25.01.2022 Finally, we present last week’s sermon from Steve. He got a little worked up here, replacing the dynamics of singing (which we can’t do anymore) with some extra drama! Please read the set readings for the day. The story of Joseph and his brothers and the story of the Canaanite woman. So much to learn and reflect on. So much goodness that can come from the heart if we offer ourselves to God. 1st Reading - Genesis 45.1-15 1 Then Joseph could no longer control himself before al...Continue reading

24.01.2022 Voice of the day Keep your language. Love its sounds, its modulation, its rhythm. But try to march together with [people] of different languages, remote from your own, who wish like you for a more just and human world. - Dom Hélder Câmara

23.01.2022 Voice of the day I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. - Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer of the day ... God, may we always utilize the tools of truth and love in our work for justice and liberation.

23.01.2022 Dear Holy Innocents Family, No doubt you are all aware of and lamenting the new cases of Covid19 that have hit our State. It is a difficult time but I would ask that you abide by whatever restrictions the Health Dept ask of us and pray for those infected and those on the front line of treatment. We remain blessed that we live in a society with both the means and the capacity to manage the outbreak effectively. We know there are no guarantees about the outcomes and, whether th...Continue reading

16.01.2022 During our time of Covid lockdown - and now when we can't sing together - we have enjoyed a lot of the music of the Porter's Gate Project. Porter's Gate is from the USA and made up of brilliant musicians, singers and theologians, writing music that is both beautiful and deeply suffused with scripture. It also shows that contemporary Christian music does not have to follow the path of shallow, self-centred theology or mega-church styling. The linked article is written by another Porter's Gate fan and musical director who values and explains their work. The latest two albums have just been released and focus on Justice and Lament. Our Associate Priest, Matthew Anstey, is a specialist on lament in the Psalms and this is very much in that vein. Bless those who offer their artistic gifts to the people of God and may we be grateful.

16.01.2022 Dear Holy Innocents Family, I shall be writing to the Premier to complain that I had to write all those words earlier today and now I have to rescind them!! Outrageous!! Most of you will have heard that we are all now confined to our homes for the next six days (as of midnight). I know this will be very difficult for some of you. Be assured of my prayers and please reach out if you are struggling. For others, this might come as a welcome quiet time. Others will have wonderf...ul events planned that can no longer go ahead. We will all respond differently and all of your circumstances are different so please be gentle with one another and with yourself. This time will pass. We will need to be prepared for life not to return to normal after six days though. Restrictions of lesser severity will be in place for another five weeks, even id this first lockdown helps the battle against the virus. We’re in this for the long haul and now is the time to make decisions that will help you and those you live with to manage this as well as possible. There are great books to read and games to play. There is planning to be done and prayers to be prayed. Perhaps the hardest thing for many of us will be to slow down, but this difficult pause allows us to do exactly that. To go slow and to take time. I hope you will be able to do this. Our fears and anxieties are not helped by rushing around. Can I also ask that you do not go out and panic buy. It’s only six days and we can go out once a day to shop. Buying more than we need simply deprives others of what they need. We are better than that. We will not be at church this week. I hope I might be able to put something (not a full service) online to gather us and you are welcome to participate with that. The following week..let’s wait and see. I encourage you to take the opportunity to spend some time quietly with God, listening as much as talking. I also encourage you to have a listen to Peter Enns’ podcast, which I find very interesting and valuable in my faith journey: https://peteenns.com/podcast/ Peace be with you. Let’s get through this together and support each other in practical ways. A quick call to someone on their own can make the world of difference. Being remembered matters. Here are the words of a classic hymn that are very appropriate for this moment: Prayer for Peace and Calm Dear Lord and Father of humankind, Forgive our foolish ways; Reclothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives Thy service find, In deeper reverence, praise. Drop Thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and Thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm. - John Greenleaf Whittier Bless you all. Regards, Steve

15.01.2022 Dear Holy Innocents family, Another week has rolled by and the world has changed again. The result of the American election is still contested but noticeably clear to all who recognise that the system has worked and is not corrupt, as some are falsely claiming. Let us continue to pray for President Trump as he finalises his time at the Whitehouse and for President Elect Biden as he prepares to lead. In Australia, a horrible Canberra-based culture of unethical, immoral, and de...Continue reading

15.01.2022 In normal life we hardly realise how much more we receive than we give, and life cannot be rich without such gratitude. It is so easy to overestimate the importance of our own achievements compared with what we owe to the help of others. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

15.01.2022 An important commemoration.

15.01.2022 ABM's new Climate Change studies, written by Russell Rollason, have garnered a great review. Our Fr Steve played a small part in the production of these. A great way to engage with climate change from a faith perspective.

14.01.2022 Let's keep supporting ABM as they continue to reach out into the world with the love of God.

13.01.2022 Voice of the day We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice. We are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer... Prayer of the day Righteous God, help us to go deeper in our pursuit of justice. May we work not just to address the harm done, but also to dismantle the systems that produce harm.

12.01.2022 Very interesting and exciting news as the Appellate Tribunal (the chief legal body of the Anglican Church of Australia) rules that the liturgical blessing of same-sex, civil marriages is acceptable if dioceses choose to follow that path. A full copy of the 123 page ruling is here: https://anglican.org.au///AT-Wangaratta-11112020-Final.pdf

10.01.2022 Dear Holy Innocents family, Are your heads spinning as fast as mine is? It’s been quite a week and we’ve been locked-down (in fact we still are locked-down) and now we’re waiting for Saturday midnight with great joy. Keep your lamps trimmed and burning as the song goes....Continue reading

10.01.2022 From Steve Dear Holy Innocents family, It’s wonderful to welcome the Rev’d Matthew Anstey, our Associate Priest, back to celebrate the Eucharist for us this Sunday (the 4th). Matthew’s wisdom and preaching are always refreshing, and I deeply appreciate the chance to have a Sunday off! I wish you all well as you worship....Continue reading

08.01.2022 Fr Steve's Easter sermon as recorded at the 10am service on Easter Day 2021. Holy Innocents Anglican Church,Belair, South Australia. For those who prefer to listen rather than to read.

08.01.2022 Melbourne Anglican coverage of the decision on same-sex, civil marriage blessings.

07.01.2022 Our Pentecost 15 - or second Sunday in the Season of Creation - sermon. A little bit of Gerardian theology and an examination of how these readings (please read them) ask us which world we want to inhabit. The offered world of God's kingdom in which all people are released and forgiveness is the rule? Or the world we too often inhabit, where violence and control are the languages. The readings: First Reading Exodus 14.19-31...Continue reading

07.01.2022 These are the Climate Change studies Steve spoke about in church today. Available for free download from ABM, they are a huge help in understanding the Climate Crisis and what can be done. The latest in a fantastic series of apps and studies produced by ABM, by Australians, for the Australian church.

06.01.2022 The Resurrection Wave An Easter Sermon The resurrection of Jesus was a hidden event. Jesus didn’t rise from the grave to baffle his opponents, to make a victory statement, or to prove to those who crucified him that he was right after all. Jesus rose as a sign to those who had loved him and followed him that God’s divine love is stronger than death....Continue reading

04.01.2022 This week at church...Covid Marshals! Yeh-hah!

04.01.2022 HOLY SATURDAY PRAYER FOR MYANMAR Lord God, Creator of all that is, your Son Jesus Christ has harrowed hell and put death to flight. ... Bring your healing to Myanmar that swords be beaten into ploughshares and spears into pruning-hooks. Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice because justice and an abundance of peace shall arise. This we ask through our risen Lord, Jesus Christ, who lives with you and the Holy Spirit in glory for ever and ever. Amen. See more

03.01.2022 From Steve Dear Holy Innocents family, Firstly, a big thank you to the Rev’ds Matthew, Jeff, Paula and Wendy for filling in while I was away on Anglican Board of Mission (ABM) work in Far North Queensland. In this Covid year we have had a lot of my voice and I hope that having a break has been refreshing for you. It’s wonderful to have such good colleagues and friends of the parish who are willing to step in and preach the Gospel in different and exciting ways....Continue reading

02.01.2022 At Holy Innocents we are blessed to have brilliant and faithful members of the congregation who can step up to the lectern and take us deep into God's heart. On Palm Sunday 2021, Dr Carly Osborn spoke to us about the true nature of God. Enjoy.

02.01.2022 Another beautiful morning in church yesterday, during this Season of Creation. There are so many challenges in the world and in our lives, but God is faithful. Sometimes we fail to see the beauty all around us, so overwhelmed, as we can be, by looming clouds. These staggeringly lovely orchids were grown by Allan and Kate, the product of loving, careful gardening over many years. Each blossom an intricate masterpiece, itself shaped over millennia. Perhaps, as we contemplate this delicate beauty, we might also rejoice in the way each one of us has been shaped by love throughout our lives. What an extraordinary privilege it is to be alive today.

01.01.2022 Verse of the day Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8 Voice of the day ... If we in fact owe one another love, then we owe one another justice, which includes repairing the damages done, individually and collectively, in community. Valerie Bridgeman From 'Sojourners'
