23.01.2022 Important information regarding availability of EpiPen Junior. International manufacturing delays have led to a restriction in the supply in Australia of EpiPen Jr (EpiPen Adult is not affected). Patients with anaphylaxis should have an EpiPen on hand - which may require some planning. Due to the shortage it is highly unlikely that a pharmacy would have EpiPen Jr devices on their shelves at the last minute.... If you are a carer for a child who may need access to an EpiPen Jr the process for pharmacies to access emergency supply is as follows: 1. Prescription is presented at the pharmacy. 2. The pharmacist liaises with Mylan Customer Support Team via telephone and provide non-identifiable patient and prescription details. These include prescription ID numbers, patient weight, patient initials, and a clear statement that no EpiPen Jr is available for this patient. 3. The pharmacy will then be "approved" to place an order for one unit specifically for this patient. 4. Stock will be dispatched to the pharmacy but delivery times are between 2 and 5 days. Our pharmacists take the supply of EpiPen Jr very seriously and we appreciate the importance of patients with a life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) having access to the treatment they may need. Compounding this problem is the fact that EpiPens generally have a short shelf life (sometimes less than 12 months). As per the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy : Expired adrenaline autoinjectors are not as effective when used for treating allergic reactions and should not be relied upon to treat anaphylaxis. However, the most recently expired adrenaline autoinjector available should be used if no in-date device is available.

20.01.2022 Heatwave conditions As the heatwave continues, watch for signs of dehydration. Babies and the elderly are most at risk, but anyone can get dehydrated. Heat exhaustion can be caused by mild dehydration and the symptoms include thirst, headache, dizziness, dark urine and raised body temperature.... Heat Exhaustion - what to do: Lie down in shade or air-conditioning Drink water or a rehydration solution Use a cool compress or damp tea towel on your body, including your forehead Take a cool shower or bath Heat stroke can be caused by more severe dehydration and the symptoms include rapid breathing, lack of urine, confusion, drowsiness and irritability. Heat Stroke - what to do: Seek urgent medical advice or call 000 immediately you recognise any of these symptoms Until help arrives, cool and rehydrate your body, as above for heat exhaustion NOTE: Fluids lost through sweating include sodium, potassium and other minerals, not just water. Its important to replace the missing minerals as well as the water. The ideal rehydration solution includes sodium, potassium, glucose and water in a scientific ratio. The most palatable solutions are the ready-made products available at the pharmacy. And the more your drink, the better you will feel. For more information have a read at https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/dehydration
