while, I learned a lot training that way. But, after switching to programs under the guidance of one of my mentors, Ted Efthymiadis (Mango Dogs) I've seen a massive change in positive results, vs one-off sessions. , : A free evaluation to answer any and all questions before training begins I come to you, I work where YOU want to work A block of sessions, based upon a goal (results based) Training tools are included in your program and you keep them from Session 1, we can even switch tools if we find that something else will work better halfway through! Written doc's for you to refer to whenever you need Entry to monthly group classes to maintain training & work in a structured & safe environment with others Access to my helper dogs during sessions Ongoing support with me whenever you need, both during the program AND after :O Entry into my client group where I share extra tips, and organise group sessions to help anyone who needs it An open-minded trainer: I have a bunch of techniques I use on the regular, but I will literally try anything to get results - I even have a group of trainers for support who I bounce ideas off, so essentially you're getting the brains of many! Dog training is a process and if you really want things to change, you have to make decent changes in your lifestyle and be supported through troubleshooting along the way, 1 session is not going to fix serious issues for you. Also, I can be lazy as hell when I'm not kept accountable and I'm sure you can too :P So pre-booked sessions help you to stay on track with a training plan, with homework in between sessions. The biggest thing that this together provides... is support. Support through the program and support all the way to your goal. The only way I'll give up, is if you do. But if you're dedicated, so am I. If the dog takes longer to get there and I can see you're doing all the work, I'll often chuck in free sessions. I need to pay my overheads and my bills, yes, but that's not why I do what I do, I WANT to help dogs & their owners kick goals and it's something I'd do even if I won the lottery and didn't have to work. I only wish I had this via a trainer back in the day when I struggled with Buns... <3 #resultsbased #programs #dogtraining #holistichounds #perth #behaviourmodification #ilovemyjob

11.01.2022 Dexi Update! Remember this little guy? Well he is still mostly little (but he has grown a bit and is now 8 months!). We found him a home, and because his new owners are still stuck in an apartment till the end of the year we share Dexi doo. Because of this I have been focusing on other things like house manners, recall and reactivity when Dex is with me as those are higher priorities than the resource guarding with other dogs (he will be the only dog in the household). Bu...t today I decided just to brush him up on manners around other dogs (Bun) - this is him sharing and learning not to steal the food Bun finds from under his nose, and also to move away when Bun approaches his area. You can see how serious he is about his food from his stance. But he is sharing and making great choices! Nice work little man He also has an awesome "out" and incredible manners around food now, especially with humans. #dexi #resourceguarding #foodaggression #goodboi

09.01.2022 Bane searches the trees at the park to find me and his toy

09.01.2022 Learn the language A lot of this post was influenced by my friend Nelson Hodges. Dogs are funny things. They are predators that hunt and kill other animals, an...d also live in social groups. How do they do this without settling every dispute situation with their teeth? Without some set of controls in place it would be easy to imagine a scenario with a pile of vanquished and one victor. That doesn't help dogs live together, hunt together, keep each other safe, or raise families. Dogs (all canines actually) come hard wired with a complete communication system. It's universal and a dog in Mumbai could understand a dog from Fort Worth perfectly well. We can slog along trying to make dogs understand what we as humans (primates) mean but the amount of info will be limited and some dogs will be better at that than others. A far better idea is for the more adaptable species (us) to learn the basic fundamentals of dog communication systems. No dog is more misunderstood and frustrated than one being treated as a person in a fur coat, the coding is all wrong in the dog brain for that system. Until you understand that system you will be threatening a dog you don't mean to threaten, rewarding behaviors you don't mean to reward, and just generally be seen as obtuse and unpredictable by your dog. Start on the path to learning your dog's language and priorities and solid communication will follow. See more

09.01.2022 Cute little catch up with Cobber & Olivia at Champion Lakes today Did you know when you book a program with me you get lifetime support? Cobber finished his program earlier this year. He aced it; his manners inside are amazing with his bubba human brother, and his recalls are killer. ... But he had started pushing his leash work again. So we fixed that up today. The thing is, Cobber is smart, and pushy ;) Olivia just needed a refresher on how to overcome the pulling at the end of the leash and a reminder to be a consistent leader. Lucky he is smart cause he picked it back up pretty damn quick. Well done guys! #cobber #leashmanners #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

07.01.2022 It's a pass for Dustin! And an amazing one at that. Dustin just completed an Off Leash Reliability Program, I normally test my clients skills at the end of the program at the beach, and it was Dustin's day today! He recalled on a dime even with other people and dogs present. ... Check out our stories to see video! Amazing job Dustin and Tegan, so proud!! 07.01.2022 This pic sums up how Bun felt about helping me on jobs in the rain yesterday Incase you can't tell Bundy hates rain haha. 06.01.2022 Guys, don’t let a gap in skills and knowledge derail the life you COULD have with your dog. I’d give anything to know now what I didn’t know when I got Oakley a...nd Junior 20 years ago. The fun we would have had, the freedom we would have enjoyed...the stress I would have avoided... Plenty of help out there. Go get it. You’ll thank me later.

06.01.2022 Welcome Trigga & Remi Cuties! These guys are doing an off leash reliability program with me as well as attacking some behavioural issues. Remi unfortunately is highly likely to make dumb, aggressive choices with dogs she doesn't know, stemming from fear (she attempted a nip at the back end of Bun during a recent session - I told her that's not gonna fly girl!) This sort of response is very common of a nervous dog though - to bite at the back end or behind someone to ch...oose the least confronting option possible. She is also just nervous in general of many new things and shows fearful behaviour around new people in the household. So lots of work to be done with her and she will be the tougher of the 2 dogs to work with. Trigga is just a boisterous big idiot he's such a lovely boy but doesn't know his own size and is SUPER confident. He jumps all over people, and is much too boisterous with other dogs too. Neither of the dogs could be trusted off leash either so we are tackling everything! So far their leash work, focus and recalls are looking great. They have now started impulse control (something neither of them have) and muzzle training for Remi to keep everything safe. Proud of them so far!! #triggaremi #amstaffs #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

03.01.2022 Happy Public Holiday Monday! Love, Milla & Bun . .... Milla is about halfway through her off leash reliability and behaviour adjustment program and is doing SO WELL! Her down-stays look amazing, recall is pretty damn good and she was so polite interacting with The Bun. Lots more to do but she is looking good so far #milla #goodgirl #holistichounds #perthdogtraining

01.01.2022 SO PROUD Remember Atlas? We are nearing the end of his program and yesterday he made some INCREDIBLE choices. ... Atlas used to be reactive on sight of a dog and of some people. He would lunge at dogs he didn't know if he got too close, particularly if they were high energy. He also would launch at dogs he didn't know in attack mode of they approached him. He can show aggressive tendencies if approached or touched by a human he doesn't know (none of these aggressive behaviours have intent behind them, he is just scared). Well you wouldn't guess it from yesterday's session He met dogs through the fence, showed genuine interest and desire to interact with dogs, took food happily from me without the need for his muzzle (he thinks all new people may have a bait bucket and so waits patiently for food which means Aasha has done an incredible job of counter conditioning and changing his emotional response to people) and just generally looks like a happier, more relaxed dog. They are even now considering continuing with obedience classes to fulfill him even further - he's a lucky boy!! Aasha and Atlas have kicked ass. Little bit more to go but wow has he made amazing progress. #holistichounds #perthdogtraining
