After I went travelling & picked up a bug and was sick or after a bout of gastro, my guts were never the same ... who else’s gut symptoms started after some kind of infection?? Just to clarify we are an appointment only clinic (including Bowen therapy and clinical nutrition services), whilst we endeavour to fit patients in we generally are quite booked up and in the event of a new patient enquiring on the day often either Jeremy or Luke will stay later or start earlier if need be. Please don’t get disgruntled if you can not be seen then and there as we ...take pride in taking our time with patients making sure to do a full thorough work up, examination & treatment, so trying to squeeze in between seeing patients in our professional judgement is not giving a 100% service to the patient, we do not do rush jobs! 15.01.2022 Effect of having Christmas dinner with the in-laws on the gut microbiota I can’t say I ever thought a group of researchers would look into this, but anyway they have and here is what they found... They observed two distinct microbial-biomarker signatures that discriminated the participants that visited their own family vs their in-laws over the Xmas period. Those that visited their in-laws there was a significant decrease in all Ruminococcus species which are known to be a...ssociated with physiological stress & depression. Turns out Christmas & feces have quiet the tradition.. the image here is taken from a nativity scene in Catalonia (Spain), a porcelain man casually defecating in the presence of Mary, Joseph & their newly born son & is said to symbolise fertilisation if the holy ground & hoping for a prosperous harvest in the new year. 07.01.2022 How’s this for an interesting new research study Microbiome of root vegetablesa source of gluten-degrading bacteria Researchers looked at bacteria that inhabit potato, carrot, beetroot & Jerusalem artichoke evaluating their capabilities to degrade gluten. To me this certainly sparked my attention and curiosity ... So what was the key point they identified? Bacteria from root vegetables can degrade gluten. According to the researchers Therefore, we hypothesize that in...creasing the amount of raw vegetables in the diet might increase the diversity of bacteria in human GIT and thereby alleviate the symptoms of gluten related diseases. So if I read this correctly... eat more raw vegetables (keep In mind the researchers only studied the above mentioned) and you may alleviate symptoms associated with gluten ingestion. Plants naturally produce poisons & toxins to protect themselves in nature such as phytohaemagglutinin, cyanogenic glycoside & glycoalkaloids. Cooking and correct food preparation techniques are one way of neutralising and degrading some of these toxic plant defence chemicals making them safer for human consumption. "A combination of the supplement S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) HEAL9 may rapidly alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, new research suggests." Interestingly this probiotic is one I've been using for patients with medically diagnosed IBS and visceral hypersensitivity with good results and well tolerated with SIBO (unlike a lot of other probiotics) https://wb.md/3522EP4

04.01.2022 Ever wondered if your spinal discs have their own unique microbiome and that the balance of these microorganisms would potentially be a determining factor in disc degeneration and disease? I know I certainly wasn't taught this at University. Latest research is now showing more associations with not only the gut microbiome but also the disc microbiome in disc disease and spinal pain. According to a study published this year "Varying biodiversity and abundance between healthy ...and diseased discs were documented with protective bacteria being abundant in normal discs, and putative pathogens abundant in DD [disc degeneration] and DH [disc herniation]" Another study in 2019 looked at the role of the gut microbiome on spinal pathology, these researches looked at the use of rifaximin (an antibiotic) in rats with Ankylosing spondylitis (a painful debilitating spinal disease) and found "Rifaximin also changed the gut microbiota composition with increased Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes phylum ratio, as well as selectively promoting some probiotic populations, including Lactobacillales. Our results suggest that rifaximin suppressed progression of AS [Ankylosing spondylitis] and regulated gut microbiota in AS mice.
