24.01.2022 CANDY STRIPE... The beautiful Candy Stripe capsicum is very similar to Candy Cane... the one difference being that this one maintains it’s stripes much further into the ripening process, resulting in a wonderful tri-colour. So festive!
23.01.2022 NIGHTLIFE... Ever woken up in the morning to find your seedlings totally decimated? Going out at night to check your babies can help you prevent incidents like this, which are much more common than you’d think. I’d love to thank Fran Jackson from www.xfactorphotography.com.au or https://m.facebook.com/Xfactor-Photography-1827096007392987/ for permission to share this incredible pic.
23.01.2022 GARLIC 2020 - ITALIAN PURPLE A year for record sizes for us! I’ve only ever seen irrigated crops this size. Because our garlic only gets watered when it rains, it has an intense flavour and usually smaller bulbs. Can’t wait for this lot to dry so I can braid them!
21.01.2022 CORNSILK... We've harvested some more corn today, but nothing goes to waste! Did you know cornsilk has medicinal properties? We certainly do... this batch will be dried and stored to make cornsilk tea should the need arise #homesteadhealthaustralia #organic #cornsilk #medicinal #growyourown #margaretriver #zerowaste
21.01.2022 SEED SAVING... Yes, it's that time of year! The incredible harvest and the busy business of seed saving. With all the craziness in the world right now, what better feeling than to know that you have guaranteed food security. Also the best time to buy your seeds in preparation for next spring... hot off the press, two old favourites and two stunning newcomers to the collection!
21.01.2022 CP288 CHILLI (VARIANT) This beautiful chilli began as experimentation by Christopher Philips in his ongoing efforts to create hotter and hotter chillies, and these are the first to ripen for the year. This particular variant comes with an interesting story... the original is a dark chocolate colour, but one plant decided to grow caramel coloured pods. My plant was grown from those seeds. The result, not caramel, but certainly not dark chocolate either. I love the colour, as it's quite different to any other variety I have. So what will you get when you grow our seeds? We're not entirely sure, but it will be crazy hot, gnarly looking, super-waxy chilli... somewhere in the colour range of caramel, through red, into dark chocolate... be sure to let us know https://www.homesteadhealthaustralia.com//pro/show/8027215
20.01.2022 7-POT BUBBLEGUM YELLOW CHILLI How cool are these?! I love that the colour of these bleeds up the calyx and into the stem. They come in a few colours, but these yellow ones have been the first to ripen. White, peach and red are also on the way... They are generally between 350,000-500,000SHU, which is not as hot as some that I've got, but more than enough heat for most of us mere mortals, and with a nice citrus flavour, it's perfect for chicken, fish or seafood dishes, or eve...n to give your sorbet a bit of a kick! #homesteadhealthaustralia #chilli #chilliseeds #seedsaver #seedbank #growyourown #7potbubblegumyellow #bubblegumyellow #organic #superhot #margaretriver
19.01.2022 KAOS CHILLI... This may be one of the rarest chillies I grow... a google search will come up with nothing and unlike most chillies, there's not even one that's similar with another name. Unique & beautiful. Although I can't find any information on it's heat rating... this one will cause your gut some serious chaos, I assure you! This is the first to ripen, so seeds are still a few weeks off... consider this a preview #homesteadhealthaustralia #chilliseeds #organic #chilli #seedbank #seedsaver #rare #kaos #growyourown #selfsufficient #margaretriver
19.01.2022 TOMATOES... The tomatoes are now filling out their cages, and I'm spending my mornings fruit spotting! Here's some of our little babies, with a tonne of new varieties this season, some of which I haven't even seen yet, I'm chomping at the bit for them to grow & ripen. All our plants are so robust this year... everyone who has bought our excess plants, or been here to see the crop, has been as stunned as us at how lush, green & perfect they are! Absolutely our best crop yet!
18.01.2022 JAPONICA STRIPED... Seriously rare here in Australia, can't believe I got my hands on some! Only 3 seeds germinated, resulting in just 2 partially fertilised cobs. Certainly enough to increase on for next year though
18.01.2022 HERBAL HAPPINESS... For flavour or medicine, you can’t go past your own garden bed
17.01.2022 SUGAR RUSH CREAM CHILLI... Can't believe how many chillies this one produces! It's comparatively mild in heat, with a beautiful almost melon-scented aroma. I'll be using this one heaps! Definitely a new favourite! Get your seeds here... https://www.homesteadhealthaustralia.com//pro/show/8091503... #homesteadhealthaustralia #organic #seedsaver #seedbank #chilli #sugarrushcream #chilliseeds #growyourown #selfsufficient #margaretriver
17.01.2022 CHEIRO ROXA CHILLI How beautiful these are! Even if you're not a chilli fan, the plant, covered in masses of tiny purple and pink baubles are a fantastic talking piece. Having said that, they taste great too! Seeds available in the next few days https://www.homesteadhealthaustralia.com//pro/show/8089791... #homesteadhealthaustralia #chilli #cheiroroxa #prettyinpink #organic #growyourown #seedsaver #seedbank #selfsufficient #margaretriver
17.01.2022 PRESERVING... Over the past few years, I’ve focused mainly on dehydrating for preserving our harvest, it’s cheap, simple and effective! For many years I wanted to do preserving in jars, but knew I needed to do a lot more research before I could get started. With so many methods, different brands and style of jars, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Admittedly, it was a bad year to start anything new! Trying to find any preserving items was near impossible with shortages world...wide. On the other hand, I learned an important lesson from my fellow preservers that weren’t able to source any of the single-use lids needed for their extensive jar collections... minimise your disposables! Years of research led me to WECK jars (or wrecked jars as Paul likes to call them). They are thick glass, with glass lids and rubber seals, which have been known to withstand numerous uses. They’re German made, and although a little on the pricey side, will more than pay for themselves in the long term. Despite most companies being completely sold out, I managed to get my hands on a batch and simply can’t wait to get started! Anyone else do their own preserving? Have you had any challenges this year? What system do you use and are you happy with it? #weck #weckjars #preserving #pressurecanning #backtobasics #madeingermany #quality #notinlids
17.01.2022 GARLIC... First braid for the year has hit the stairwell!

17.01.2022 MERRY CHRISTMAS... There’s no denying that 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for most. Paul & I would like to thank all of you who have brought us joy & happiness, either personally or professionally... as without you, this year could have been incredibly bleak. Now, more than ever, we wish you the best of health, a day of celebration with friends and family, and peace for the upcoming year. Merry Christmas... and thank you Paul & Ellen Marshall.

15.01.2022 HUNG OUT TO DRY Such pretty colours, and no continuity at all. I thought I'd keep track of which cob and what colour kernel each plant came from, but even cobs on the same plant were vastly different. We've still got more to harvest, but I'm so happy with the colours... Now time to dry... then we'll be grinding our very own cornflour #homesteadhealthaustralia #organic #glassgemcorn #hungouttodry #seedbank #growyourown #seedsaver #pretty #colouredcorn #cornflour #glutenfree #margaretriver
15.01.2022 NEW RELEASE TOMATOES... A quick preview of these two stunning new tomato varieties... Dancing with Smurfs & Beautiful Dreamer. The first of the season to ripen. 14.01.2022 RAIN DOWN Good for the garden, great for the tank... bring it on! #homesteadhealthaustralia #rain #raindown #margaretriver
13.01.2022 ORGONITE... If you're into orgonite, or if you are interested to find out about it, this is the place to go for amazing quality local products. Check it out and definitely give this page a like! I highly recommend Amanda and all her incredibly beautiful products... https://www.facebook.com/Orgone-Happy-101126278357878
12.01.2022 LOOFAH... So excited! My first and only loofah! At least I'll have sponges if the supermarkets run out! I'm not sure what the usual size is for these, but I think this one is on the larger side. Either way, I'm pretty happy!
11.01.2022 MARCONI RED CAPSICUM What a beautiful harvest! We over-wintered our Marconi's, so this year we're harvesting months earlier, and I even suspect we'll get 2 harvests. The colour of these is so rich and dark and they're incredibly sweet and full-flavoured. We love other colours too, but for cooking up a good old fashioned pasta sauce or lasagne, you can't do better! Get your seeds here... https://www.homesteadhealthaustralia.com//pro/show/7867699... #homesteadhealthaustralia #organic #growyourown #seedsaver #seedbank #marconired #capsicum #harvest #selfsufficient #margaretriver
11.01.2022 TOOLS OF THE TRADE... Got my canning funnels today. Having the right tools can mean the difference between doing a job easily and effectively, and making a flat out mess! Worth the few dollars I say Who else has tools that they wouldn’t want to be without? Please share
11.01.2022 #GROWYOUROWN #SEEDSAVERS We're often asked if we sell our produce. And that sounds like a really simple question... so the "simple" answer is no... but why? We put insane effort into growing all our fruit & vegetables. We don't have endless water supplies, irrigation systems, and masses of money to pump into a commercial operation. Our entire operation is a labour of love that has our 100% attention for 9 months of the year EVERY SINGLE DAY! So you go to the supermarket and b...uy chemical laden, low flavour produce for $3.50kg. We come out at the end of those 9 months with perhaps 100kg of beautiful, fresh, chemical free mostly rare or heirloom tomatoes. There's no way we could charge enough to compensate us for the work we do. What we have doesn't come easy, yet people will look at a supermarket tomato and think it's the same. Besides, it was never our intention to become market gardeners. Our intention has always been to encourage people to grow their own food... selling seeds was just the natural extension. To us, our produce has too much value to sell to anyone, as we preserve every last bit to keep us going year round, we can't buy the equivalent anywhere. With my ever increasing list of food allergies and intolerances, at least I know our food is safe for me, because we've watched like a hawk over what's gone into it... we squish bugs by hand, choose only organic manures and other products... and of course we have chlorine & flouride-free water. What most people don't understand is that this kind of produce is never for sale! Because it simply can't be produced on a commercial scale, no-one would pay the end cost. But that doesn't mean it's out of anyone's grasp... you just have to be willing to do it yourself. It takes time and practice, you may have your failures (we sure did... and still do), but with each failure comes the experience to prevent it happening again, and you may even wind up wondering how you put up with commercial food for so long. And think carefully where you get your seeds from. Most commercial seed companies are owned by companies that have their roots (pardon the pun ) in the chemical industry, residues of all kinds remain and taint the final product... some are even genetically modified, and it doesn't have to be labelled. So even if you're not getting your seeds from us (particularly if Kale is your thing ), please take the time to check out some seed swap groups, your local community garden might have some, or even ask on buy & sell in your area. There are so many avid #seedsavers around, find them, then #growyourown and swap the resulting seeds with friends, neighbours & general community. So get your family together, #growyourown & become #seedsavers!
11.01.2022 CHERRY TOMATOES... I've gained a new appreciation for the humble cherry tomato
11.01.2022 WHITE SWEET POTATO PLANTS - $15 If you loved the pics of our stunning purple skinned, white fleshed sweet potatoes last year, here’s your opportunity to grow your own from our very own vigorous stock. These organic, rainwater irrigated plants are fully rooted, well developed and started in massive 9ltr buckets. Only 15 available, so comment or PM to get yours
10.01.2022 THE RESULTS... This morning I wake up to the cutest tiny dried carrots... essentially 3kgs can now be stored away in a small jar and used for soups, casseroles, etc. Will stay shelf stable for years... if they last that long
10.01.2022 ORANGE SCORPION X DEVIL'S TONGUE CHILLI... Gotta love a harvest, particularly such a bright happy colour on this hot, sunny day! Don't ask me how they taste yet, because I need to psych myself up for impending doom! They're gonna be HOT
09.01.2022 PRETTY BUG... Another cute little beetle found on our corn... any ideas as to what this little guy is called? Edit: I have been informed that this is a Paropsisterna debilis... so glad he’s in our garden ... #homesteadhealthaustralia #organic #pesticidefree #paropsisternadenilis #bug #welcomestranger #margaretriver
09.01.2022 Guess what’s on the to do list for today? Can’t wait to get the dehydrator cranked up again
08.01.2022 STUFF IT! - PIMENTO CHILLI Just a quick look at the antipasto section at the deli at your local supermarket and you'll see these guys stuffed with creamed cheese and preserved in oil. They are one of my absolute favourite treats when we have visitors. I hope I get the chance to find out how to make them this year, as we have more than enough of these little balls of spice to make it happen! https://www.homesteadhealthaustralia.com//pro/show/7869948... #homesteadhealthaustralia #chilli #growyourown #organic #seedbank #seedsaver #pimento #ballchilli #cherrychilli #pimentochilli #chilliseeds #antipasto #stuffit
07.01.2022 HAPPINESS IS HOMEMADE... I saw a t-shirt the other day that said happiness is homemade with a jar on it. With COVID-related food shortages we experienced early in the year, I decided that stepping up the amount we grow and preserve was the way to go... now reports of further shortages ahead have just confirmed I had the right idea. When this little beauty showed up today after being on back order, I was pleased as punch! May the canning begin!
07.01.2022 AND THE WINNER IS... Yep, it’s the longhorn for the win! Over 30cm, the longest for the year so far... not bad at all...
07.01.2022 WORK IN PROGRESS... Despite the millions of shades of green, rather than red, orange, peach, chocolate and the like... I love watching our chillies develop! The interesting shapes, some of which are firsts for us this year, are so exciting to see. All the plants are so lush and healthy, so once our pods are ripe and seeds harvested, they'll be absolute rippers! We're also selling some excess plants in the next few days, so be sure to hook up to my "Ellen's Garden" profile (see previous post) to stay in the loop for that. Seeds available soon
07.01.2022 GLASS GEM CORN... Now the wait until we can afford a good quality genuine stone grinder... until then I'll continue breaking the rest of the kernels off the remaining cobs. Should have a full jar by the end of it, which will probably make half a jar of precious organic home-grown cornflour. Of course my favourite, most perfectly developed cobs have been put aside as seed for next years crop. #homesteadhealthaustralia #glassgemcorn #organic #growyourown #seedsaver #stonegroundcornflour #glutenfree #selfsufficient #seedbank #margaretriver
05.01.2022 LOVE IT? OR HATE IT? Great harvest of coriander, I absolutely love it... how about you?
05.01.2022 CHILLIES... It's going to be HOT this autumn... super-hits are cranking
04.01.2022 MY NEW PROFILE... While Homestead Health has over 4500 likes, it rarely comes up on Facebook searches, and our posts are sometimes only reaching 300 people. In addition, we are selling a lot more plants locally on buy & sell groups and through word of mouth. So to make this easier, I have created a "personal" profile for this specific purpose. If anyone would like to "friend" me on this profile and have more access to local information, please feel free. https://www.facebook.com/100045832665134/posts/107258507478571/?d=n
