23.01.2022 The boys are checking for phorid fly in a recently rescued hive. Phorid fly is a nasty pest that looks similar to the little fruit fly gnats that hang around ripe fruit - only theyre super fast and they can do serious damage to a hive. They are faster than the bees and can swiftly enter a hive and they will lay eggs in open honey pots or in spilt honey. The eggs turn into maggots and eventually they turn the hive into sludge if not well managed. Phorid fly is particularly ba...d at the moment and every time we split, educt/duplicate or rescue a colony, we need to monitor it closely for these pests. The boys are monitoring this hive and they are releasing/killing phorid fly to give it the best chance of survival. 23.01.2022 My latest concoction - fire cider tonic, inspired by @simply_human__ This is a mixture of fresh horse radish, ginger, garlic, chilli, turmeric, onion, home grown limes and lemonades steeped in organic apple cider vinegar. I plan to leave it in a dark place for a month then strain. Well serve the tonic in small amounts with native bee honey. 22.01.2022 This beautiful log colony was recently taken over by pest. Look closely and take note of the tiny, fast moving flies going in and out of the entrance of this log colony. This is phorid fly. This year has been a particularly bad year for phorid fly. These tiny flys look a little like flying fleas and they’re so quick, they can slip past guard bees at the entrance of a colony. Once inside a hive, phorid fly will lay eggs in open honey pots and other areas of the colony. Once ...the eggs hatch they become maggots and consume the colonies food stores, creating a sludgy, disgusting mess. Often this will result in complete loss of a colony. Note: in some cases the colony can be saved by transferring brood without any food stores into a completely new box. This log colony in the video has been a strong colony and has not been touched or tampered with and unfortunately has still been invaded. From speaking with other experienced native bee keepers, this appears to be an unprecedented instance of phorid fly around all of South East Queensland. Colonies that have been opened, split or even set up with eductions can be susceptible to pests ordinarily. In some instances (like this previously healthy log), these pests can invade without any tampering with the hive. Historically we have seen strong colonies of bees fight off phorid fly invasion, however, recently, we’re seeing even the strongest of colonies being over run. Whilst we don’t ordinarily cut colonies out of logs if we can help it, this log colony was cut open and reboxed in an effort to save them. 14.01.2022 At first glance it looks like these girls are doing a super spring clean with the amount of rubbish being brought out of their hive but on closer inspection I actually think theyre self splitting. Some of the product being brought out is clearly debris because its neatly rounded into rubbish balls. The larger, uneven pieces appear to be propolis. If Im correct, these ladies will be taking building materials to a new colony not too far away. 06.01.2022 Sound on: this is the infested log colony which has now been reboxed with only the brood. All food stores have been removed as within these is where most of the phorid fly eggs will have been laid. Whilst this colony has a low population of bees, they are extremely shy and there are quite a few bees hiding in the brood chamber. We have seen the queen which is a good sign but this colony has a long way to go. The phorid fly trap at the bottom of the hive contains a crude mi...xture of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and a teaspoon of native bee honey. I initially only put a tiny amount of honey in the mix but it didn’t attract the fly at all. The added honey mixture seems to be doing the trick and the bees don’t seem to be interested in it thankfully. In the absence of food stores, the fly have laid eggs in broken brood cells. This hive will be monitored closely and nursed to remove fly larvae. It’s unlikely to survive, but it won’t be for the lack of trying . Cant say weve seen this before however we do see exoskeletons of beetles in some of our rescued hives so perhaps by weve managed to save this guy from an unfortunate demise . 04.01.2022 One of our log eduction/hive bud set ups. This one is a TH and was seeded some time ago with a small amount of TH brood. Seeding is when a small amount of brood from another colony is placed into a struggling hive to boost growth. Sometimes the seeded brood will be hatched or consumed with no further effect. Other times, it will spurt the daughter colony into action. In this case, the daughter colony has taken to the seeded brood and has now produced its own queen and contin...ued growing. There’s a reasonable We conduct a mixture of hard/quick splits and eduction/budding methods to duplicate colonies and whilst we’ve had successes with both, we’ve had far more success with the instant splits.
