25.01.2022 Apologies if this has been shared here already....

22.01.2022 Maggie strongly disapproves of being told that if she can make it UP the stairs all by herself, it's time that she learn how to come DOWN them by herself, too.

21.01.2022 Hi all! Have you got your summer appointments booked? We are booking up fast so prebooking for the silly season is a must! We will be closed between the 25th of September until the 2nd of October, so we are currently taking bookings for the 2nd of October onwards. We look forward to seeing you and your fur babies soon!

21.01.2022 **UPDATE** RILEY HAS BEEN FOUND THANKYOU FOR SHARING AND LOOKINGOUT FOR HIM Hey guys my dog has gotten out of the yard around 7pm in karabar his name is Riley and is friendly. He is a 2 year old german shepard.

21.01.2022 Hi everyone! I hope you’re doing well! I have sustained a nasty thumb injury so please forgive me if I take a while to respond to your messages. I will get back to you ASAP! Please forgive me if my responses have a few mistakes in them, I’m currently using Siri to type and as we all know she has a little trouble translating some times. Just a bit of an update regarding December availability: I have decided that it would be easier to share the appointments we have left for th...e rest of the year rather then have to decline multiple appointments requests in the near future. As you can imagine with the warmer weather and it being the festive season things are quite hectic at the salon over the month of December, we are trying to get through as many fluffy friends as is physically possible however unfortunately we are not super humans and can only do a certain number of grooms per day. (Please do not ask us to ‘squeeze’ your pet in if we inform you that we’re fully booked on the date you’re hoping for, unfortunately this is not something we are not physically able to do if we are booked to capacity.) The remaining appointments for the year are as follows: 8/12- 4slots left 9/12- 3 slots left 11/12- 5 slots left 18/12 - 3slots left I will update this post as appointments book out. If you would like to be placed on the cancellation list in the mean time please let us know! If you have booked an appointment and are unable to attend please try to give us as much notice as possible so that we can get some one in ASAP of the cancellation list. I look forward to seeing you all over the next few weeks and in the new year!

20.01.2022 Hello Hooves and houndians, please remember that Social distancing rules apply in our salon! Please maintain a 1.5m distance from our staff when entering and exiting the salon with your pet. Please Do not come in to the salon if you’re currently awaiting results for a Covid test, are feeling ill, are in isolation or have recently been in a hotspot. We can reschedule your appointment if you are in any of these categories If your leash isn’t long enough to stay 1.5 meters away... please utilise the leash tie down point next too the entry door. (Insuring you have closed the door behind you.) Whilst I may bend down to greet your pup and give them hugs/receive kisses from them upon your arrival, unfortunately I am not offering that sort of greeting to human clients. You do not have an invitation too breach the recommended personal space guidelines. We are endeavouring to avoid having to reimplement the contactless crate drop off and payment system however, it will become nessicary if social distancing rules continue to be breached at the rate that they are currently. Please understand that we are trying to keep you, our staff, family members and ourselves safe at this time. We want to be able to stay open so that we’re able to pamper all of our four legged friends! Clients are also not permitted to open the door posted with staff only on it and enter the bathing area. Whilst we understand it is tempting to run in to see your dogs new hair do or pat the other dogs being groomed It is a restricted area and we do not permit public access for health and safety reasons along with it being a distraction to the dogs currently being groomed and the staff members. Groomers use sharp tools and exciting a dog on the table can lead to accidental injury being inflicted on the groomer or dog being groomed. We will let you know when you’re beloved furry friend will be ready for pick up and bring them out too you on your arrival. We are looking forward to seeing you and your puppers soon and hope that you’re all staying safe, well and warm!

20.01.2022 Hello pets and pet parents! The salon is currently booked up 7-14 days in advance and rebooking is essential to guarantee a spot for our furry four legged friends to be groomed. Please ensure you secure a spot and avoid disappointment for your canine companions by booking on a reoccurring schedule to keep them feeling fresh over winter. We are moving to a much bigger location on 4/48 Aurora Ave, Queanbeyan NSW which is just down the road from our current location. (Opening ...date at the new location too be announced. After completion of renovations.) The best and most exciting part about the move? We will be opening up a daycare section for grooming clients on selected days! We will be offering different appointment options including in and out appointments, half day stays and full daycare for our clients so we will have options to suit everyone’s schedules. For more information or to make a booking contact the Buisness page and watch this space for announcements!

17.01.2022 Over the past few weeks we have seen a large increase in the number of dogs presenting to us with Canine Cough, also known as 'Kennel Cough'. Kennel Cough is a... highly contagious respiratory illness which often presents with a harsh and persistent hacking cough, like your pet has something stuck in their throat. You may also notice sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy or loss of appetite. Kennel Cough is transmitted via water droplets and can be passed on via direct contact with an infected animal as well as indirectly by coming into contact with a contaminated surface (e.g. the shared water bowl at a public dog park). We have even seen infections occur in dogs who haven't left their backyard, which makes the name 'Kennel Cough' very misleading. Whilst a boarding kennel is a popular place for an outbreak due to large gatherings of dogs in one place, infections can occur anywhere, regardless of whether your dog goes to kennels or not. Luckily, there are vaccines available to help prevent your pet from contracting this illness. Although vaccination doesn't guarantee immnuity from the desease, it does reduce your pet's chances and means an infection will be less severe and easier to treat than if they didn't receive the vaccination. If you notice any signs that your pet may be unwell or you need to check your pet's vaccination status, please call us on 6230 2223. https://www.hallvet.com.au//canberras-kennel-cough-outbre/

12.01.2022 Let’s talk canine nutrition! Do you know what is in your dogs food? The pet food industry in Australia is vastly unregulated, this is why it is important to supplement your pets diet with human grade ingredients and be aware of what’s going into your pets food. A healthy dog starts from the inside out! Grain free diets: Grain free natural diets are a great way to keep your pet healthy with many producers using natural preservatives and quality ingredients. 12.01.2022 Dear valued customers, In light of the current uncertainty surrounding the Covid 19 pandemic, we have endeavored to create a new contactless drop off, pick up and payment system for the safety of our staff, our customers and their families. Please bear with us during this time as appointments may run longer and be more spaced out then usual. Whilst we await confirmation that we are allowed to still operate as a ‘non essential’ business we will be closed until Friday the 27th,... unless instructed otherwise we will be opening on the morning of the 27th as normal. (Appointments during the closure will be rescheduled to a convenient time for our pet parents.) You will now be required to Pay online for your appointment and provide a screenshot of the payment prior to commencement. We will be providing hand sanitizers and crates for drop off and pick up of your pet outside the salon door. Please let us know a few minutes before you arrive. We ask that you sanitize your hands and place your dog into the holding crate then remove their collar and lead before securing the crate. Once your pup is placed in the crate, please head back to your car and notify us by text but stay in the area until we come out and remove them from the crate and bring them into the salon too start their pamper session. All crates and equipment will be sanitized and disinfected between dogs as normal, and we will be wearing masks for your protection and ours. If you are having financial difficulty during this time please let us know and we will be happy to work out a payment plan. We work in this industry because we are passionate about animals and don’t want anyone or their pet to miss out due to these unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances. Please reschedule your appointment if you are felling unwell or unable to make it in. We understand that some people are in self isolation and will not hold it against you if you want or need to reschedule. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing you and our beloved four legged friends in the near future and hope that you are staying well and positive during this time.

12.01.2022 Can This LOUD Pomeranian ever be made quiet?

11.01.2022 Is your pooch in need of a groom? Hooves and hounds has you covered over the cooler months with multiple grooming options to keep your dog in a full fluffy luxurious coat for winter. Regular bath and maintenance appointments are incredibly important in keeping your pet healthy and free from matting. Insure your dogs coat can be kept long and Matt free in this frosty weather by booking a reoccurring schedule with us, but get in quick! We are currently booking out 2-4 weeks in... advance. Prebooking will insure you and your furry friend won’t miss out on a spot. Did you know that Matting of the coat can cause a plethora of problems for your dog? Groomers take a humanity over vanity stance, this is why you will find that a severely matted dog will be shaved down short. Shaving the dog short under the matting insures the Matt’s can be removed in a timely, humane and pain free manner. It is not humane to expect a dog to stand and be endure 2-4hours or brushing, combing and tugging to keep a matted coat in a longer cut. Dogs can not regulate their body temperature under matting and will often be drastically colder or hotter then they would be with a Matt free coat, so keeping a long matted coat in winter is not advisable. Some other health issues caused by matting of the fur: Restricted blood flow to extremities and ears. Restricted movement. Skin infections. Tissue necrosis and bruising in extreme cases. Entrapment of burs, sticks, grass seed and dirt in the coat and close to the skin. Urine burns from wee soaking into the coat. We know maintaining long coats can be difficult so we are here to help! Keep your pet comfortable, clean, combed out and smelling fruitilicious all year round by bringing them in to see our experienced caring team.

10.01.2022 PLEASE - NO DOG PARKS Unfortunately it has come to our attention (through very reputable sources) that two dogs who regularly visit the Queanbeyan dog park ‘The... Scar’ have been diagnosed with Canine Coronavirus earlier this week. These dogs do not and have never entered our property. Canine coronavirus is not the same as the current Covid-19 pandemic that is gripping the world. It is instead a gastrointestinal virus, with infected dogs showing varying levels of lethargy, lack of appetite, stomach pains, and even vomiting and diarrhoea. Often missed for instead being ‘just a bit off’, it can severely damage the intestinal wall and cause considerable pain. Whilst it is not commonly fatal in and of itself, it can affect immune-suppressed dogs, puppies, and elderly dogs more severely (even leading to death). Dogs may also develop secondary infections which can further debilitate them. It is extremely contagious - passed through faeces, saliva (including water/food bowls and toys), and direct contact. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if the park is empty, your dog could unfortunately pick it up simply by sniffing another dog’s faeces or drinking from the public water source. Vaccinations for it are scarce in our region due to the lack of prevalence of the virus here, and a course of injections/boosters are needed rather than just a single dose. Because of this situation, we request that ALL dogs who come on to the property must cease visiting dog parks, as they are unfortunately a cesspool of such viruses/diseases and their transmission (and a whole bunch of other issues that I won’t get into right now but just know that I am definitely NOT a fan of dog parks full stop). Even if you don’t take your dog/s to The Scar, dogs who have come into contact with the virus may have been to other parks etc. so I would personally stay clear from all such parks. Please, nobody is wanting anyone to panic or overreact. We just want dog owners to be aware, use their logic, and just monitor your dog/s and take them to the vet if they are showing any signs of being unwell. And of course to inform me if your dog is unwell. Nobody wants this spreading further and wreaking havoc with our furry friends. We are hoping the vets who diagnosed these dogs (and the dogs’ owner) will take appropriate action in spreading the news, however, as they have not already done so, we decided to take action ourselves to best try and prevent the occurrence of the virus here and to spread awareness of something that could affect yours and our dogs and my business. Thank you all so much for your cooperation and I’m sorry to cause any inconvenience with this new request, however my main priority is and always will be the health and safety of the dogs I care for (as well as my own!).

To account for this we will have some closure periods while I am away doing practical assessments and some slightly altered Buisness hours. (Private Behavioral training sessions will be available later in the year.) -We are still registered and operating under COVID safe procedures. You will not be able enter the salon if you are ill, have been interstate to a hotspot or have been in contact with a confirmed case. 09.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what goes into the bathing process at hooves and hounds? We begin the bathing process by gently placing Cotten buds in the dogs ears to prevent any water from entering the ear canal and commence rinsing in the appropriate shampoo for your furry friends coat condition and dermal requirements. (We have an organic canine formulated product for every coat type and colour so to determine what product is best for your dog have a chat to one of our friendly te...am members.) Next up we don the exfoliating gloves and massage in more shampoo for the second wash to give a deeper clean right down to the follicle. This removes any excess dirt, skin flakes and other debris from the coat. We then throughly rinse all of the shampoo out of the dogs coat with warm fresh water from our hydro bath ensuring the coat is completely free of all product. Next up we deep condition the dog, closing the pours and sealing the hair follicles giving the coat a silky smooth finish and again rinse all product from the coat. At this stage we no longer have a mucky puppy, but rather a squeaky clean canine! To begin the drying process we massage the excess water from the dogs coat, chemosis shammy, towel dry and sprits the dog in anti static conditioning spray in preparation for blow drying. Your dog will now be blow dried, straight dried, fluffed up and combed out in preparation for their groom. Occasionally we get dogs who don’t like the noise and feeling of the dryer, to reduce stress we place them in the gentle drying modular which drys them in a quiet and gentle manner by softly blowing room temperature air through a ventilated pen. For more information on our processes message us today!

04.01.2022 Australia is a warm country but in winter we can have a wide variety of temperatures between states! Horses do not feel the cold the same way humans do - so ho...w do you know what rug, if any, to choose for your horse? Horse owners have varying opinions when it comes to rugging their horses correctly, multiple considerations need to be accounted for including temperature, rain, humidity, sun, wind and protection from insects. Horses actually manage cold conditions much better than hot/humid conditions, and horse owners can mistakenly believe that horses need to be rugged up at night as soon as a slight nightly chill hits. The Thermoneutral Zone is the temperature range where the horses body temperature can be maintained without any excess energy wastage. A horses Thermoneutral Zone range guide is between 5-25C therefore horse generally will only feel cold when the temperatures drop below approx. 5C and will only feel hot when temperatures reach in excess of 25C. The natural regulation of a horses body temperature is maintained by the warmth generated from the digestion process within the body and fermentation within the hind gut. The horse’s core temperature is generally between 37.5-38.5C and this is regulated by their body. Humans in comparison have a much narrower Thermoneutral Zone, ranging between 25C and 30C. This means while we are shivering outside in the "cold", our horses will still feel comfortable due to their broader Thermoneutral Zone, therefore we must take the climate, conditions and our horses age/condition into account when deciding to rug our horses. Factors to take into consideration before deciding to rug your horse are: - Horses naturally move around in the wild and their paddocks to generate warmth and will get colder if stabled - The horse's coat is natural insulation and is removed if clipped, clipped horses therefore will require heavier rugging - Some breeds acclimatise better to weather extremes than others - A well covered horse will handle the cold conditions better than an underweight horse - It is essentiel to remove heavier rugs in the morning on clear sunny days as a heavier rug disrupts the horses ability to naturally regulate heat. - Rainy weather can also be very humid weather. It is sometimes better to leave a horse unrugged in the rain or with a breathable unlined canvas rug on than to leave a heavier or no breathable synthetic rug on causing the horse to sweat on a humid rainy storm. Remember a horse can run around or eat roughage to generate body warmth but if the horse is over rugged it is unable to remove its own rugs to cool itself down. Rugging Temperatures (Celsius) Below is a rugging guideline - a general rule, if your horse is not clipped and in healthy shape: - Negative 10 to 0 degrees 1200Denier with 300gram polyfill rug with a quaity cotton or fleece rug underneath is recommended. Make sure you use a combo rug. - 0 to 5 degrees 200gram polyfill, medium weight rug. - 5 to 10 degrees LightWeight rug, 100-150gram polyfill. (No fill during the day if Sunny). - 10 to 15 degrees Light cotton rug, nothing or zero fill. - 15 degrees and up No rug required - a mesh/flag/cotton rug can be used for protection of sun or insects. Please note these are a guideline only, as with all things horses there are always exceptions. Please also consider your horses age, body condition, living/shelter arrangements, access to roughage and general health before deciding on your rugging requirements.
