24.01.2022 And the Home Instead Senior Care Wollongong CAREGiver of the Year 2020 is...

21.01.2022 World Diabetes Day 14th November 2020 One of our clients June has been living with diabetes for 35 years. I had a chat recently with her daughter Maree about how diabetes has impacted her mother’s life: My mother June was and always has been incredibly independent she is someone you would aspire to be like. When my father Michael passed away 35 years ago, mum was diagnosed with diabetes 12 months later. That never stopped her from managing her diagnosis herself and keepi...ng the house exactly the same way dad would- she organised all our holidays and paid all the bills. She was always really good at coping with everything on her own, but over the years it’s gotten much harder since she was diagnosed with dementia. After bingo every week Mum would stop at Aldi on the way home and buy all the sweets she could find. "She forgets she can’t eat them because she has diabetes, and her sugar levels would be too high. Every day she would say ‘no take them away I won’t eat anymore’ but then she would just forget and do the same thing all over again! She thinks she can be clever and would eat so many and hide the original packaging. She would hide them underneath her pyjamas, under a blanket in the garage sometimes we couldn’t even find them! Always a new hiding spot. Eventually she had to put on insulin because she would not stop eating sugary treats! "We live day to day at the moment worried about how high or low her sugar levels might be. Diet and medication can be the most important things for someone with diabetes. It can be really stressful always timing when she can eat and checking her levels, but we are so happy with how her body has been coping over the years with changes to medications and new routines. She is 91 after all! Mum’s CAREGivers are so helpful with her health, she responds to them really well and they are so supportive. We are very lucky to have them - Maree

20.01.2022 Hi Everyone! Preventing falls for older people who live at home is important for both physical and mental wellbeing. To help you create a safe home environment that supports you as you age, we have created a room-by-room checklist for seniors who want to prevent falls at home.... Even if you think you’re not at risk of a fall, it is something to be conscious of. That is because around 1 in 3 adults over 65 experience at least 1 fall per year. That’s a third of older Australians.

20.01.2022 Huge thanks to all our CAREGivers who share precious moments and listen to precious memories with our seniors. We appreciate you! https://loom.ly/YbVdtsA

10.01.2022 We had 6 Caregivers who completed the training and all were deemed competent A lot of fun and laughter was had by all as they practiced on each other We had a right of refusal when Barb didn’t want to have her eyedrops applied Ros didn’t quote know what to do!! This is great practice if our Clients refuse to take their meds!! As the Scouts say - Be prepared Did you know it is quite difficult to get a Band-Aid off someone’s arm with gloves on!! ... Also our new Caregivers Lucy and Leeanne made great inroads in their training modules. Leeanne had a few mentally draining services but came in for over 4 hours and completed quite a few modules. 4 hours with Leeanne is very unique!! Well Done

08.01.2022 Remembrance Day At 11 o’clock on 11 November 1918, fighting in the First World War came to a formal close with the signing of an Armistice. This day now known as Remembrance Day is now a day to commemorate the sacrifices of war and to remember those who have served or are currently serving. All Australians are encouraged to remember these men and women by observing one minute's silence at 11 am on the 11th of November for Remembrance Day. By observing one minute's silence we... pay tribute to the men and women who have served and are still serving in our defence forces and remember those who have died or suffered in conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. Lest we forget.
