22.01.2022 The following article is from WEBSITE: https://www.ruralaid.org.au/donate/?supporter_id=14254 DONATE Hive Aid Drought Relief... Australias professional beekeepers are our forgotten farmers. These important primary producers are often overlooked when it comes to the effects of drought, bushfire and other natural disasters. Yet professional beekeepers are the cornerstone of our agricultural industry. They play a vital role in helping to pollinate important food crops for both humans and livestock, in addition to producing delicious Aussie honey from our rugged bushland. Crops like almonds, avocados, blueberries, cucumbers, mangoes, apples and pumpkin rely heavily on pollination by bees. Our hardworking Aussie beekeepers are enduring one of the toughest seasons on record thanks to relentless drought and damaging bushfires, with conditions feared to only become worse in coming months. A scarcity of water and flowering trees mean honey production has fallen sharply, bee populations have suffered, and many honey bees are currently neither producing honey nor pollinating crops. This impact will be felt for many years to come due to a loss of bushland and forests that are relied on to support healthy bee colonies. We need to support our littlest livestock, honey bees, and the beekeepers who care for them. Please help safeguard one of the most important industries in Australian agriculture Australian apiculture. Funds raised through the Hive Aid campaign will be used to provide financial assistance to professional beekeepers who register with us for support. . If you are a beekeeper registered as a primary producer and require immediate drought and/or bushfire assistance, please register here. Thanks for your interest in supporting rural Australia. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. If you wish to make a direct deposit or cheque payment please click here to read more. To donate to purchase hay for farmers or domestic drinking water, please visit: https://www.ruralaid.org.au/donate/?supporter_id=14254 Funds raised by Rural Aid support our counselling program and other Rural Aid initiatives.

19.01.2022 Fantastic news for Minnesota!

18.01.2022 SPRING MANAGEMENT As we enter the spring season there are a few jobs that need attention in the Apiary. Remember spring is one of the most important times of the year in the Apiary. If you want to have healthy strong colonies, spring is the time to start work. To Do List: 1) Check the health of your hives, in particular check for AFB. 2) Check to see if you have a Queen by finding her or evidence she is laying eggs.... 3) Consider replacing your old or failing Queens (more than 2 years old) 4) Check to see if there is honey (food) for your bees. More hives are lost to starvation at this time than any other reason. 5) Consider if, and when, you need to rob them as part of your swarm management. 6) Look for signs of swarming.ie Queen cells mostly along the lower parts of the frames. 7) Make space for your bees to allow the colony to grow. Consider raising brood to the super or adding supers. 8) Replace beetle traps if required 9) Remove and replace old frames 10) Check hive condition and replace boxes if required. 11) Check stability and safety of hive stands. Information is of a general nature, and may or may not apply to your own situation. Taken from Sept Bee Flight magazine, Ipswich & West Moreton Beekeepers Assn Inc. www.honey.org.au

16.01.2022 Media Release AUSTRALIAN HONEYBEE INDUSTRY COUNCIL 28 January 2020 Times up for bees Continued and expanded access to public lands was identified in June as the number one concern across Australia by professional beekeepers and there is no more time for decision makers to delay. Peter McDonald, Chair of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) said, The bee industry, like so many others, has been devastated by the fires and while Im pretty sure that decision mak...ers know the extent of the damage they dont necessarily understand the implications for our almond and avocado growers - even those that have not been burned out. No bees, means no pollination. Where honey-bees have escaped the blazes, they will starve before Spring unless urgent action by both industry and government is taken to save them, said Peter. Two things need to happen, in order: 1. Hives need sugar syrup and pollen patties. These simulate pollen and can be used in the short-term to keep bees alive. They are expensive and Government subsidies would help. The NSW Department of Primary Industries has already provided a short-term food source of sugar supplements for bees in the affected fire areas. Even with supplements some mortality is expected because of the extended period. Pollen patties contain pollen or a substitute. It should be noted that crops such as almond and avocado will provide pollen for some bees but only for the short period of flowering, not for the rest of the year. 2. Alternative nectar and pollen sources must be found and for this, access to National Park areas that have not been burned is vital. This is not a 12-month panacea, it will be an ongoing requirement for years to come as the natural bush regenerates. Peter said, The AHBIC is seeking urgent action from the Federal Government to coordinate State Government land managers in providing immediate and ongoing access to unburned public land such as National Parks and State Conservation areas over autumn and winter. This is a national problem which threatens food crop production and will also lead to shortages of Australian honey, said Peter. Individuals and corporations can also help struggling beekeepers, sometimes referred to as Australias Forgotten Farmers. Hive Aid is a drought and bushfire relief campaign managed by Rural Aid, one of Australias largest rural charities, Hive Aid contributes financial assistance and practical support to professional beekeepers impacted by the ongoing drought and bushfires and donations can be made at https://www.ruralaid.org.au/donate/?supporter_id=14254 The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) aims to ensure the long term economic viability, security and prosperity of the Australian Honey Bee industry in Australia. 14.01.2022 New Zealand Manuka honey is great! Australia also has over 80 species of tea tree including Manuka honey species. Actually, any honey straight from the hive is naturally anti bacterial and prevents infections. Honey has been used for millions of years for treating wounds.

13.01.2022 It takes one bee working 8-10 hours per day for a month to produce a teaspoon dose of bee pollen. It comes from the pollen that collects on the hind legs of bee...s and is said to consist of almost all of the nutrients needed by humans which makes it one of natures most completely nourishing foods. It is very high in protein and also contains vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, lipids and antioxidants. So, what are the health benefits? The list of possible health benefits to the consumption of bee pollen is rather long; however, it comes with a warning label and a very real risk of anaphylaxis if you have an allergy to pollen. Its use is also unsafe for pregnant women, should not be used by women who are breastfeeding, and can also cause increased bleeding if used with certain blood thinners. Its important to keep in mind that bee pollen should not be confused with natural honey, honey comb and royal jelly. Bee pollen is a complete protein and contains all 22 elements of the human system including: All essential amino acids (bee pollen contains the eight essential amino acids, which the human body cannot produce.) Vitamins A, B Complex series C, D, E, K and Rutin. 28 Minerals, including Trace Minerals needed for good health. Enzymes and Co-Enzymes necessary for good digestion. Hormones such as the ones found in our bodies to affect normal function. Pollen is a natural source of high protein, low in fat, cholesterol free, containing essential fatty acids and a complete range of vitamins and minerals. It is natures growth and maintenance supplement. Bee pollen is the only known food in the world with all essential ingredients necessary to sustain life.

06.01.2022 Did you know? A typical hive in summer has about 60,000 honey bees, including one bee, 250 drones, 20,000 worker bees and 40,000 house bees. One hive can produce up to 100 lb of surplus honey. A worker bee will live for six to eight weeks, foraging for three weeks for pollen, nectar and water. For each pound of honey, a bee can fly the equivalent of twice round the world, making 500 trips to 10,000 flowers within four miles of the hive.... Bees use honey mainly to fuel their wing muscles and feed the hive. Flying at up to 22mph, fuel consumption is 7 million miles per gallon. See more
