24.01.2022 Today on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we asked our very own Cristina George, trainer and assessor for Biological sciences in Lab Tech (Biology, Histology, Anatomy and Physiology) a few questions about her journey, her job and her love of science. Q: How did you get into the industry? A: As a profession, I am a veterinarian and started Veterinary Medicine with the aim of helping animals but having many pets throughout the years I realised that working in a... clinic is not my thing. After my Bachelor, I completed a Masters in Laboratory Techniques and then did a PhD in Normal and Pathological Morphology, studying intersexuality and hermaphroditism in domestic pigs. I came to Australia and continued my passion for research, working for Monash Vision Group for the pre-clinical trials of Bionic Vision while also teaching at Holmesglen. Q: What do you love about working in this field of STEM? A: I love working with animals & people but also the boring, repetitive work...I find it very relaxing to be by myself in the lab. And now being in the teaching environment, I love sharing my knowledge and making a difference in someone's career. Q: What advice would you give to other women considering a career in the STEM industry? A: Go for it, don't be afraid to fail (it will happen) but keep on going! Finish this sentence: A career in STEM is rewarding because STEM is never boring." For more information on our science and technology based courses, head to our website http://ow.ly/v5tp50DxbU6

24.01.2022 Meet Daniel. Daniel is currently studying the MSF30418 Certificate III in Glass and Glazing and is employed as an apprentice at South Melbourne Glass. Daniel's advice to anyone considering the course at Holmesglen? "Just give it a go. In the end, you'll have a qualification that will always be in demand and a foot in the door in the construction industry, with many different career paths.... Along with gaining experience on the job, he is developing his skills in the workshop at Holmesglen’s Chadstone campus. Here, he says quality control, safe work practices and general glass craft are the main training areas that have helped him become a leading trades professional. A glass and glazing qualification can lead to a career as a domestic or commercial glazier, plus similar jobs such as a glass cutter or glass edge worker.
