06.01.2022 Our game was cancelled in New Orleans tonight so it gave me a chance to take a moment and reflect on this particular day and how I could possibly influence chan...ge for the better. In Australia, January 26 is officially the country’s national day and the sole purpose of this national day is to unite people. But to Indigenous Australians this particular day is a day of mourning to reflect, acknowledge and remember all the lives that have been lost since the British claimed the land on this same day in 1788. From slavery to mass murders, this day means extreme loss and trauma to all Indigenous Australians. So if the foundation of this very day is centered around a British culture that killed to establish control over a country that was not their own - whether you are an Indigenous or non-Indigenous Australian, what exactly is there to celebrate on this particular day? To abandon facts, is to abandon freedom Although I may think I can change the world at times, the real opportunity today comes for non-Indigenous Australians to be brave enough to be educated about our country’s painful past and by taking part in truth-telling conversations. You have the privilege to be the real influences of this change. If you can mourn and grieve with us, then you can heal and grow with us. Then we can walk and celebrate together - on another day.
