25.01.2022 On International Women's Day, please take just a couple of minutes to listen to Dame Enid Lyons tell how she approached gaining her colleague's acceptance in Australia's House of Representatives - the only female in the House with 78 members. What a woman! https://www.abc.net.au//80d/stories/2012/01/19/3414759.htm

25.01.2022 On April 28, 1915 Joe Lyons married Enid Burnell. Their very successful marriage ended after only 24 years when Joe sadly died, leaving Enid as a widow with 11 children. Dame Enid in her later years said that, above all else, her marriage was her greatest achievement. She and Joe shared an incredible partnership, both as a married couple and as a political power-couple. The 2007 Prime Ministers Treasures series featured Joes love letters to Enid as one of our national treasures - watch it through the link below! https://www.nfsa.gov.au/collect//joseph-lyons-love-letters

21.01.2022 On 7 April 1939 (80 years ago today) Joe Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia, died in office. The editorial comments below, from the Courier Mail, were typical of the feelings being shared throughout the Commonwealth. The country mourned him, and stood sympathetically in support of his grief stricken family. VALE, JOSEPH LYONS BY the death of Mr. J. A. Lyons, a great Empire Statesman has passed, and Australia has lost a leader who was peculiarly fitted by talent and temperame...nt for the tremendous task of guiding his country through the troubled days which are upon us. History books of the future will assess at its true value the devoted and unselfish service he gave in un-stinted measure to the people of the Commonwealth. It is no over-statement to say that his death was directly caused by the increasing burdens of responsibility which he had assumed in a critical hour of his countrys destiny. Rising superior to mental and bodily fatigue he drove himself relentlessly in the service of the land he loved so well. His sacrifice on the altar of public duty is the crowning triumph of a life dedicated to the welfare of the Australian people. Whatever their creed or political belief, they will deeply mourn the passing of a true patriot and a big Australian.

21.01.2022 Our Garden Fete is open and busy.

17.01.2022 May is the National Trusts Heritage Festival and the theme this year is This Place Matters. Dame Enid Lyons once opened a speech in Parliament with the old question, What is home without a mother, but went on to say perhaps a more pertinent question is what is mother without a home? For this years Heritage Festival we celebrate homes, and we celebrate mothers - and where better than Home Hill, once described by Dame Enid, mother of 12, as the most densely populated ...home in Australia? And we have the perfect opportunity to celebrate all of that with the arrival of a new Royal baby. Join us for a Royal Baby Shower - an afternoon tea, full of fun and bubbles, as we wet the head of yet another baby (albeit a Royal one) at Home Hill. Please dress for the occasion (hats are optional) We are also supporting our local community by asking our guests to bring a small item for baby bundles to be donated to the CWA for our local Hospital Auxiliary (details of what we need are available on booking). Date - Saturday May 4, 2019 Time - 2.00pm -3.30pm Cost - $25 + a small item for a baby bundle Space is limited so bookings are essential To book or for more information please phone Home Hill 6424 8055 or email [email protected]

15.01.2022 Our twilight market and car boot sale is shaping up to be a special afternoon! There will be lots of stalls and car boots to browse for that special bargain, delicious food, great coffee and even fantastic voices to keep you entertained - all in the lovely grounds of Home Hill - surely there cant be a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Hope to see you there! SATURDAY 18th JANUARY 3:30-7:30pm

15.01.2022 Selected Heritage Property Closures due to Coronavirus Pandemic The National Trust Tasmania is temporarily closing the following sites due to the Covid-19: Clarendon House, Australian Fly Fishing Museum, Franklin House, Home Hill, Latrobe Courthouse Museum, Launceston Synagogue, Mt Lyell Mine Managers Offices, Oak Lodge, Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site and Runnymede. The Old Umbrella Shop in Launceston will remain open to the public and Penghana in Queenstown will continu...e to operate as a Bed and Breakfast. Contact with the National Trust Tasmania management team can be made through the Old Umbrella Shop or online. The National Trust has also decided to cancel the 2020 Heritage Festival and will postpone the Tasmanian Heritage Tourism Conference to a later date. The greatest concern of the National Trust Tasmania during these difficult times is the welfare of visitors, valued members, volunteers and the wider community. Throughout the period when sites are closed to the public, the National Trust will continue to carry out basic maintenance works and funding permitting, some major restoration works. The National Trust Tasmania will be developing a range of volunteer programs and activities that existing and new volunteers and members can do from the comfort of their own homes. The National Trust thanks the community for its understanding of the need to make these decisions and thanks our colleagues in the heritage sector for their support. The ongoing contribution and support from the community is much appreciated and more important than ever. This position is under constant review and updates will be provided accordingly.

11.01.2022 Perhaps Valentine's Day is a time when we should reflect on lasting and positive relationships, and one great example of that is the partnership of Joe and Enid Lyons. Their relationship is said to have been a partnership in every sense of the word, in marriage and in politics. Each of them regularly paid tribute to the other and the wise counsel they offered. Joe, when reflecting on his time as Tasmanian Premier, stated: ‘Many decisions that have come from me have come only ...after consultation with her’, and from Enid: ‘We leaned upon each other in an equality of partnership in marriage rarely achieved, even though we shared no common background.’ She went on to say ‘When our views coincided it was, as often as not, the result of long discussion. When they differed, we were content to argue good-humouredly for years.’ Home Hill, their much loved family home and its contents, serves as a tangible reminder of this important political and personal relationship. We are very lucky to have this extraordinary reminder of not just a great love story but arguably the most significant married couple in Australia’s political history.

10.01.2022 Book September 14 in your calendar - come and see us at Home Hills Car Boot Sale! So many great things to buy - or, if you like, sell! Call today to book a car spot!

09.01.2022 A huge thank you to everyone who came along for our Easter Egg Hunt this year - we had a lot of fun and hope you did too! Enormous thanks to all Home Hills volunteers, because without them this couldnt happen, and a giant shout out to the team from Paisley Park for joining in the fun! We would also like to thank IGA Xpress, Woolworths Devonport and Devonport Kmart for your support - Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much (Helen Keller). One last extra spe...cial thank you to the young man who thought he had collected too many eggs and wanted to share them with children who might not have found as many - what a great example for all of us! See you all next year!

08.01.2022 Joe and Enid Lyons visited Australian war-graves in Belgium and northern France on their trip to the UK in 1935. Australian politicians often made these ritual pilgrimages, but for Joe this was an important personal journey his itinerary was extensive and included sites such as Passchendaele, Ypres, Menin, Armentieres, Fromelles, Arras, Amiens, Pozieres and Villers-Bretonneux. Referring to that visit, Joe said: Today, when the clouds of war loom dark and sinister on the in...ternational horizon, these graves cry eloquently for peace, and no-one who has seen them can fail to abhor every thought of war. He believed that the statesmen of the world should be brought here regularly to ensure that this great tragedy is never repeated. This, he said, would do more than any other means to prevent war. Enid had accompanied him and noted in her diary: All of us deeply moved. I could not control my tears. She was not alone even the men were reduced to weeping, for both husband and wife had been overcome with emotion as they walked through the cemeteries. The image attached is Joe at the Australian war cemetery at Villers-Bretonneux. Joe died in April 1939, 5 months before Australia entered WWII.

08.01.2022 It’s on again - in less than a week we hold our Annual Garden Fete and because of the amazing turn-out last year, this year we have doubled down on everything - more stalls, more food, more coffee, more music, more fun! This is our biggest event of the year and we can't wait! Book it in your diaries - Sunday November 17, 10am-3pm!

08.01.2022 The 4th annual Home Hill Garden Fete.

07.01.2022 We would like to thank everyone who came to our second annual Joe and Enid Lyons Address in the Parliamentary Reception Room, Parliament House, Hobart last night - a very fitting venue and another full house! Our speaker this year, Tasmanian Premier, The Hon. Will Hodgman presented an interesting and engaging address on the importance of Joe and Enid in Australias political history, and also gave us some insight into living life in the public eye. It was wonderful to see so many people there, and particularly special to have a number of Lyons family members join us. Huge thanks go to Anne Henderson, Mary Pridmore and Peter Lyons for all their work in bringing this years lecture together and helping to promote the legacy of two extraordinary Tasmanians.

06.01.2022 Home Hill is closed for winter but we are making the most of this time to get the house spick and span and ready for reopening on September 1. We are also planning a full program of events for the next few months starting off with our Car Boot Sale on Saturday September 14 - this is a great chance to clear out some unwanted bits and pieces or, if your not looking to sell, come along and grab a bargain - you just never know what you might find!

05.01.2022 Very sad news today.
