25.01.2022 Continuity of care (care by a known midwife) which is typical in homebirth midwifery care, is proven to be the gold standard of care. WHY is this not reflected in QLD maternity system? Here’s the research: Australian studies have shown benefits for women who have a known midwife. For example, an evaluation of a midwifery group practice in Adelaide included women who were high, medium and low risk and compared the outcomes for women who received continuity of midwifery care wi...th those who did not. Women who received continuity of midwifery care had fewer assisted births, fewer labour inductions, less epidural analgesia, no significant differences in post-partum haemorrhage rates, being admitted to hospital in pregnancy or the baby being admitted to Special or Intensive Care Nurseries. Women who received care from a known midwife valued the continuity of care, accessibility, the personal and professional attributes of the midwife and were highly satisfied with the care they received. (Tracy et al., 2013) Important secondary findings included 30% more spontaneous onset of labour, less induction of labour, less severe blood loss and more likelihood of breastfeeding after 6 weeks and 6 months. (Turnbull et al., 2009). #midwiferybasedcare #homebirth #bornathome #homebirthissafe #betteroutcomes #naturalbirth #qldgovernment #makeachange #ppm #homebirthqld

24.01.2022 Thinking about a home birth, planning a home birth and intending to give birth at home is a powerful act that research now shows reduces experiences of birth interventions and untoward maternal outcomes among low risk woman. Your story of considering, planning and intending to birth at home (regardless of where you end up birthing) is so welcome at HBQ support group; every story has the power to support other women in their consideration of home birth and we welcome them all. Please message HBQ on Facebook or email [email protected] if you’d like to share your home birth story at our November support group.

18.01.2022 Posted @withregram @hygieiahealthltd In Australia, since the pandemic hit we've seen a 500% increase in home births in some private midwifery practices. Which... is great right? And it sounds like a huge number, but bearing in mind the home birth rate prior to Covid was about 1.7% the overall homebirth rate is still comparatively low compared to hospital/medicalised birth. Read on... Further stats show that since the pandemic 26% of women were reconsidering their place of birth with a strong preference for home birth. But of those 26%, more than half (60%) couldn't find a home birth midwife, 39% did find a midwife, but found they were fully booked, and 3% decided on freebirthing. So what do these numbers tell us? We already know from the various research papers and the examples from around the world that home birth IS a safe option. Clearly there is a strong shift and pull towards home births given the increase seen, especially since Covid. More and more people are opting for home birth or free birth in the face of minimal options. But the practices supporting home birth are at capacity, access to midwifery-model care to support home birth is still limited for so many, there are financial barriers, and let's not forget the massively medicalised system. cont in comments... #homebirth #birth #birthoutsidethesystem #freebirth #midwiferymodel #midwiferymodelofcare #childbirthincrisis #naturalbirth #birthingoptions #birthcentres #womencentredcare #demedicalisebirth

15.01.2022 I had to post this as I am a mother who beautifully home birthed in the peak of COVID-19, 2020. I found these words very touching and sections became part of my nightly birth meditation. Powerful words by @spiritysol . Dear mama. This is hard, I know. Life is weird right now. So big. So heavy. So uncertain. It’s all swirling around and sometimes it feels like it’s going to pull us under. Each day your belly gets bigger and you wonder what things will be like when it’s your t...ime to give birth. Or maybe you’re so close to birth that there’s no longer room for wonder- you’re faced with the monumental task of simply surrendering to the chaos of this situation. It’s ok if you’re angry mama. It’s ok if you cry and scream and sob into a pillow at the unfairness of it all. It’s ok if you come undone. There is no guidebook for how to peacefully be pregnant during a global pandemic. You get to make the rules and it’s ok if they’re messy. But after you’ve screamed and sobbed and cursed the world, take a deep breath. Put your hand on your heart. Let it get quiet and you will hear what you know deep down. You can do this. You will do this. You will birth beautifully. Your baby will be born into love. Into peace. Into the safety of your arms. Her first cry will light up the room with the purest joy. It will be magical. It will heal the hearts of so many. Babies born into this time are our medicine. They are our reminder that life goes on- that goodness prevails. That this is temporary and a bright future awaits. And you sweet mama are carrying that medicine. You are holding the holy light. You’ve been given the powerful task and glorious gift of birthing a new world- of welcoming life onto a planet at a peak moment of transformation. The little soul within you was made for this. You were made for this. You are stronger and braver than you’ve ever known and now is your time to step into that power. It’s ok to feel small, to feel scared in the face of all that’s happening right now. But if you dig deeper, if you tune out all the noise around you and listen to your heart, you’ll hear the heartbeat of the whole universe and you’ll know that all is well. You are held. You are safe. You are not alone. You are carried by all the women who came before you- all those birthing beside you- and all those who will follow in your path. See more

13.01.2022 It's 2020: The year of the Nurse and Midwife. 200 years since Florence Nightingale apparently....I thought I'd have another look at the history that links witch...es and midwives. It's fascinating history. This is freely available online - below is an audio book link and also a .pdf link... audiobook: https://archive.org/detai/WitchesMidwivesAndNursesAudioZine .pdf: https://www.academia.edu//Witches_Midwives_and_Nurses_A_Hi

13.01.2022 A valid choice any time and certainly during these uncertain times...

12.01.2022 Well would you look at these stats. These midwives worked extremely hard holding space for the women in their care. A real testament to the gold standard of continuity of midwifery care and homebirth.... Thank you for doing what you do

12.01.2022 You CAN birth big babies. This little guy was over 9lbs! I can’t get over his rolls and thick cord! @wildoakbirth

12.01.2022 Birth on county... every woman's right.

11.01.2022 Counting down the days until the Brisbane film screening of Birth Time. Do you have your ticket?

10.01.2022 Apologies to those that may be looking for birth support contacts or how to join Homebirth QLD via our website at the moment. Unfortunately we are experiencing some temporary website issues and it is currently unavailable. We will endeavour to rectify this as soon as possible and will update you immediately, thank you for your patience.

10.01.2022 I think the qld gov maternity website needs a little revision to reflect the current evidence and understand why we choose to homebirth. It’s certainly more relaxing but more so we choose to because birthing at home is significantly safer for most women and babies. With a 1 in 3 chance of birth trauma, we choose to birth In our own safe space. The disadvantages are actually the out of pocket costs and availability of midwives in women’s local areas. We deserve better than this. We need better access to safer, evidence based care. It’s time. #birthtime #homebirth #homebirthissafe #maternity #qldmaternity #maternityreform #privatemidwifery #qldgov #homebirthqld

05.01.2022 Edit: Thank you so much everyone! This has been a huge help and it looks like we have found enough places to try for now. Ella’s Mum will get Ella’s specialist ...to fax through the scripts soon. You’ve all been absolutely amazing and have helped this Mama find life saving medicine for her little girl, saving her an enormous amount of stress and possibly saving Ella’s life. You all deserve a huge hug! Thank you all so much ************************************* Please help. This is URGENT! We have a mum contact us about her child Ella, who has a rare and chronic medical condition. They’re running out of her life saving medication and can’t find any anywhere. If you live in Melbourne or close by could spare a few minutes to call your local pharmacy and ask if they may possibly have a medication called PANZYTRAT 25,000 in stock. It’s out of stock at supplier level and they have no idea when it will be in. This is a life saving medication for Ella, she needs it with every meal in order to absorb essential fats and vitamins or she gets incredible pain and diarrhoea which with her condition can be fatal. Unfortuently she developed an intolerance to Creon which is the only alternative Ella’s Mum has only 5 days supply left, it’s been on back order since October 25. Covid is hampering supplies so we need to find this medication urgently. Unfortunately RCH don’t stock it. If you find a chemist stocking this medication please post the chemists store name, phone number, fax number and address. It will save Ella’s Mum so much time trying to collate all of the replies Thank you Melbourne. Please share this as fast and far as you can. It really is urgent.

03.01.2022 The Queensland Act provides the strongest human rights protections in the country due to a couple of reasons. The first is that it includes a complaints process... administered by us at the Commission (something which doesn’t exist in the ACT or Victoria, the only other states or territories to have human rights laws in place), which means people have a centralised, accessible and affordable complaints option, rather than having to rely on litigation. More on this later in the month but there’s info at https://buff.ly/3ldbKh8 The second is the breadth of the rights protected by the Act. They include - A specific section which spells out protected cultural rights of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples; - The right to education, which is protected in the ACT but not Victoria; and - The right to access health services, which is an Australian first. Starting tomorrow we’ll be focussing on the rights the Act protects one at a time, but in the meantime you can find more info on our website at . [Image: a red and gold speech bubble sits on a white and aqua background. Text inside the speech bubble reads ‘What makes Queensland’s Human Rights Act unique?’ At the bottom of the tile is the QHRC logo and website address (https://buff.ly/359DDAR) and the #HRM2020 hashtag].

03.01.2022 We had a wonderful turn out today for the first homebirth meet up of the year at Annerley Baptist church. It was an honor to meet all that attended and shared the space. THANKYOU to the incredible women who shared such empowering birth stories. It was a morning of connection, support, love, learning and fun. The children had a blast too! We welcome you to our next meeting on the 8th of March in Annerley, Brisbane. #homebirth #maternity #privatemidwifery #baby #birth #homebirthqld #parentsgroup #connecting #community

02.01.2022 An infrequently shared image of birth but an important one to see. Some babies, regardless of their place of birth, require help. Midwives are highly educated and experience in emergency care of mums and babies. They also carry equipment for resuscitation. If baby or mum require ambulance care or hospital transfer, the relationship and support of a known midwife (continuity of Care) can have a significant impact on your experience and improve maternal outcomes. Thank you @fir...stcoastmidwifery for the share. Did you know that Florida Licensed Midwives are trained and certified in Neonatal Recusitation and CRP bi-annually. We carry the equipment necessary to provide immediate assistance to babies who need a little extra help after birth. In this birth, baby Freya’s heart rate was great but she needed support in taking her first few breaths. The midwives acted calmly and quickly right in moms lap with her still attached to her cord. Emergencies look a little different with midwives. @laurenfriedmanphotos it’s the details for me #encaul #amnioticfluid #jacksonvillebirthphotographer #birthstoriesnefl #jacksonvillephotographer #jacksonvilledoula #jaxmomlife #jaxmoms #jaxmomsblog #jaxmaternitydirectory #homebirthbaby #homebirth #homebirthing #homebirthmama #bornathome #homesweethomebirth #birthyourway #birthworker #birthmatters #stopcensoringbirth #normalizebirth #givingbirth #birthwithoutfear #birthstories #birthphotographer #birthisbeautiful #empoweredbirth #bumpbirthandbeyond #takebackbirth
