24.01.2022 People, please stop ;)

23.01.2022 Suggestions please - does anyone have any good ideas as to who we go to, who we can talk to who will protect our livelihoods? Think of an industry that supports some of the most vulnerable people in society the carers, the parents, the disabled, the students, older people and now think of a reason why the ATO would shut that industry down. I’ve been working as a transcriber for more than 10 years, as have many, many other Australians. We don’t earn a lot but we’re hap...py we can work from home and look after our families and ourselves and pay our own way. In the last week we’ve been told that we can no longer service the clients we have been for many years; most of us have had our ABNs taken away. I haven’t but it doesn’t make any difference, I’m still not allowed to use it to service my current clients. The transcription industry seems to be the subject of a witch hunt without it many industries will suffer: universities, the police service, hospitals, doctors, legal firms, research companies and many more. Without us, transcription companies will not survive- it is an industry built on work-at-home contractors. The ATO is hell-bent on proving that we are not allowed to work as sub-contractors without considering the consequences for many other industries. I am and many others are - now working illegally as we don’t like the options which are to go on the dole or find a job. (Personally, at the age of 60, in Hobart, I have no chance of that). It’s insanity. See more

21.01.2022 An update on the (Australian) ABR investigation. I have now received confirmation that I am running a business and I am allowed to continue to use my ABN. On the flip side, I've been advised that I can no longer work for my current providers using my ABN. There is no suggestion as to what we are allowed to do, apart from finding our own clients which I've never done or wanted to do. Large companies are not interested in hiring one-man bands - they want their work typed in... a matter of days by a team of typists, not months by one typist. This decision by the ABR will have far-reaching consequences for all sub-contractors, who can now no longer work for their providers in a sub-contractor capacity, using their ABN. Without us, the transcription companies will have no-one to type their transcripts which will mean there will be nowhere for the many businesses that use them to go to to transcribe their research - mostly government bodies in fact. It seems to me that the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. We, the many work-at-home mums and students who choose this as our careers - will have no options but to go on the dole or find a job (an impossibility for me at my age and in Tasmania). See more

15.01.2022 Suggestions please - it's time I changed my business name to one that is more "professional". "Holler For Help" was a fun name aimed at transcription companies. I'm now aiming at universities, research and investigation companies and other larger corporations who probably don't want to holler for help. So, here's a challenge for all the creative heads out there - can you do me a favour and think of something fabulous; something professional but a bit of fun. I'm not keen on things like "Hobart Transcription Services". That's the only tip I have. Thank you in advance!

10.01.2022 Me, in my super suit this week :)

10.01.2022 So the fight is on small business against the ATO. Please, if you are an Australian transcriber, or you run a transcription company, join the fight to protect our industry. Ken Phillips, the Executive Director of Self Employed Australia has been fighting the ATO for more than 10 years and is fully on board and fully prepared to do as much as he can for the transcription industry but he needs our help, he needs as many voices as possible to get involved. Ken wants to hear YOUR story, whatever your experience has been thus far regarding the investigation into our industry and/or cancellation of our rights to work as independent contractors. He can be contacted at [email protected] or on 0412 393 692. Please help him to help us. Your livelihood depends on doing what you can to help.

06.01.2022 $489,580 over 12 months - that's what it's going to cost the government in dole payments to the 35 transcribers it has just put out of business. Why? Why not just leave us happily earning a living as we have been for years. That's just one transcription company. There are so many more - countless people, millions of unnecessarily wasted dollars. I'll come back soon and tell you what forced retirement is like. Such stupidity

03.01.2022 Are they organic demons though?
