23.01.2022 Hey there, I’m Abi and I’m a Qualified and Australia Wide Accredited Equine Sports Massage Therapist serving the Bathurst/Orange/ and surrounding areas. I am fully insured and am a recognised Practitioner of the Equine Therapies Association of Australia (ETAA) Equine sports massage therapy is the therapeutic application of massage techniques applied to the horse using my hands and often special massage tools and gels, to enhance the function of tissue and promote relaxation... and wellbeing. Just like us, the horse is an athlete whose body and muscles need looking after. A horse’s body is made up of 60% muscle, making muscle therapeutics important. Massage is used to manipulate the soft tissues and compress the muscle fibres against the bone to cause those muscle fibres to spread apart. Massage aids in the removal of toxins and waste and whilst doing so, increasing the circulation and allowing healthy nutrients back into those muscles. Massage not only helps in relieving muscle spasms and pain, but it also helps to prevent muscle injury and tension, and additionally releasing endorphins that lower the pain response. Benefits of massage -Eliminates toxins -Enhances performance -Enhancement of muscle tone and lengthening of muscle fibres -Increases circulation -Increases flexibility, gait quality and range of motion -Increases healing of injury and reduces the the possibility of injury -Improve balance and posture -Improves disposition -Relation -Relieves muscle spams, knots and tension Indications of pain and discomfort -Biting -Kicking -Bolting -Bucking -Rearing -Changed disposition -Difficulty collecting -Inflammation -Lameness -Muscle spasm -Pigrooting -Decreased performance -Difficulty extending -Isolated sweating -Lethargy -Muscle rightness -Gait irregularity -Loss of condition -Overreaction to touch -Stiffness All of the above are indications of pain or discomfort and should be investigated. A session can take anywhere from an 1hr to an 1hr and a half depending on the situation. My sessions include the following; -All over body palpation -Whole body massage -Whole body stretch In 2019, I had the privilege of being able to attend a 3 day whole horse dissection in Adelaide by the incredible Sharon May-Davis. It completely blew my mind on just how everything is connected! I got to see first hand the muscles I work on in the flesh and how they move and connect with each other and everything else. I now see the muscles on the outside in a different perspective whilst I work on them.
