24.01.2022 What would you give (A) and (B) a health star rating out of 5, based on what you know about food? Ready for the reveal? A) was Organic raw almonds, with 5 out of 5 stars? B)was Weetbix, with also 5 out of 5 stars rating for health? This is my question. ... How are these such different food stuffs considered in the same category; one with a super high nutritional value (as we went over in the last post), the other with very little nutrition, but great marketing and sports endorsments; Both a 5 out of 5 in health status? From this health star rating system, we are being told as consumers that these are two of our healthiest food options that you can purchase (in a package I assume). One is raw, organic almonds with almost endless scientific studies proving health benefits from weight loss to cancer prevention. And the other is Weetbix. Weetbix! I love Weetbix as much as the next guy but really? Wheat that has been processed and had additives added to it. It’s almost like comparing apples to gladwrap. They are both great! But they both do completely different things. I bring this up because this star rating system makes it tricky for everyday Australians to make truly, informed choices when it comes to their own health and that of their family. What do you think?

10.01.2022 How Effective is Your Supplement? By Nutritionist Honor Tremain The other night, ABC’s Four Corners did a program highlighting the amount of money consumers are forking out on supplements in a bid to stay healthy, fix symptoms, improve health or lose weight. It’s around the 4.7 billion dollar mark! But how many of these supplements have been proven to work or are even safe to take? It is all starting to look a bit like snake oil when new supplement companies are popping up a...ll over the place, training the general public with their own courses in order to become sales people for their own products. It used to be you had to study entire diplomas of nutrition or herbs at proper Colleges or University’s for years in order to have this ability! The amount of times I have patients who complain they go to health care practitioners only to find they spent thousands of dollars on pills and elixirs with no benefit to their symptoms is growing, while the amount of times I have now been approached to sell one of these new, pop-up supplement companies products is worrying. What’s worrying is that health care, my own field, is increasingly looking more like a money making venture and less like actual care for your health! For instance: "It certainly seemed logical that taking calcium and vitamin D might strengthen bones, and there were some studies that suggested thatbut for the average Australian, no they've been overhyped and over promoted. Getting your calcium from dairy food is appropriate and getting your vitamin D from the sun is all you need unless you're in special circumstances." Says adjunct associate professor with Monash University's School of Public Health, Dr Ken Harvey of supplementation. And in fact, the list goes on like this for many supplements out there. So instead of grabbing a pill or vitamin too readily, perhaps see what you could alter in your diet, or speak to someone who is qualified in that field to assist you in a more natural, cost effective way. Find more on this on Honor’s Facebook or web page www.honortremain.com.au http://www.abc.net.au//a-closer-look-at-australias/8265840 or see the video talk on The Healthy Tribe https://www.facebook.com/groups/172440433243598/

02.01.2022 The Delightful and Deadly Mushroom As seen in the APN newspapers yesterday: Some people love ‘em. Some people hate them with a passion, like my husband. Some people eat them or use them for fun and they can be delicious but also kill us. They are a fungus and many of us pay good money for them everyday. ... They have exotic names like ‘puffball’, ‘stinkhorn’ and ‘fly agaric’. What are they? They are Mushrooms. Mushrooms have long been viewed as a super healthy food for vegetarians. Why? Because they are packed to the hilt with vitamins and minerals containing the B vitamins in high levels, Vitamin D, unique antioxidants, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and selenium. The rumor that they contain B12 is just that- a rumor unfortunately. The B12 that was found in mushrooms turned out to be from remaining manure particles they had been grown in. Another reason I would not recommend eating them raw and in general, they are much more nutritious lightly cooked.
