24.01.2022 Another interesting conference series put on by Autism SA. I can highly recommend it !

24.01.2022 This is one of the best examples of what great communication skills look like. It highlights the importance for parents to actively interact with their children from as early as birth, so they acquire their pre- linguistics communication skills. These are essential for children to develop successful language and communication skills.

23.01.2022 Once families, carers, teachers, educators notice the child engages differently it can be hard to know what to do next. Check out my NEW podcast on diagnosis! https://suelarkey.com.au/slp-028-diagnosis-what-to-do-wher/

21.01.2022 An interesting read.

20.01.2022 Yep. Thanks for the reminder Walk Down Autism Lane

19.01.2022 Very true, we often have far too high expectations of us and of our children.

16.01.2022 After a refreshing walk this morning and reflecting on my week, I call myself very lucky to work with so many amazing kids and families. With every week comes a new challenge. I love discovering the different ways of how children think and are processing their thoughts. We call ourselves professionals but it is the life long path of learning and taking on new challenges that gets us there.

16.01.2022 Why are transitions between activities often so hard for neurodivergent people? Erin Human created 'The Tendril Theory' based on lived experience: IMAGE: 'Why i...t’s hard to switch tasks (Let’s call it Tendril Theory).' Line drawings of a person with many curly lines popping out of their head when they are engaged in a task and no lines when they are ready to switch tasks. IMAGE TEXT: 'When I’m focused on something / My mind sends out a million tendrils of thought / Expands into all of the thoughts & feelings / When I need to switch tasks / I must retract all of the tendrils of my mind / This takes some time / Eventually I can shift to the new task / But when I am interrupted or must switch abruptly / It feels like all of the tendrils are being ripped out / That’s why I don’t react well / Please just give me time / To switch tasks when I’m ready.' For some practical tips on how to honour those tendrils while supporting transitions, please see this piece from Carrie Contey, PhD. (view here: tinyurl.com/y4d6vkmo)

13.01.2022 Very well described, as it is often not known how broad our job description is.

11.01.2022 This so true. I see it every day ! All the time, love and effort that all of you dedicate into your childs life makes such a great difference. They are amazing and inspiring individuals who have made big steps all in their own individual way.

10.01.2022 Read that one more time.

09.01.2022 Well worth watching !

09.01.2022 A very interesting read that explains the struggles of many students in the classroom and how these students are often misunderstood.

09.01.2022 Communication is a basic human right. Speech pathologists work hard to ensure everyone is able to communicate to the best of their ability. Today on World Voice Day, we celebrate using your unique voice, no matter how it is you communicate. #bekindwithyourvoice

08.01.2022 What if??? If they cancel the rest of the school year, students would miss 2.5 months of education. Many people are concerned about students falling beh...ind because of this. Yes, they may fall behind when it comes to classroom education... But what if... What if instead of falling behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out... What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing. What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet. What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower? What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well run home? What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less? What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home. What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday? What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place? What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life? What if they are AHEAD?

06.01.2022 This is so true. Just yesterday I observed some children playing at a pond. One group of boys and girls dirty, muddy, having a ball exploring things on the edge of the pond with parents observing from a distance and then sadly children who were not allowed to detach themselves from their parents hands. We were watching and discussed exactly what this article is about. Which are the children who will be able to plan, problem solve and deal with failure ???

05.01.2022 April is Autism Acceptance Month. Many people have an understanding of Autism that is based on little more than stringing together a few popular stereotypes. Th...is video aims to help fill the gaps by cutting through the medical jargon and sharing instead the human side of Autism. In the past few decades the world has come a long way in its understanding of Autism. This is not least due to the contributions of autistic adults shedding insight into their own condition. Autism Explained empowers parents to understand their autistic children and create healthy supportive environments. By combining the experience of an adult on the Spectrum with a single mum who lives this stuff every day, we set you on the path to regain family harmony and actually enjoy time with your kids! 04.01.2022 I would just like to put this out there. If your children are not around special needs children at school and have never been taught that not everyone is the same then maybe you could take 10 min tonight to explain this to them because even though they may not be around these children at school they will encounter them in their lives, as it should be. In the light of recent events on the exclusion of a child who has autism from participating in a school trip and a child with ...Downs Syndrome being kicked out of dance class because she couldn't keep up, I feel the need to share this. There are boys and girls that nobody invites to birthday parties. There are special kids who want to belong to a team but don't get selected because it is more important to win than include these children. Children with special needs are not rare or strange, they only want what everyone else wants: to be accepted !! For all the wonderful children out there. Can I ask a question? Is there anyone willing to copy and paste this post to their wall without sharing it, like I did for those special children out there. Please teach your children to be kind to these beautiful children! #Repost See more

04.01.2022 So true. Through games or play children seem to acquire skills so much easier and are a lot more motivated. I love it when my students think that all we did was playing games, when in actual fact they acquired a new skill.

01.01.2022 A simple and good explanation !
