16.01.2022 Of late I have noticed an increase in the number of butterflies in my shade house, pots and veggie patch. I enjoy watching the various butterflies for their bright colours and patterns. A large butterfly with black wing edges, white areas and striking blue dots on its wings stood out in particular. I am not so keen, on the number of caterpillars that is the inevitable result of larger butterfly numbers. The caterpillars have chewed my hibiscus cuttings as fast as I can pr...oduce them. Fortunately the colder weather over the last couple of days has reduced butterfly numbers again. I do not use pesticides to spray for caterpillars. I prefer to use chemicals as little as possible. Although I have used white oil, on a few plants that I have limited stock of to keep some insects away. I just pick off the caterpillars that I do see. Honestly spraying all my plants and cuttings for pests is simply too time consuming. I guess I feel that my time could be better spent on other tasks. For me, if the plant can't recover from general garden pests by itself, with nothing more than good potting mix, and a regular application of fertiliser and time, then I would have to consider whether or not, the plant's features make it worth me keeping it. I am sure that other people have a different view. On a slightly different note, I also saw my first native blue banded bee, in about 3 years, hanging around, so I was delighted. I had thought the drought over the last few years had put an end to the native population. See more
15.01.2022 At the Gatton Village Market today
11.01.2022 Hi, We will be attending the 2nd Gatton Village market on Sunday the 1st November 2020 from 6:30 am to 12:30 pm. This is only the second market to be held in Gatton on the grounds of the Gatton Historical Society just off Lake Apex. The market is a chance for Makers, Growers and Creators to showcase our items. With Christmas only a couple of months away its a good way to get a start on your Christmas presents or for the super organised ( not me!) to finish off the stocking fillers. Or better yet find that inspirational idea for the "hard to buy for" relative that everyone has! Please come and see our selection of plants and herbs.
09.01.2022 MY ZYGOCACTUS IS FLOWERING! 7 July 2020|Plant choices I have a few pink Zygocactus or Cacti, that I have had for a number of years. In previous years they have flowered in May and June, occasionally in April. This year they have decided that July is their month. ... Zygocactus DESCRIPTION: Commonly called the ‘Christmas Cactus’, ‘Holiday Cactus’ and ‘Crabs Claw Cactus’ or simply Zygocactus. Grown for the brilliant flowers these epiphytic plants, these cacti, come from the rain forests of Brazil where they grow on the trunks of other plants. They love a little humidity and make great plants for growing in hanging baskets. Flower colour varies from white through to the brilliant luminescent pinks and purples, and as they flower in winter they add great colour to a patio or warm sheltered position while many other plants are dormant. Easy to grow and with attractive flowers from winter through spring. Unless you have them in soggy soil, it's fairly hard to kill them. Frankly a little neglect is better than overwatering them. Zygocactus is the common name for these plants but they belong in the Schlumbergera species. USES: Indoor and patio plants, hanging baskets, tall pots. Can be secured into trees in tropical gardens and grown like bromeliads or birds nest ferns, which is how they grow in the wild. PLANTING: Plant in gritty free draining compost mix or very free draining soil. Place them somewhere with good light but out of direct sun. They like a cool position in filtered light, in fact they can be reluctant to flower in full sun. I have one of mine sitting under the roof eaves outside my dining room window. They do need cool night-time temperatures to get bud set, usually below 10 C. This might explain their tardiness this year. CARE: Grow them as you would ferns or bromeliads. These plants like a dormant period after flowering where they have cooler temperatures (below 18C) and less water; when temperatures increase, increase the watering and start to feed, as the plant grows. Water when the soil becomes dry, and a little more frequently during hot weather. You'll see the leaves start to wrinkle if the plant is dry or too hot. They don't like soggy soil, but they do like a mist over their leaves. Feed with liquid fertiliser and pinch out the tips after flowering, for better flowering results next year. HEIGHT & WIDTH: 40 cm H x 40 cm W. May grow up to 2 metres across in exceptional conditions. Find us at hollysplants.com.au.
