No...t all; but many Victorians need a release from the stress and the ability to go for a fish for their mental health. This is a compromise. Please share! The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria EASING THE BAN ON RECREATIONAL FISHING IN VICTORIA Around One Million Victorians love to wet a line and catch a great feed of fish. It’s part of their lifestyle and its healthy for their livelihood. Of those one million Victorians, many of them find recreational fishing the most relaxing thing they do. It relieves the stresses we face in life. It’s one of those rare activities where you just forget about the rest of the world while you anticipate your next bite. It is an activity that is essential for many Victorians mental health. Recreational fishing, under strict social distancing and gathering rules, is allowed in every other State and Territory except Victoria. The Futurefish Foundation applauds the tough stance that the Victorian Government is taking on preventing the spread of Covid-19, but the inconsistency when it comes to recreational fishing compared to other States needs reconsidering. Recreational fishing can be undertaken, with strict rules applied, without even the slightest chance of spreading the virus. We want to encourage the Victorian Government to continue the tough stance, including the strictest rules in Australia around allowing Victorians to go recreational fishing for mental health benefits. That is why the Futurefish Foundation is calling on you and the Victorian Chief Health Officer Prof Brett Sutton to ease the ban on recreational fishing. We are not asking for a total lifting of the ban; just an easing to allow those that rely on fishing for mental health to be able to go fishing safely and be in a better mindset to cope with the overall isolation Victorians are experiencing right now. These are the proposed rules for recreational fishing in Victoria: 1. If you don’t need to go fishing, then stay at home. If it is your only outlet for mental health benefits, then you must abide by these strict rules. 2. If you live in Regional Victoria, it is okay for you to go fishing in your local waterway but you must abide by the strict social distancing and gathering rules. 3. If you are fishing solo, you should always let someone know where you are going and when you will be home. That is a must at any time, but particularly important now. 4. For Port Phillip Bay and Western Port. Because these are heavily populated areas, we cannot put people at risk through fishing. That is why the rules are a bit tougher. All fishing from a boat on Port Phillip Bay and Western Port must be within the hours of sunrise and sunset. You must be back at the ramp and on the road home prior to sunset. You may only fish with immediate family members, members of your household or as a couple if you and your partner don’t live together. Fishing just with a mate is not allowed. It’s too risky. Fishing from piers in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port is banned. The potential for breaking the gathering rules is just too great by consequence of fishing being allowed. Fishing from the shoreline is allowed within the Port Phillip Bay and Western Port regions, but you must abide by the strict social distancing and gathering rules. Fishing from the banks of a river is allowed within the Port Phillip Bay and Western Port regions, but you must abide by the strict social distancing and gathering rules. Please, could you consider implementing these tough restrictions that allow the easing of the ban for those that have no other outlet than fishing to provide mental health benefits. Because of this over the next few weeks we will be uploading a stack of videos too try keep you occupied and help teach things like knots and other bits and pieces.
