25.01.2022 Congratulations Sue Mae Chua for winning the Hope Katolo Hamper of Hope!! Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets this year. We sold 460 tickets and raised $2,300.
24.01.2022 Hi Everyone, We are happy to announce the winner of the Hamper of Hope raffle this year - Melanie Hill. Thank you so much to everybody who donated towards the fundraiser - an incredible $3845 was raised in the end. We have the first photos through from the families in Kenya receiving their "hampers" of food (attached). You will note from the photos that the rains have finally stopped in Kisumu - some very welcome news at Christmas. Now we just need the fires to stop in Austr...alia. Wishing you all a very safe and happy 2020, Melanie, Leanne and Georgina
23.01.2022 Hi Hope Katolo supporters, We sincerely hope that this Facebook update finds you safe and healthy during these extremely distressing times. Many of you have reached out and asked how COVID19 is affecting Georgina, the staff and children of the nursery school.... Kenya has 126 COVID19 cases and has had 4 deaths. The more pressing concern for the people in Katolo is the urgent need for food. Social distancing measures have meant that work has ceased and schools are closed. Given that so many of the community live hand to mouth, this spells disaster with many already going hungry. To make things more complex, some similar social issues are occurring in Kenya as we have seen here. The local market place has been subject to stockpiling by wealthy out-of-towners. They have the benefit of owning freezers which of course the people of Katolo (with no electricity and little money) do not. In addition, people are moving back to Katolo from the big cities of Nairobi and Mombasa to flee the virus (and some coming home because they have no means of income). We have sent funds over this evening with plans to have any food that can be found transported direct from the nearest town (Katito) to the school. If we can source enough food, we are hoping to reinstate the feeding program, providing one meal per day to the school community. This will, of course, involve navigating the social distancing requirements. In the meantime, we are praying that corona virus does not make it to Katolo. So many people in Katolo are HIV+, including people very, very dear to us. We will try to keep you updated as things progress. Thank you for your support of the nursery school. It is your generosity that means we are able to provide some assistance during this desperate time. You have truly made a difference and continue to do so. Thank you, Melanie Haley, Leanne Pinfold and Georgina Malanga
23.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who has supported the Hope Katolo Hamper of Hope. We are amazed by everyones generosity. Exciting news is that we have raised over $2300 so far!!
23.01.2022 Muddy times in Katolo this week. Plenty of rain causing havoc, but Hope Katolo Nursery School attendance has still been great. Thanks Georgina for sharing the photo.
22.01.2022 Globally, 1 in 5 girls is married off before turning 18, robbing them of the ability to determine their own future. On Fridays #ValentinesDay and every day, UNFPA is helping girls around the world say #IDONT to child marriage.
22.01.2022 Thank you to Forest Hill Rotary Group for hosting a fundraiser theatre night for Hope Katolo Nursery School.....
22.01.2022 Georgina, From all the staff and students in Kenya and supporters of Hope Katolo Nursery School from all over the world we want to wish you a very Happy Birthday!! Thank you for all your hard work. You really are an inspiration love Leanne and Melanie xx
20.01.2022 Just a reminder our fundraising movie night featuring the Lion King is only 2 days away!! Ticket sales have been great. We need to give final numbers to the cinema by this afternoon, so please let us know this morning if you still want tickets. We are looking forward to a really fun night.
19.01.2022 Dear fantastic Hope Katolo supporters, Firstly, thank you to those of you who responded to our email regarding the dire situation in Kenya with donations this week. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and absolutely critical. We have some very encouraging news. Despite the stockpiling of food at local markets, the money that we sent last week has allowed Georgina to buy much needed supplies for the desperately vulnerable families of the nursery school. Her is some of Ge...orginas email to us... We wanted like to give all families but it was not enough hence we chose the first 50 families and with the help Faith and Teacher Clifford have started distributing it to them. You can imagine the kind of gratitude they are returning due to such a surprise. The likes of Samson, Alfonse, Emmanuel and victor family was almost collapsing of hunger. The mother could not even be able to lift the five tins of maize to her head leave alone, carry the beans, rice and salad!. So sad We did it for two days and I am glad all the 50 families had some food. This is how I shared it out 5 tins of maize 10kgs 2 tins of beans 4kgs 2 litres of oil 2 tins of Rice 1 bottle of handwashing liquid soap to each family. This if wisely used can take up to 21 days. Georgina went on to describe that this provision of food was the last hope for many of these families. The food delivered was literally the difference between life and death. It is hard for us to fathom, even in these extremely challenging times. Please see some photos of the delivery of supplies (including families who received the supplies) attached. FYI the beautiful young lady in the striped skirt is Faith, Georginas youngest daughter. Georgina has a compromised immune system and was therefore not involved in the delivery of supplies. Like most countries, the social restrictions in Kenya are ramping up. This could spell disaster for communities like Katolo where people live hand to mouth (and where there is minimal opportunity to store food due to no refrigeration/electricity). We have sent more money today with the intent of purchasing more supplies in the event of a short-term more restrictive lockdown. Unfortunately, COVID19 has found its way to Kisumu, which is a large town about 1 hour from Katolo. We will keep you posted. Thanks for giving us hope, which in turn gives the people in Katolo hope. Its all in the name more relevant now than ever. Warmest Regards, Melanie Haley, Leanne Pinfold and Georgina Malanga Hope Katolo Nursery School, Kenya
18.01.2022 Here are some more photos of the progress with Georgina’s house. We can’t wait for it to be finished!

14.01.2022 At this difficult time we can be very grateful for the work of Melbourne University physiotherapy students who Melanie was fortunate enough to mentor in 2018 an...d 2019. After conducting gap analysis they decided (they must have had a crystal ball) to create a video on hand washing for the staff and children of Hope Katolo. Thank you Seyuri, Alina, Karen and Nico. We hope that these hand washing lessons help equip the staff and students to stay healthy during times of coronavirus.
13.01.2022 This is what COVID19 looks like in Katolo. When you live hand to mouth and have to abide by social restrictions and tolerate food shortages, starvation is a real threat. Here is Georgina providing some much needed food to a desperate family of the nursery school. This is where your donated money goes, so your money is truly saving lives. Thank you so much for your support.

11.01.2022 Some photos of the final year kids enjoying their excursion to celebrate graduating kindergarten (nursery school). For most of these kids, this is the ONLY excursion that they will have the pleasure of experiencing in their school lives. I groaned at completing another on-line excursion form for Joels school last week. Shame on me. We hope that you enjoy these photos as much as we have. Thanks for all of your support & to Georgina and the teachers for all of your efforts .... Mel & Leanne
11.01.2022 We would like to thank Forest Hill Rotary and all the people who came to see the play Waiting for God last night. The performance by Peridot theatre was fantastic and very enjoyable. Thank you to everybody who was involved with organising the successful event, including those who contributed to the delicious supper. We are so appreciative of the support that your club provides the nursery school. It really does make such a difference

10.01.2022 We have just received a fresh batch of cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Cockatoo Grove. It is an ideal all-purpose oil for creating your favourite salad dressing, drizzling over roasted vegetables, pasta, soup, fish and bruschetta and dipping crusty bread. 500ml bottles are just $12 each or a box of 12 bottles is $120. Please send us a message on this Facebook page or text message Leanne or Melanie if you would like some.
10.01.2022 After efforts to prepare the Hope Katolo Nursery School for re-opening, COVID-19 restrictions have once again ramped up due to increasing numbers and the school remains closed. The new planned re-opening is for Term 1 2021. During this year we have continued to support the staff with much-needed wages and have also sent food to be distributed to staff, students and their families (thanks++ to those who contributed to Student Sponsorship this year who allowed this to happen).

09.01.2022 Hi Hope Katolo Nursery School supporters, The people of Katolo are currently dealing with massive floods that have been damaging houses and making dirt roads impassable. In Western Kenya, over 50 people have lost their lives: https://www.aljazeera.com//searching-kenya-flood-victims-s. In addition, with floods come a host of water-borne diseases and even more challenging circumstances than the Katolo people usually face. This link will take you to a short video taken by... 08.01.2022 Hope Katolo is very excited to report construction has begun of the new house for Georgina. Thanks to Forest Hill Rotary and everyone who has generously donated to this project.
08.01.2022 Hi Everyone, We have some good news Georgina was able to purchase some more food supplies with the second lot of COVID19 crisis money that we sent to Kenya. They were also able to save a little money for use in case of emergency. Georgina reports that there is little movement/activity in the village. Unfortunately the rains have started up again (remember the dreadful floods in December?). Kenya now has 336 confirmed cases of COVID19 and 14 deaths. Kenya has social dist...ancing restrictions in place, including overnight curfews and within country/region travel restrictions. Unfortunately, police enforcement of these policies, at 2 weeks post their introduction, was resulting in more deaths than the virus itself. A reminder to be ever grateful that we live where we do. This article explains some of the COVID19-related issues re food security in Kenya - https://theconversation.com/why-covid-19-is-another-blow-fo. Interestingly, the authors dont mention the stockpiling of food (and inability of those without financial means to store quantities of fresh food) as an issue. We know this to be the case from communication with Georgina. We continue to support the staff at the nursery school with their usual salaries and will continue to send money for food for as long as we possibly can. If you would like to assist with this (and thank you to the many people who have already donated generously), please transfer money to: Hope Katolo Nursery School BSB 033349 Account 411858 Wed love you to drop us an email if you do donate (or include your name in the bank transfer), so that we can thank you in person . Stay well everyone and well keep in touch, Mel, Leanne & Georgina
08.01.2022 The world is needing some positive news. Here is a cute video of some of the kids at Hope Katolo dancing . Happy Friday everyone.

On behalf of Leanne and I, thank so much to everyone who makes the provision of this life-giving food a possibility xxx
01.01.2022 Hi Hope Katolo supporters, We hope that this message finds you well and managing as best you can in the challenging times that we find ourselves in. Check out this interview with Georgina, the head teacher of Hope Katolo Nursery School. We asked Georgina about the COVID19 situation in Kenya and how it is impacting the nursery school. Also, how the generosity of all of the wonderful supporters of the nursery school is making such a big difference to her life and the lives of... the children and staff at the school. It is an easy 15 minute watch and listen and can be found here: https://drive.google.com//1R0ALypCcuCkp5o01-CmNqgaBa/view If you are able and would like to donate some money to help continue this important work, the details are here: Hope Katolo Nursery School BSB 033349 Account 411858 Please note that, given the small nature of this charity, we are unable to issue tax deductible receipts. Thanks as always for your ongoing support. Please feel free to forward this to family and friends who you think may be interested.
