23.01.2022 Part 2 This educational post focuses on what happens when our chyme moves through to the intestines & what might cause any troubles along the way . As always let me know if you have any questions & don’t forget:... Eat the rainbow for diverse gut health Feed your happy bugs fibre! Include resistant starch where possible Stay hydrated Incorporate bitter foods Chew your food Eat mindfully The Intestines Food and the products of digestion pass through the intestine, which is divided into two sections called the small intestine and the large intestine. Small Although the small intestine is narrower than the large intestine, it is the longest section of your digestive tube - measuring about three-and-a-half times the length of your body! It is compromised of mucosal folds, villi & micro villi that allow such a large absorptive surface in such a relatively small place. The small intestine carries out most of the digestive process, absorbing almost all the nutrients you get from foods into your bloodstream. The walls of the small intestine make digestive juices, or enzymes, that work together with enzymes and bile from the pancreas and gallbladder to do this. Insufficient amounts of pancreatic enzymes or bile in the small intestine can cause symptoms such as burping, indigestion, bloating and constipation. In addition, if there is an imbalance of bacteria in the intestine (dysbiosis), this may result in symptoms such as irregular bowel movements, indigestion, or bloating. Large The purpose of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food and get rid of any waste products left over. By the time food mixed with digestive juices reaches your large intestine, most digestion and absorption has already taken place. What's left is mainly fibre, dead cells shed from the lining of your intestines, salt, bile pigments and water. In the large intestine, gut bacteria feed on this mixture. These beneficial bacteria produce valuable vitamins that are absorbed into your blood. Short-chain fatty acids are produced resistant starch.

22.01.2022 It's easy to forget that culinary herbs can be gentle and effective medicines. Mint is energetically cooling - perfect to add to your summer salads on a hot day

17.01.2022 It's no secret that herbal medicine is my favorite tool to use in naturopathic care. No two remedies are ever the same & is always tailored to the individual needs. Sure, herbs (in particular liquid extracts) don't always taste the best but they're so incredibly valuable, we can forgive the fleeting assault to our taste buds. Do you use herbal medicine in your day to day life - what's your favorite remedy? ... Tea? Fresh culinary herbs? Liquid extracts? Let me know in the comments below.

09.01.2022 A gentle Friday reminder to slow down, take a breath, un-clench your jaw & enjoy your weekend.

04.01.2022 Looking for a gentle way to promote sleep & stay asleep? Look no further than this traditional blend of hops, passionflower & valerian. I use Southern Light Herbs for most of my loose leaf blends - organically grown in Australia. You can usually find loose leaf teas at your local health food shop.
