25.01.2022 Courts 3 and 4 are dry for play this afternoon,if no more rain.
24.01.2022 At this stage there is no problem with the courts for Saturday Arvo Tennis. But as we all know things can change quickly.
23.01.2022 A beautiful spring night and a great turn up of 15 players.Disappointing that Michael has got mixed up with the border Bull-and unable to make it but good to see Jayden with a return to form that will make his fan club happy. The happiest chap of the night was Craig Skuse who is off to Lift Gerry’s profits at Harvey Norman.
21.01.2022 Update of information.Never rely on weather forecasts.Courts 3and 4 are almost dry and providing there are no more showers(slim chance)play will be on this afternoon.
21.01.2022 Holy Name were hosts to several events of the 55th Veterans Tournament. It was great to see the top players returning to play in this tournament. In the 45 mixed doubles locals Charmaine Hazzard and Greg Stenzel lost in a tie breaker set to Michell Townson and V Illangasinghe. On Sunday morning the over 55 men’s singles saw some great tennis played.Robert King won the final over Frank Byrnes. It was a return to Holy Name Courts for Frank who played his junior tennis here. His father also Frank was a foundation member of the Has Beens Club.Frank hopes to return for our Christmas Party in December.
20.01.2022 Our Patron Bill Owens celebrated his 90th birthday today.Bill started playing at Holy Name in the early 1980s and even after he was unable to play was a regular visitor to the club he loved.Bill is doing it pretty tough at the moment but really appreciated the club members helping him share his birthday cake today.
20.01.2022 Our gardeners have done it again! Laurel Bank Park is really putting on a show for the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. Can you guess the theme?
19.01.2022 No problems with courts for Has Beens this afternoon. Will all depend on predicted showers later.
19.01.2022 No problems with courts for this afternoon.
18.01.2022 Just stating the obvious .No night tennis tonight.
18.01.2022 No problems with the courts for play this morning.
18.01.2022 With the weather clearing there should be no problem with tennis tomorrow.
17.01.2022 Spring is not far away judging by the beautiful weather today. It drew a great crowd and enjoyable competitive matches were the result. As far as I can see the new rules that come into force tomorrow should not affect us providing we keep sticking to the Covid rules of distancing.
16.01.2022 The Has Beens Club Will See this year out this afternoon and some will probably say good riddance to 2020.Next year can only be better. We hope so!
16.01.2022 In 1990 after we upgraded our lights and gave us 4 well lit courts I saw a need for a social night of tennis where players could attend if and when it suited them. Friday night was chosen as a great way to start the weekend off.The Motto has always been we don’t play for sheepstations and it is cheaper and better for your health than a night at the pub.Over these years it has proved a great way to introduce newcomers to our town to the tennis scene.Even last night that hap...pened when we welcomed Carmen from Warwick to join fellow Warwick players Michael and Ed.I estimate that over the years over 250 players have come and gone in that time and I can safely say that only has left not being happy and I don’t think even a major Lotto win would have brought a smile to her face. Last night brought a smile to my face with all four courts being used.A special thanks go to players like Phil,Joan, Louise and Graham who over many years have been the real regulars.Really where do you getter better value for money,3 hours of tennis for $5. See more
16.01.2022 Another great roll up and all enjoyed the lovely conditions. The monthly winner was the Crows Nest Poet,Paul Fleming.Great to see a win to someone who travels every week for his game.Paul will make good use of having a trip to BottleO at the Stock Exchange HotelA tip to all visit the Stock Exchange to see what great job Steve has done with the renovations.
15.01.2022 Another record was set on Sunday when a record 28 players turned up.It does present a bit of a problem with only 4 courts but the majority understand that this can be managed. We now play a short juice so sets will still be competitive but take a bit shorter time. After talking to players from Gympie last weekend they told me they only have a total of 26 members in the whole town so I think we are travelling great.
14.01.2022 These U3A tennis players were not going to let a freezing afternoon interfere with their game of tennis.
11.01.2022 It is a sad day for our club with the passing of our dearly loved former member Dot Eather. Dot and her late husband Don were the stalwarts of the club in the 1990s and early years of this century.Dot never lost interest in the club and even after she was unable to play was a regular visitor to keep in touch with her many friends.REST IN PEACE and join Don in heaven.
11.01.2022 The Glemlins of technology were really at work in my last post.Courts 3and4 are dry for this mornings play and all will be by afternoon.
10.01.2022 A good roll up and a beautiful day saw some top tennis enjoyed by all.Di Vonhoff is off to Rebel to spend her vouchers from being the lucky winner of the monthly draw.It was a pleasure to welcome Kevin Costello into the membership of this great club.I know you will enjoy the play as much as all our old members will enjoy playing against you. This photo shows his style.(apart from the minor foot fault).
10.01.2022 After weeks of dry it has changed but not enough to stop play this morning.7 mls ,just enough to lay the dust.
09.01.2022 2021 was off to a good start with 18 playing some great tennis until the storm had its say.It meant an early finish but not before Loraine McMahon was the lucky members draw winner.Pity she forgot to wear the club shirt to clean up completely but it meant Robert Bulgarelli Picked up the bonus. We look forward to another top year.
07.01.2022 Kurt’s 3 and 4 are allay cry o play his morning an others will be by afternoon session.
07.01.2022 Courts 3and 4 are dry for Wednesday morning ladies so have fun before the storms arrive again later.
06.01.2022 This article appeared in this weeks edition of the Highfields Herald. It is a tribute to the community spirit of Paul.Paul is also one of our most respected and loyal players at Holy Name. While a lot of people will not travel around the corner to take part in events Paul does the trip from Crows Nest almost every Sunday and now since his retirement has fulfilled his ambition and become a Has Been on Thursday afternoon.I remember in the early 2000s I met Paul at a Veterans Tournament and he told me he planned to live at Crows Nest some day.I said well Holy Name is the club for you.Thankfully some years later he arrived and our club is the winner.
06.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon I received a phone call asking if Tennis was on last night .As usual I said, yes you will be very welcome. After so many calls from Gunnar’s who never turn up I was just waiting to see. This call ended with a great nights tennis with father and son Tippa and Ino from Bundaberg who were in Toowoomba supporting his daughter and sister playing net ball. Those lucky enough to be present just loved their friendly attitude and hope we can welcome them back in the future.I do have a photo but not being smart with technology am having trouble downloading from a new device.
03.01.2022 Sorry players the last storm left this ,see you next week.
03.01.2022 Courts are all dry after 50 mls of storm rain.
03.01.2022 Even with a stormy afternoon threatening we were able to get some good sets in before the rain arrived.I am now able to post the photo of our visitors from Bundaberg who had a great time with us on Friday night. You will be most welcome again Tippa and Ino.
03.01.2022 The 69th season of the Toowoomba &District Night Tennis commenced last night at Holy Name Courts. It might not be the same as the glory days of the 1960s when up to 54 teams played on 3 nights of the week on every available court around the town.It has changed with the times but still produces top tennis in a more semi- social atmosphere.Due to the forced early end to the last season the winners were presented with the trophy’s last night. The winners were Jayden Peck,Div 1 and Kathy Langdale Div 2. They proudly hold the Mel Martin Memorial Shield.
03.01.2022 Sorry Friday night players,as you will see from the photo we won’t be playing tonight.Monthly draw will be next week when Josh and Michael will be in charge.
03.01.2022 No tennis tonight with storm coming. If it does not rain out of this I will never forecast again.
02.01.2022 Tennis players of a Sunday.Advise-stay in bed and stay warm.
01.01.2022 No problems with courts this morning.
01.01.2022 Next weekend Toowoomba Tennis will hold the Veterans Tournament for the 55th time.Kieth Dighton ran the first one in Australia and it caught on like wildfire and are now held in nearly every city in Australia. They became so popular that our local one suffered with low numbers but this year most are returning because a lot have been cancelled. On a personal note this will be my 33rd in a row.In 1988 my mate Leo Butler and I won the over 40 doubles.
01.01.2022 What a lovely spring day and we broke a record with 26 players turning up .Especially rewarding is the younger players who are now enjoying the quality of the competition.
