22.01.2022 Year 12 Biology students From Redlynch State College had a field day both today and yesterday as they conducted studies in the mangroves and in Thomatis/ Richters creek. Students look at diversity of animal and mangrove species and took plenty of abiotic and biotic data. Great students and great work!

16.01.2022 Several weeks ago HBEEC staff managed to rescue a flying fox that had been caught on a fishing lure hanging from a tree. The hook had gone through her eyelid, jaw and wing and she had to be put under to remove it all. Thank you to our local volunteer wildlife carers who took such great care of her and are helping her on her way to a full recovery.
15.01.2022 A great opportunity for our youth with our friends and partners from Reef Guardian Schools.

13.01.2022 Happy World Wetlands Day! We are lucky enough to live in one of the most diverse wetlands areas in the world with incredible species like the world's largest crocodilian and the exquisite rainbow bee-eater. Our Mangrove and Saltmarsh areas are the natural barriers which preserve and support the Far Northern region and not only do they produce more oxygen per acre than other types of forest, they also can store up to 5 times as much carbon! If you get a chance, celebrate our Wetlands this week by getting out onto one of the many boardwalks in your area- don't forget the insect repellent!
12.01.2022 Today at HBEEC school leaders are working on plans for the upcoming year. In the past groups have established playgrounds and gardens, raised money for charity and contributed in a myriad of other ways to their schools. Can't wait to see what these leaders have planned!
10.01.2022 HBEEC staff proudly present our new video on conducting a mangrove transect using the Mangrove Watch methodology. We have also included quadrat samples of biotic and abiotic data to assist senior students in understanding the complexities of a mangrove ecosystem and to cover senior science mandatory practicals. Supporting information for this mangrove transect approach is available through @CoolAustralia coolaustralia.org/unit/mangrovewatch-years-9-to-12/ Training on the @...MangroveWatch transect method was provided by Jock Mackenzie @EarthwatchAustralia. This training was made possible through The @greatbarrierreeffoundation Community Reef Protection grants Protecting wetlands for the Future program. The Protecting Wetlands for the Future Program is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s @awegov #ReefTrust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. #lovethereef See more
09.01.2022 An incredible info session on Mangroves and their importance by Mangrove Watch co-founder Jock McKenzie. Really worth the watch and a great resource for school groups.
09.01.2022 The king tide and rain yesterday didn't deter Caravonica students from having a great day out on the boats learning about the mangrove environment and the animals and plants within it for their writing tasks. Students were able to identify many birds- like these little black cormorants and examine unique adaptations of mangroves like this cannonball mangrove (Xylocarpus grantatum) fruit. The fruit breaks into individual seed pods which, when collected, can be put back together like a puzzle to obtain the original round shape.
08.01.2022 Keeping our distance and taking the opportunity to get lots of maintenance, resource updates and training done. John and our new teacher Alana hard at work getting our boards back into tiptop condition! What a dynamic duo!
08.01.2022 Plastics in the environment are a huge issue. Have your say on whether or not single use plastics should be banned at https://haveyoursay.des.qld.gov.au/expanded-polystyrene-eps and feel free to share.

Each year senior biology students come out and collect samples the results of which help us to better understand and monitor our mangrove surrounds. Student get to participate in real life scientific studies and the results are used by schools to support the senior science curriculum as well!
01.01.2022 Check out our latest video! This time the HBEEC team are out on Richter's Creek showing how to conduct a Mangrove Watch 'SVAM' (Shoreline Video Assessment Method). Training on the @MangroveWatch transect method was provided by Jock Mackenzie @EarthwatchAustralia. #lovethereef Enjoy!
01.01.2022 Our resident curlews have a new chick on the loose and all three are hiding in this photo. See if you can find the whole family...
01.01.2022 Lots of crustaceans reply on mangroves and one of the most spectacular are the Red Fingered Marsh/Shore Crab - (Parasesarma erythodactyla). These small crabs (approximately 3cm across the carapace), live in burrows and come out to feed on mangrove leaves generally at night. Crabs are extremely important for aerating and bringing nutrients into the surface levels of mangrove soils and this one was showing off his colours just by our centre.
01.01.2022 Check out the experts and citizens scientists who are keeping an eye on our all important mangrove habitats.
