What I knew going to school years ago from a textbook either no longer applies or has been updated. . In the age of personalized nutrigenomics, and knowing more about food and its effects on us, being on a diet seems rather ‘old-school’. We now know that the body fluxes based on genetic variants, en...vironmental triggers, microbiome spheres of influence, and other mental-emotional exposures, all of which add to the greater eating context. . The second word, anti-aging is one that has given me a visceral response over the years. How can we be ‘against’ ourselves from the moment of birth as we moved along the aging trajectory? I’m simply pro-vitality, or living the best we can in the moment with quality of life. . We are also learning that maybe ‘stress’ is not such a bad thing after all. in all, it’s not so much the ‘stress’ we need to focus on, but the resilience it creates in the body, or the flexibility we can develop as a result of accommodating triggers or stressors. . When I think ‘exercise’, I think of formulaic ways of moving the body rather than being in true flow states of having more movement in whatever form throughout the day as we live our lives. Functional fitness (as I like to call it) is the intermittent moving in between being more stationary. . With ‘supplements,’ our sophistication has been ramped up and now we understand that it’s more about targeting pathways, modulating processes, and creating balance through specific blends of nutrients rather than simply supplementing the diet with what we think we might be lacking based on symptoms. We are getting smarter with respect to how intelligent these nutrients truly are and act in our bodies. . ‘Antioxidant’ brings back memories of me being in graduate school studying carotenoids. Now we know they do much more than protect the body from oxidative stress. They are cell signaling agents; they are functional components of tissues; they can modulate and make the cell adapt better with environmental exposures. See more
