24.01.2022 Suzie Lavoie is a Senior Research Fellow at Orygen, National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, The University of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. She shares how Homeward Bound has impacted her: "Before Homeward Bound, I believed that I had reached the senior level as a researcher because of luck, because I was at the right place at the right moment. Homeward Bound, and all the introspection work that I have done, made me realise that this is part of a story that I have been telling myself for a very long time. The truth is that I am where I am and who I am because of my personality, skills and hard work. I was born with some privileges, and I do recognise this, but my success has nothing to do with luck."

24.01.2022 In celebration of National Science Week, Geologist and HB1 alumna Marianne Harvey shares her wonderful creation The Wombats of Wollombi. Check out the first episode of the series here: https://bit.ly/3iOCJhb Marianne shares the inspiration behind her creation and the meaning of The Wombats of Wollombi: "It took until losing my job working as a geologist when coronavirus hit for me to finally put pen to paper. To use wombats to tell my stories became a no-brainer for me aft...er my dad died in 2017 - they were his favourite animal and, of course, live underground where all geologists live, in a virtual sense. My dad was one of my biggest fans while I was fund-raising for HB16, to the point of embarrassment at times but his relentless enthusiasm taught me its ok to be proud of my achievements. My purpose is to educate and entertain. I want everyone to enjoy the stories the rocks have to tell. They cant speak for themselves, so we have to interpret for them. They tell us about natural process the Earth has undergone way, way before humans ever touched it. But why is knowing about these processes so important? So we can learn to interfere less. No other species on Earth has left an unnatural footprint behind like we will from the artificial world we have created."

20.01.2022 Vale Lynn Pearce. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lynn Pearce, who died after a long illness with lung cancer. Lynn was a respected and highly-regarded member of Homeward Bounds coaching community, providing invaluable support to participants from the HB3 and HB5 cohorts. Those who were fortunate enough to have worked with her have described her as a caring and insightful mentor, with a wonderful intent for others and the ability to inspire them to ...reach their potential. An accomplished management consultant across Australia and the UK, Lynn generously volunteered her time to a number of organisations. In addition to Homeward Bound, Lynn supported the work of World Vision and her much-loved Mavericks Dragon Boat Club in Sydney. 16.01.2022 HB4 alumnae Tammy Eger and Kirsten Muller have written a chapter Breaking the Ice: Reflections on Our Leadership Expedition to Antarctica With 99 Women in STEMM for the publication Critical Reflections and Politics on Advancing Women in the Academy. The chapter includes 14 lessons/reflections on the Antarctic portion of the trip. We particularly loved #14: 14. Take the Leap of Faith with Friends: On our last landing we prepared for a polar plunge. Polar Plunge in Antar...ctic waters requires support. We had a rescue team in drysuits at the ready, the expedition doctor on shore and dry clothing ready to change into. What made the moment incredibly impactful was seeing groups of 10-15 women at a time hand in hand running with joy and diving head first into the Antarctica waters. For some it was a bucket list moment, for other it was a spiritual experience. In many ways it was our awakening to the world we would emerge from the journey to face together. No one women alone, stronger together, invigorated, and supported. More information on the publication, including a webinar and purchase discount, can be found here: https://bit.ly/2LXHGpO

This was so ...important during the following months as we battled some of the worst bushfires ever seen in Australia. I used the new skills I honed on the ship to focus on strategy, stay resilient, raise awareness through the media, and help raise emergency funds at Zoos Victoria for wildlife affected by the fires. I had my Homeward Bound network behind me who also helped raise awareness, funds, and sent much-needed support as I worked to conserve and protect our native animals.
