25.01.2022 When WordPress websites are in development on staging servers, designers often tick a box in Settings>Reading called discourage search engine robots. This is to try to ensure your website isnt indexed while it is still in development*, so people dont see your unfinished work until it is ready. Sometimes in the excitement of launch, they forget to untick this box . The result can be that your website is hidden from search results. If you dont show up even when searching your own business name, check if this is the issue. Its basically like Harry Potters invisibility cloak for the internet. 25.01.2022 After spending the best part of a day wrestling with the implications of 4k monitors for website design and build, its nice to know that others have observed - in this case, quite eloquently - how complicated this design caper seems to have become. Recommended reading if youre thinking of commissioning a website and want to get into the mind of your dev partner. https://uxdesign.cc/design-tools-are-holding-us-back-1aca26

24.01.2022 What does mobile-first design mean? Web design might need to be turned upside down (literally). Phones and tablets are no longer in the minority of use-cases for websites. The size and shape of handheld devices affects where you put buttons and nav (if you want people to use them). Thoughtful article here... https://www.smashingmagazine.com//bottom-navigation-patte/

24.01.2022 Thanks Sandy from Mason Gray Insurance and Risk for the lovely 5 star google review. We recently wrote fresh new SEO Copy for the Mason Gray website to help them appear better in search. Sandy also reviewed and secured new business insurance for us and comes highly recommended if you are looking for the right personal and business cover for your situation.

23.01.2022 GOOGLE LOVE... thanks our fabulous client Anita Harrop over at OBrien Harrop Access for our latest Google Review. Whats even better than a 5-star review? Having your client email you with plans to add more services to the site and projects to the portfolio as they are just so PUMPED (her words) about the new look and feel.

23.01.2022 Nothing like a bit of breakpoint planning on a winters day. This is what a WordPress website looks like behind the pictures.

23.01.2022 Lunch at the desk aint so bad when we have pies from WEST END deli in reach! Perfect rainy day fare...

21.01.2022 Friday Flashback...our original website under our old business name. Can you tell we were into Mad Man? Website technology and styles evolve constantly. Our current website is now 5 years old and we are about to do a complete overhaul, likewise we are working with 3 long term clients this year to launch new versions of their websites that reflect changes in their business and the digital environment. In fact, the majority of our work these days is with established business...es who have outgrown their current website and need a new solution that reflects where their business is now, where they want to be in the next few years, and what todays website visitors expect in terms of usability and content. We all know its been a tough business environment for the last few years, and the businesses that have evolved have been the ones that stuck it out. So if your website does need an overhaul, take that as a sign of success!

19.01.2022 Our friends at Apparatus are calling for expressions of interest for two major public artworks at Burswood City.

18.01.2022 There is no doubt that having a well optimised Google My Business listing is a great tool to help your business show up in local search. However, a listing (or a facebook business page for that matter) doesnt replace the need for a quality website for small business. Search Engine Land reports that "a May 2019 consumer survey from BrightLocal found nearly twice as many respondents (56%) expected small business websites to be accurate compared with Google My Business (32%). ...This was a surprise. However, a 2018 survey from the SEO firm found that the most common consumer action by a fairly significant margin, after reading a positive review, was to visit the SMBs website." So by all means take advantage of Google My Business and optimise your listing but dont rely on it as your sole online presence. Remember that when you are using platforms like Facebook and GMB, you are building your castle on someone elses land. 18.01.2022 I posted this to a private group yesterday, and in hindsight it might be of interest to the broader business community... Whats Involved in adding eCommerce to a site? Unsurprisingly, weve had a few requests in recent days to add e-commerce and mail order functionality onto websites.... The intent is always good, and its great to see people adapting to changing times. However, some e-commerce basics are easily forgotten in a panic. So if its any help - here are some potential hazards for businesses... 1. Its not set and forget. In fact, its the opposite. More like opening a new branch. 2. Without a full set of terms and policies, your exposure to complaint is practically unlimited. 3. Shipping is not an afterthought. Despatch is the heart of the operation. 4. Payment gateways dont automatically sync online sales to your books, unless you specify it. 5. Linking inventory systems to your store prevents over selling, but can be costly to integrate. Especially if you dont have an inventory to start with. 6. Products come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and options. Added to the question of how many products you offer, this is where setup costs often blow out. 7. Your online store is only as sound as your supply chain. 8. You will inevitably be undercut by someone else, who may in fact be drop shipping rather than warehousing (look it up), and leveraging bulk supply advantages (eg Amazon). If in doubt: do a masterful job of taking ONE product to market, then repeat the formula.

17.01.2022 This is a terrific read if youre interested in improving the tone of voice in your website in the often-overlooked areas of interaction text (messages, reminders, prompts, etc). https://uxdesign.cc/how-to-write-for-interactions-3ff03080f

16.01.2022 Sometimes, a designer is to development as a lemming is to a cliff, and weve been doing LOTS of dev this week, so heres some associated reading about computer science (hey! come back!) for your Friday morning coffee. Spoiler alert: the lemming survives. "We are developing algorithms that discriminate at scale. We have created platforms that allow propaganda and toxicity to multiply and fester." - Quite a fascinating blog post from a 2-times ex-Google employee about the stat...e of big tech, and the ethical responsibilities of people who write software. https://www.vrk.dev/2019/06/16/new-job-at-glitch-part-2/ Meanwhile - Lemming Aid https://vimeo.com/126985538

16.01.2022 Lets talk about case studies ... If you are a professional service provider, case studies (also known as portfolios or shown as our work menu items) are one of the most powerful forms of social proof you can have. Because your service is intangible, having a well written case study showing what your clients problem was, how you addressed it, and the great outcome they enjoyed as a result is GOLD GOLD GOLD when it comes to convincing your ideal client that you are th...e one for them For our client OHA (OBrien Harrop Access) we custom built a portfolio that could feature images of the major projects they work on to ensure accessibility - projects such as Yagan Square and Matagarup Bridge, which are instantly recognisable to Perth locals. Their porfolio is built for adding to in the future, and OHA are already planning ahead by gathering photographic evidence of new projects with their portfolio in mind. Like any post or page on your WordPress website, case studies can be optimised for search engines to ensure they target topics that your clients are searching for through long tail keyword terms - its the perfect way to add valuable and relevant content to your website to help the right clients find you. If you have a professional service-based business, consider how you can use case studies to power up your marketing.

15.01.2022 [JUST LAUNCHED] Congratulations to FIFO Focus on their refreshed website! We have been working with head honcho, psychologist and FIFO mental health advocate Sandra Lam for over three years and designed her initial WordPress website in 2016. ... Due to Sandras indefatigable efforts to improve mental health outcomes for FIFO workers, the business has evolved to deliver a range of psychological and educational services to FIFO workers and their families as well as FIFO employers. They have also grown their team of registered psychologists who deliver evidenced-based mental health services based on a proactive approach and prevention of mental harm. The evolution of FIFO Focus meant it was time for an overhaul of the structure, content, look and feel of the FIFO Focus website in a way that protected the in-roads the existing site had made, while allowing it to grow in coming years. We restructured, redesigned, rewrote and rebuilt the site at https://www.fifofocus.com.au/ to set FIFO Focus up for the next phase of important work in supporting mental wellbeing among FIFO sector. We look forward to seeing FIFO Focus continue to grow and deliver its important work.

12.01.2022 "Tiny Hand" - the most perfectly named font ever.

12.01.2022 hehe...love the creativity of this custom 404 page from Huffington Post. No one likes a 404 error on a website, but if you make it on brand with a side dish of humour, it definitely counts for something. Well definitely consider some creative 404 pages on our upcoming websites...just in case.

08.01.2022 Are you using "Call Now" Call-to-Action buttons on your Facebook business page? Apparently Facebook did some resets last night and all numbers have reverted to +1 international prefix, meaning they will no longer work for Australian numbers. You can edit this by going into your "Settings>Page Info" and reselecting the +61 prefix. Thanks to Mdvs Business Services Social Media Strategist for the heads up!

07.01.2022 Speed remains a theme for SEO on websites. Were geeking out on this article about jpeg image compression. Great content, beautifully presented. Theres even a photo of a cat. https://parametric.press/issue-01/unraveling-the-jpeg/

06.01.2022 Melbourne Writers Festival + State Library of Victoria = thrilling opportunity for us to contribute - even just slightly - to a conversation about Love! "When We Talk About Love" is the theme of MWF this year, and the newly-refitted State Library is playing host to many events. The ever-inspiring Sime Nugent has been charged with adding some colour and movement to this space as well as adjacent venues. Were in tow, adding some print graphics here and there. If youre in Mel...bourne for MWF later this month, we heartily recommend this website, which is built by the talented crew at Ed: https://mwf.com.au/ See more

02.01.2022 This is why we offer all our website clients managed hosting, and why others are often surprised by the cost to rescue a site that either hasnt been maintained or built properly. "I regularly do website rescues where someone hasnt updated their site in years. In most of these cases, the site owner didnt realise that their web designer or their host doesnt do all the maintenance and updates for them forever for free...For some of the sites, we can tease out the tangled mess and update things and fix things that break on updating it to the latest version...With other sites, the only option is to cut out the knots and start again fresh on a new website. The cost to fix is more than the cost of a whole new website." https://www.flyingsolo.com.au//why-website-maintenance-is-
