22.01.2022 UPS - The Uninterruptible Power Supply - You seriously need to be running your home office off of a UPS. Large companies spend millions of dollars for the peace of mind of a backup power supply solution. At some stage you will suffer either a power blackout or power brownout (undervoltage) or an overvoltage. For the expense of a few hundred dollars you can protect the devices on your home network against these abnormal power events, each of which has the ability to either blo...w the power supply or to corrupt data in your home computer, network switch/router or external storage devices. Imagine all the hours you'ver just spent working on spreadsheet, letter or a presentation and you lose it !! Database applications are particularly at risk ... Imagine your MYOB database gone forever. Even worse if you're not backing up your data.... but then a backup can only be used to restore you to the point when you actually last took a backup... all data since will need to be manually recreated. A UPS is well worth the investment !! See more

15.01.2022 Extended Warranty - I usually get the feeling I’m being blackmailed for peace of mind when I've bought myself a new DVD player, TV, printer, camera or computer etc in the past. These days you may be paying for rights which you already have. This article on the SMH website raises awareness of this issue. It’s not exactly a detailed article but gives you some food for thought if you are about to make a purchase. Well worth a read though!

04.01.2022 USB - Still room for improvement... And its on its way.

01.01.2022 DVD Region Codes - I got a call from a customer the other day asking if I knew how to remove region locking on his LGBD550 Blue Ray DVD player. After some extensive research it seems that the menu unlocking hacks that are prevalent for most DVD and BR players is not available for this particular player. The only evidence i've seen of a hack is a hardware upgrade which when installed requires careful attention when applying future firmware upgrades. (I've attached an article (following) which describes this in a bit of detail)... Perhaps the workaround is to use software to make a backup of the Blu-Ray disc - which will then potentially remove region coding - and then playback either off of USB, harddrive or a new disk. I'd be interested to hear of your experiences with this problem.
