24.01.2022 I was struck by the beauty of this diary entry I read yesterday and thought I would share. It was written by Stan Arneil in his POW diary while still held captive after about 3 1/2 years and the horrendous experience of the Burma-Thailand railway: "The quietness of the acres of the gardens with all the resplendent colours, reds and greens and a background of island studded sea, gives me such a happy feeling that all my depression vanishes. There is something so simple about t...he tilling of the soil that I can see why the peasant races are usually so backward in change or revolution. The soil gives a tranquility to the soul. All the Chinese peasants here have it on their faces. No wonder they are so often philosophers. They have all day to ponder on the mysteries of nature and it is a pity we do not follow their example, slightly anyway." 30/10/1944, published in One Man's War. See more

06.01.2022 The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests. It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard.
