A recent paper by researchers at the University of Sydney suggests the longstanding notion of middle class as referring to workers on the middle rungs of a hierarchy of earnings is increasingly untenable.... In the public imagination those made homeless by "natural disaster' are viewed as innocent victims and the innocent victims of capitalist economics, domestic violence and other systemic causes are viewed as welfare bludgers' that don't care about themselves or the community. This is a false dichotomy that works to stigmatize and disparage mob who are rarely, if ever, heard or are given the right of reply. This double standard shows us the power of the mainstream capitalist media in framing the good guys and bad guys. The good guys are offered the hand of assistance and the bad guys are at best viewed with suspicion and at worst treated like criminals. This is egalitarian Australia.

14.01.2022 We have an obligation to our comrades that are in their cars, on the street, in dangerous bed bug ridden crisis accommodation and in rooming houses and caravan parks where they are being exploited or in overcrowded properties where they are being stood over by unscrupulous capitalist fucking slumlords who are intimidating them into submission and silence as they have no support. It is fucking time that homelessness is seriously, deliberately and transparently examined in this... state. The minister responsible for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is Richard Wynne and they are looking for community insights into the changing scale and nature of homelessness in Victoria, the many social, economic and policy factors that impact on homelessness and the policies and practices for delivering services to the homeless. Is there any interest in working together to make a submission? I know that among us there is a deep reservoir of knowledge in areas that are critical to educating and informing these middle class bureaucrats. We need to act to ensure that the human rights, health and living conditions of those who are experiencing immense suffering does not continue. So the HPU Victoria is asking for your help and support. 13.01.2022 Restrictions on recreational and other boating are soon to be lifted in Queensland and Western Australia. Continuing our theme of forms of protest that can be u...sed in a time of physical distancing we now turn to displaying banners, slogans and flags on water. Boat based actions were a regular feature of environmental, peace and anti-nuclear protest during the 1980s and 1990s. Canoes and other vessels were used as part of the Franklin Dam blockade and numerous actions were held which aimed to blockade visits by US and other warships as well as the prevent the loading of uranium exports from Australia and the delivery of timber looted from overseas rainforests. More recently water based actions have focused on coal exports, refugee rights and West Papuan freedom struggles. Banners, flags and other means of messaging have often been a key feature of such actions, whether they involved physical obstruction or not. The first photo, taken from the National Museum of Australia's Benny Zable collection, shows a barge set up to resemble a coffin taking part in a 1986 protest against the 75th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Navy, which included nuclear capable ships from other countries. The second is from the Freedom Flotilla protest. An initiative of Australian and West Papuan Indigenous elders, it traveled around both countries in 2013 to highlight and show solidarity with community struggles against colonialism. 10.01.2022 The current community housing minister has no fucking idea, he wants to put a 'positive spin' on the suffering of thousands !!! This cretin has said that We have 99.5% of our Australians homed and living in safe places. There’s half a per cent of the population that isn’t. We want to make sure that that 0.5% are in homes as quickly as possible and we’re doing what we can to go out there and talk to people in the sector and find out how we do it. "I want to put a positive spin on it as well and not just say Australia’s in a housing crisis when it affects a very, very small percentage of the population. If a debilitating disease is destroying the lives of .5% of the population is it not a health crisis? SAFE, AFFORDABLE HOUSING ENDS HOMELESSNESS, NOT THE MISERY OF CRISIS ACCOMMODATION !!!

It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of a camera and contradict the bourgeois messages that have fed the offensive community views of the homeless. The Australia the community blames the victim for their situation. The government also blames the victim and refuses to take meaningful action so thousands of the most vulnerable bear the economic, emotional and physical costs of putting investors and developers first. Filling... the 60,000 odd empty properties (three for every homeless person) with homeless people would alleviate a tonne of suffering and save the state government money in hospitals, cells and allied health services, but it chooses not to. I can tell you that for people who are street homeless the pandemic and the emergency powers has meant the complete renegotiation of their lives.
