24.01.2022 Incredibly heart wrenching to watch. There is so much work to be done worldwide for ground/beach-nesting birds. This video shows the amazing resilience of the birds and of Ailsa to help them, she reminds me of so many of our wonderfully dedicated volunteers. I hope the banded dotterels get all the support they need. Banded Dotterel Study Kaikoura https://play.stuff.co.nz/details/_6203720732001

22.01.2022 Time for our migratory plovers! These birds are migration champions! They travel thousands of km every year between their breeding and non-breeding grounds, along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Habitat loss and degradation in their stop-over feeding grounds are an important threat for these species. There are at least six species (excluding vagrants) that come to spend the austral summer to Australia’s coastline, after breeding in the Arctic tundra over June and July. Du...ring their time in Australia, they feed constantly to get fat and enough reserved for their long trip back to the tundra! Well, there is an exception! We have one migratory plover that spends winter with us and breeds in New Zealand. Do you know which one? Keep reading to find out! In Australia, we often find migratory plovers in their non-breeding plumage, but we’ve added drawings from our BirdLife Australia's 'Shorebirds Identification booklet' to show you their colour diversity! 18.01.2022 With funding support from the Victorian Government’s Icon Species Fund, our specialist team of banders have been targeting individual birds from different parts of Victoria for genetic sampling. The team are specialised in catching these very clever birds using a special trap, and each bird is measured, weighed and a drop of blood taken from the tarsal vein. The birds are tagged each with a metal band (with a unique number supplied by the Australian Government’s ABBBS) and an engraved white flag with two unique letters. We have caught birds as far west now as Discovery Bay and as far east as Corner Inlet! Another expedition to go and we will have a comprehensive set from across the Victorian coast! 14.01.2022 The Beach-nesting Birds program uses a number of online portals to manage the wealth of information that comes through the program. While it would be ideal to have one location for everything, we’ve been limited by funding over the years. We’ve done our best to develop tools and resources tailored to their different uses. For example, during the biennial count, you’ll be aware that we have specific data sheets to ensure we can compare the data from one count to the next. This... data gets entered in to Birdata and you can even use an app in the field to directly collect this information! This is distinct from our access-restricted My Beach Bird portal where only highly trained volunteers or land managers enter this sensitive data about nest monitoring. Below is an outline of each of the portals to assist you with knowing the best place to locate info and report data! We’re always at the end of an email too, so if you’re ever stuck, email [email protected]

14.01.2022 It’s mid November and an even numbered yearwhich means it’s time for the Eastern Hooded Plover biennial count! All suitable ocean beaches across South Australia, Victoria and southern NSW are surveyed within a two-week window to give us our best estimate of population size. We also record threats observed, getting a great overview of the spread of threats facing the birds along their mainland range. This year even parts of Tassie are participating! The count isn’t just a wa...lk on the beach, equipped with a data sheet (or smartphone) and binoculars, our skilled citizen scientists make it possible to survey thousands of kilometres of beach for this incredibly valuable data. We have used this data to demonstrate species decline, leading to its listing as Nationally threatened in 2014. We’ve used it to recognise parts of the coast with the highest breeding bird densities to focus our conservation efforts, and to identify parts of the coast with worrying negative trends where we have then established further monitoring to learn why. We’ve also been able to highlight increases in hoodie populations directly linked to investment in breeding site protection. The count is also a great opportunity for those who are time poor, but have much to offer, enabling them to participate in a meaningful conservation activity! Please share your images of hoodie habitat as you participate in the count this year using #hoodiecount Below are some images from yesterday's survey in Corner Inlet, Victoria National Landcare Program Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority BirdLife Australia Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment Corangamite Catchment Management Authority West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board Kangaroo Island Landscape Board Northern and Yorke Landscape Board Limestone Coast Landscape Board Threatened Species Commissioner Sussan Ley MP NRM North Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board Green Adelaide NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Parks Victoria DELWP Gippsland DELWP BarwonSouthWest

14.01.2022 Our Coastal Birds Program leader, Grainne, was keeping her Hooded Plover outfit for #PloverAppreciationDay! We think she's outdone herself! In her own words: "Last but not least, plover outfit 5. The Hooded Plover is my favourite plover, possibly because so many of my happy memories are linked to this species. Hoodies are so clever with their camouflage and distraction behaviours. They are determined and will renest until time runs out, sometimes as many as seven times in a s...eason. 11.01.2022 Nesting is now well underway. Be careful during your visit to the beach these holidays and watch your step!

11.01.2022 Plovers are a diverse bunch that come in all shapes and sizes. Some of our plovers are seasonal visitors, flying from far flung corners of the world each year, and others are residents that live here all year round. They are ground nesters, and their nest is a shallow scrape in the open ground! Some of them are our familiar urban neighbours and others are shy and endangered beach nesters. And yes! We’re including lapwings and dotterels! The family Charadriidae includes two su...bfamilies, Charadriinae (plovers + dotterels) and Vanellinae (lapwings). So you could think of it as if plovers and dotterels are like siblings and lapwings are their cousins. To honour all plovers of Australia, we’ll share with you some fun facts of all species we can find here. We’ll start with our resident plovers! Scroll through to learn about each one of them. #PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover BirdLife Australia Threatened Species Commissioner

11.01.2022 Plover Appreciation Day is also a day to appreciate all our volunteers! They're the ones who make this recovery program possible! Our Project Officers, Dan and Sonia, have recently surveyed Discovery Bay, from Nelson (VIC) to Cape Bridgewater (VIC), for the Eastern Hooded Plover Biennial Count. Dave from the Glenelg Hopkins CMA joined them as well! This is a stretch of almost 60 km of suitable hoodie habitat, so a good effort and post-lockdown exercise for the counters! The highlight was finding two Hooded Plover chicks (possibly fledglings, as they seemed pretty ready, although... we didn't see them fly!) 05.01.2022 ? Hooded Plover fledgling (a chick who’s reached flying stage) at the Mornington Peninsula! Hoodies are in the peak of their breeding season on south...ern Australia’s beaches and every single fledgling is precious! But without any management, only ~2-3 out of 100 eggs become adult and chances increase dramatically when chicks reach flying stage. This is why we ask you to help us give Hoodie chicks a chance this long weekend. You can enjoy the beach while sharing it with the Hoodies walk on the water’s edge, stay away from fenced areas and keep your dog on the leash. It takes the whole community to get the little fluffs through and we’re so grateful for your help! on behalf of BirdLife Australia's Beach-nesting Birds team (Hooded Plover), their partners and volunteers who work hard to protect the Hoodies, one fledgling at a time. :
