16.01.2022 On behalf of the Family, I write this tribute for my Great Uncle Walter Knowles (known as ‘Bob’) 3rd son of Thomas Knowles & Priscilla King (nee Frost). He wa...s born in Melrose SA on 8/4/1884. Walter left home at age 14 to follow his brothers to work in WA. He worked on a dairy farm in Albany before going to the Pilbara region where he was employed as a drover and later managed ‘Wyloo Station’. He was known as an exceptional horse-man. He enlisted with the A.I.F. on 27/2/1915 in Onslow WA and was sent to Blackboy Hill Training Camp Greenmount WA. On June 30th 1915, he embarked at Fremantle on the Kanowna for the Middle East with 7th Reinforcement Group for the 10th Light Horse Regiment (LHR). Operations: Gallipoli with 10th LHR. He was in many locations for which he was ultimately awarded the Military Medal as follows - For exceptional bravery in action. From 4-10th Aug 1916, at HAMISAH, SAGIA and MUSHALFAT. For most gallant conduct and great assistance in the capture of three machine guns, many prisoners, and ammunition, and for bringing in valuable information after penetrating the enemy’s lines on night reconnaissance. Later, he was ‘recommended’ for a 2nd Military Medal for his action at MAGDHABA on 24/12/1916 When the Mounted Charge was in progress a party of the enemy were enfilading and Cpl Knowles perceiving this galloped his gun detachment to a position from which he not only kept down the enemy fire but was the means of effecting their surrender. His work throughout the day was of the highest order (apparently not approved). Also, he has 3 Mentioned in Despatches - recommended by Sir Charles Munro and Sir Archibald James Murray. There are many references to his service with words like bravery, conspicuously good work, and dangerous missions scouting work in the front trenches finding many sniper positions, recorded in his Service Records. He died on 8/6/1960 in Perth and rests in a cemetery in Nedlands WA. Lest we Forget. See more

06.01.2022 Rosemary Sprigs & Poppy Flowers - An Anzac Day Poem ANZAC Day, again is here, Commemorating once a year,... Our Brave, for every war they fought, For Them, we share a grateful thought. Every April, twenty five, Heartfelt thanks, we are alive. Alive to live a life that's free, And filled with opportunity. Soldiers, Diggers, mates for life, As family as a child or wife. A bond that's very rarely broken, Hardships known remain unspoken. Humble treats would raise a grin, ANZAC bickies in a tin. Baked with love and Cockie's Joy, A taste of home to Spirit’s buoy. Rosemary sprigs & Poppy flowers, Symbolic gestures at pre-dawn hours. Aussies & Kiwis join together, Uniting like birds of a feather. At cenotaphs, wreaths we lay, Lump in throat, as we pray. Army troops stand at attention, Witnessing our flag’s ascension. Khakis & slouch hats worn so proudly, Trumpeter plays The Last Post loudly. Hand on brow in salutation, Brave defenders of our Nation. ANZAC Day, full of tradition, Marches & sports competition, Coin toss two-up, place a bet, Lest We Forget, Lest We Forget. ANZAC Day, again is here, Commemorating once a year, Our Brave, for every war they fought, For Them, we share a grateful thought. ~ Vicki Hadfield 25th April, 2016 Hugs, Health & Happiness to You & Your Loved Ones, Enjoy your ANZAC Day, Vicki Vicki Hadfield #ANZACday2017 #ANZACday #LestWeForget #Poetry #AnzacDayPoem #Poem
