22.01.2022 Celebrating St Bartholomew, Apostle & Martyr. It is assumed that he is the same as Nathaniel in the Gospel of John. Philip brought him to Jesus who calls him "an Israelite in whom there is no deceit." With Thaddeus he is believed to have brought the gospel to Armenia. The two apostles are the patron saints of the Armenian Church.

21.01.2022 St Augustine was born in North Africa in 354. He was passionate and sensual but later admitted that along with the pleasure of his life he also felt empty and tormented. He became a Christian and was baptised by Ambrose, Bishop of Milan on Easter 387. He was ordained priest then later became Bishop of Hippo. He became the most influential theologian of Western Christianity as well as a doctor of the Church. He emphasised the sovereignty and the grace of God. He died August 28 430.

17.01.2022 Born in 540, Gregory was the son of a Roman senator. he pursued a governmental career and became Prefect of the city of Rome in 573. After his father died, he resigned his office, sold his inheritance and became a monk. In 579 the Pope sent him to Constantinople as his representative to the Patriarch. He returned to Rome in 586, and was elected Bishop of Rome 590. Gregory was an astute administrator during a period of political turmoil, He was also an excellent diplomat, gain...ing peace with the Lombards. He initiated a mission to England, sending Augustine (not Augustine of Hippo) with 40 monks to re-establish the English Church. His writings strongly influenced the pastoral tradition of the Church. His spirituality was animated by a dynamic of love and desire for God. Desire was a metaphor for the journey into God. He called himself "Servant of the servants of God". He died in 604. See more

13.01.2022 Today is the Commemoration of the New Guinea Martyrs. In 1901, James Chalmers, Oliver Tomkins and others who were sent to New Guinea by the London Missionary Society were martyred. 40 years later, during World War II, New Guinea was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army. Christians were severely persecuted, and 333 Church workers of all denominations died for their faith. These included twelve Anglicans: two English priests, Vivian Redlich and Bernard Moore, who remained with their people after the invasion of 1942, but were betrayed and killed, eight Australians and two Papuan evangelists, Leslie Gariadi and Lucian Tapiedi.

12.01.2022 Today is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on this day in both the Eastern and Western Churches. It falls nine months after the Feast of Mary's Conception on December 8. Today's feast thus stands on the boundary between the old and new covenants, ushering in the dispensation of grace. With the Birth of Mary, 'a shrine is built for the Creator of the Universe'.

08.01.2022 Today we celebrate Matthew, apostle, evangelist & martyr. Jesus calls Matthew, a tax collector to "Follow me." Jesus doesn't ask us to sign on the line or subscribe to a list of rules. He calls us to follow him which includes getting to know him. It's personal, not transactional. Matthew "got up and followed him". The Greek root for "got up" is anastas which describes the Resurrection (anastasis) of Jesus from the dead. Following Jesus is a resurrection, a new birth to true life.

07.01.2022 The Beheading of John the Baptist reminds us that proclaiming the truth can be costly. John fearlessly spoke the truth to the corrupt King Herod Antipas whose rash words resulted in John's execution. We are reminded to pray for those who speak the truth to power today. Egotism, greed, corruption, lying and immorality always take offence at the truth.

07.01.2022 Monica was born in North Africa to Christian parents in 332. She married Patricius, a pagan who, with their son Augustine, later became a Christian. Augustine attributed his conversion to his mother's example and devotion. "She never let me out of her prayers that you, O God, might say to the widow's son, 'Young man, I tell you, arise.'" She died in 387.

06.01.2022 Emma Caroline Silcock was born in England in 1858.She showed leadership ability at school. She felt God's call to the religious life and joined the Anglican Community of St Mary the Virgin, Wantage, as a novice in 1884 and took the name Esther. After a fall and six months in plaster she was sent to Australia where she had relatives. Melbourne was a big and prosperous city but behind it was poverty an disease. She formed a religious order of women and the Community of the Holy... Name was formed. It grew and cared for and fed many of the poor and needy of Melbourne. A House of Mercy was built at Cheltenham, and later hospitals. The Rule of the Community emphasized prayer, sacrifice and the apostolic vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The Community has had great influence on the Anglican Church in Australia. It continues today and emphasizes hospitality, spiritual direction and retreats. Mother Esther died in 1931. Today is her commemoration. See more

01.01.2022 Bernard of Clairvaux entered the Benedictine abbey at Citeaux in France, in 1112, bringing a number of friends and family members with him, including some of his brothers. He was a leader of the reform within Benedictine orders at that time. He was sent to establish a new monastery at a place he called Clairvaux, or 'Valley of Light'. He built up the community through his excellent leadership. Bernard preached widely and powerfully. He was also a gifted theologian. Hundreds of monastic houses were established in what became known as the Cistercian system. He died on this day in 1153.

01.01.2022 On Boxing Day, the second day of Christmas, we remember Stephen, the first martyr for Christ. Stephen was stoned to death following his defense before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish Council. False witnesses had been brought in to give "evidence" against him. It is believed that Stephen was one of the first seven deacons set apart by the apostles. He played a large part, especially through his preaching, in the growth of the Christian Church in Jerusalem. May we follow his example in sharing the Good News of Christ in our communities.
