09.01.2022 Within the past two weeks I have been present while Farrier friends were aggressively kicked in the chest, and yesterday violently thrown to the ground and tram...pled. In each case, the barns were lovely and well appointed, the owners caring and the horses high end. But it led me to think of the dangers we Farriers face and the lack of thought, planning, appreciation and care we too often encounter. All Farriers have horror stories where they have been badly injured. Many of us know Farriers killed doing this job. Here is a very basic list of what owners should provide, and MANY barns and owners don’t. 1 Flat, dry surface to work on ( we already have to deal with the slip and slide mess created by squirting mares, horse urine and feces we don’t need to be catching our feet in uneven worn out mats ) 2 SHADE and protection from the weather ( we are there working on your horse/s sometimes for hours . Far too often I see barns where shade is provided for clients to groom their horse while it is expected the Farrier should be content to work hours on end battling the elements with no protection at all ) 3 Lighting ( there is an extremely small margin of error in the nailing zone. When lighting is poor, expect the normal ratio of 1/100 horses hot nailed to increase substantially ) 4 Situational Safety measures ( restrain your dogs they do not need to be running under horses and scaring them to get hoof treats. Restrain your children, they do not need to be there feeding treats or petting the horse while we are under them. Be thoughtful and proactive in your actions, loud noise, close machinery and unexpected actions can often spook horses and put us at additional risk APPRECIATE US please don’t take us, our time our commitment to your horses for granted. This is a difficult job, most of us do it with love and passion for the horse. Please treat us with respect.
