22.01.2022 Carol’s last day teaching the children was on Monday, after we welcomed Leanne back from her amazing and informative trip overseas. Leanne said she felt so fortunate to have such a wonderful relief teacher to step in her absence. Thank you, Carol! The children have definitely enjoyed their time playing and learning with you and the teaching team.

17.01.2022 Last week, we enjoyed our first of six yoga sessions with Beth Owen. The children each had their own yoga mat and listened to Beth, who taught us breathing and stretching techniques while engaging our imaginations with a relaxing beach story. We even practiced meditation with eye pillows! Thanks to the 2019 committee for supporting the program again this year. Learning how to relax, be mindful, and keep our minds and bodies healthy are much-needed skills for children (and adults) in todays hectic world.

17.01.2022 The children were so excited about the arrival of baby chicks and eggs from the Henny Penny Hatching program! The incubator did a lovely job of keeping the eggs warm, just as a mother hen would do by sitting on the eggs. With careful observation, we witnessed cracks appearing in the eggs and eventually a chicken struggling free! We watched them closely as they walked in the middle of the circle at group time, patted them gently and took turns holding them. We were very gentl...e as they are very little with fragile bones. We wondered how many of the chicks would grow into hens and roosters? We read stories about chicks and learnt some songs about chickens. We also discussed cage eggs and free range eggs and what these terms meant, which lead to opinions about animal cruelty (in this instance, battery hens) and the steps we could take to assist the banning of this practice. Weve also extended our knowledge of oviparous animals. What a wonderful learning experience! See more

14.01.2022 Roll up, roll up! Today the circus came to town. Well, it came to Holland Park Kindy. The Friday group evolved the idea to create their own circus from Maxs excitement about attending a real circus recently. We did some mind mapping - recording our knowledge in our big thinking book. From there, the children decided what they wanted in their circus, and their roles in the show and behind the scenes. Everyone had a part to play - no matter how big or how small... - making it a real group effort. Not everyone was confident to perform on the day, but were involved in the lead up, which is also celebrated. Creating the play presented the opportunity to discuss resilience. Yesterdays rehearsal tested the childrens confidence to perform in front of a group, and to be patient and wait for their turn. It also helped us to explore the notion of practice to perfect a skill and managing disappointment when you cannot enact the task perfectly. We also were able to discuss the question of animal cruelty - how do animals feel if they cannot be in the wild and instead part of a performance for human enjoyment? Our role play invited a lot of important discussion. Today the circus was a great success - thanks to the parents and family members who were able to watch the show and support the children. 01.01.2022 Term 2 is off to an exciting start, with the children enthusiastically exploring their refreshed outdoor environment after it received an upgrade over the Easter holidays. The changes are part of a three stage plan designed to prevent erosion and create more spaces for the Kindy children to play in. The new outdoor features include lots of beautiful new plants, a timber stepping retaining wall (or obstacle course!), and bioswale drain - framed by a bright blue door, which b...rings a sense of ceremony walking into the space. Thank you to Mark and Karen Ryan and their helpers for their hard work constructing the new features, and to Wendy Pell (2018 Grants Officer) and Belinda Petherick (2019 Grants Officer) for successfully securing a Building Stronger Communities grant to fund the upgrade. We also appreciate the HPK committees fundraising efforts for the additional funds needed and our community for their support of these initiatives. See more
