19.01.2022 Home Grown Vegetables With the colder weather moving in fast and the social distancing and isolation rules in play, what better time to focus on the garden. We at Home Pool and Garden have been hard at work in our own veggie patch. There's plenty here for the dinner table. @windermerethroughtheglass
19.01.2022 GREEN POOL RAIN EVENT - UPDATE After the recent rain event that turn all outdoor pools in Melbourne a grey green colour. I thought I would share the clean up progress of my own pool. After discovering the olive green mess I once proudly called a pool, I simply added 2.4 litres of liquid chlorine distributed evenly around the pool. ... I then turned the filter system onto manual, increased the chlorine output of my chlorinator, increased the pump speed to high, and left it running 24/7. I made sure all of the baskets were totally clean and clear of debris and I added 2 capfuls of Rock Alum (Aluminium Sulphate) to the skimmer basket and allowed it to slowly dissolve over time. Rock Alum comes in a pebble form so it can sit in the skimmer basket while it dissolves. Over the coarse of the day I backwashed the filter only once as a precaution and not because it needed it. Then this morning, 24 hours later I awake to the water being crystal clear and all of the dust and debris resting on the floor of the pool ready to be vacuumed to waste.
13.01.2022 Don't forget to register your pool and or spa!!!!! With June 1st 2020 fast approaching there is very little time left to get your pool registered. Go to your council website and search for the pool and spa registration section. ... Fill out the form and make a payment of about $80 depending on your council. This fee covers the pool registration fee of $31.84 + GST and a permit search fee making up the balance. Failure to register your pool or spa by the 1st of June will incur a $330.00 fine. Once registered you will need to employ a registered pool inspector. Your council should be able to provide you with a list of names. Make sure the person you choose is registered and can actually issue a certificate of compliance. There are some enterprises who will issue you a report on the your pool for a fee, but are not able to give you a certificate of compliance. A registered inspector will issue the same report for a fee and give you time to make good any repairs or alterations. They will then return to check that all repairs and alterations meet the requirements of initial inspection. If you comply the inspector will then issue the certificate of compliance. Once you have the certificate of compliance, you need to give a copy of this to your council who will charge you another $20 to lodge the certificate. So don't forget to register your pool and or spa by the 1st June 2020
08.01.2022 Correct Water Balance is imperative to having a healthy pool.
07.01.2022 Pool Fence Improvement A valued customer recently had their first pool inspection and the only issue with the existing pool fence was the gap below the panels. The gap was greater than 100mm in sections and therefore failed to comply with the new regulations. We at HP&G were asked to solve this issue by installing an extra rail below each panel. Our customer is ecstatic with the result and we think the solution looks pretty awesome. Check out the photos. We also removed the old lift latch and installed a new state of the art magnetic latch to the gate.

05.01.2022 GREEN POOL RAIN EVENT - THE FALLOUT Now that many pools are beginning to look like they are back to normal, it is usually far from reality. The use of a Flocculant will have dramatically lowered the Alkalinity and pH level of the pool water. The chemical reaction of the Flocculant with the Alkalinity and the pH is what makes the particulates drop to the floor. ... The vacuum to waist which has removed 90% of the particulates from the pool, has also removed a great deal of water which had salt, calcium and stabiliser dissolved within it, all of which are needed to help keep the pool healthy. The water will also have Phosphate levels that if untreated can restart the algae bloom. Therefore you must have the water analysed properly and adjust all of the chemistry levels of your pool accordingly. Make sure when you are adding salt, you only add the correct amount required to bring the levels up to what your chlorinator requires. If the salt remains low the chlorinator will not generate enough chlorine to keep the pool healthy. Over salting the pool will in many cases overdrive the chlorinator which in turn can damage the salt cell. Of course the newer models of chlorinators will restrict or even stop the chlorine production if the salt level is too high. Learn your pool chemistry, your pool will thank you. 03.01.2022 GREEN POOL RAIN EVENT Melbourne has woken this morning to every outdoor pool having a green/brown cloudy colour. This event is due to a massive dust storm mixed with constant rain over night following the recent bush fires. You need to be careful how you handle this issue as not every pool can use some of the suggested chemicals or procedures being advise on the radio stations. ... The first thing you need to do is add some extra chlorine to combat the algae bloom feeding on the dust particles. Super-chlorination is simply a double daily dose of chlorine. Liquid is the best to use, especially in a salt pool. If you have a sand or media filter you can use a flocculant to help precipitate the particles to the bottom of the pool. Read and follow the instructions on the chemical packaging carefully. Only when you can see the floor of the pool can you vacuum to waste removing most of the foreign matter totally from the pool. Those of you with a cartridge filter MUST NOT use flocculant, as this will block up the filter elements reducing their working life considerably. Turn off your robot cleaners and your in-floor cleaners as they will only stir up the sediment making it a longer process to clean the pool. Once the pool is clear again the water must be tested and fully rebalanced before allowing any chemical equipment to operate and take back control. Please be patient as this is not going to be a quick fix. Regards Home Pool and Garden
