25.01.2022 Awwww bless! If you have visited the hospice lately, you may have met Coco. A gorgeous Labradoodle. Coco is bought in weekly by their owner, who was a lovely nurse of Hopewell for a number of years. ... Coco loves affection (and food) and loves visiting our residents. If you see Coco, be sure to give all the pats and love.

14.01.2022 . One of the great tragedies of the #COVID19 pandemic is that, to protect other people, we have not been able to gather around our beloveds' deathbeds. Sending... messages, speaking by phone, watching on video calls is a small consolation, but it doesn't allow us easily to say those very important messages: Thank you I'm sorry I forgive you I love you . . Usually, a loving group gathered around a deathbed tells stories, shares memories, teases and jokes, weeps and consoles, holds hands, offers hugs, strokes, rubs in hand cream - there is touching to reassure, comfort and accompany. We've lost all this during the pandemic, whatever the cause of death. We can't be there to console or to bear witness. . . This will make it even harder for us to fill in the gaps as we weave the story of our beloved's final hours and days. Telling the story is part of our ritual of mourning. Understanding the narrative, building it from everybody's memories, is an essential part of making sense of it all. . . I'm so grateful to hospitals and care homes that are keeping diaries. Little notes of significant moments: phone calls received, conversations with staff, hopes expressed for dear ones' futures; savouring an ice pop or a cup of tea; a favourite beer in the mouth care tray; the exact time of loss of consciousness; the time of that final breath. These diaries will be precious tools in the building of this person's final story, and a huge consolation to their bereaved loved ones. . . I'm proud to be a storyteller. I'm honoured to have been able to tell stories of deathbeds to show how the process is recognisable and consistent, even though each death is as individual as the dying person. I hope that these stories will really help those who couldn't be there to bear witness, to form a picture of the process and feel some consolation from that. . . The book is still on offer until May 31st in Canada and USA, link here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com//with-the/9780316504539/ . . Wishing us all peace of mind, consolation and understanding. This is a hard time. We are separated. But we are not alone. . . #BetterTogether #WiththeEndinMind See more

14.01.2022 Today at Hopewell we started the day with a celebration for our wonderful volunteers with a delicious breakfast out on the deck ... made with love by our Simply Divine team. We couldn't do this sacred service delivery to the sick, the dying and the children without you. Over 160 volunteers giving compassionate loving care at the end stage of life, to respite guests, and to the children grieving death or loss. Volunteers give generously and selflessly of their time and expertise in cooking, cleaning, coffee making, companioning, gardening, counselling, spiritual care, in the hospice, reception, reiki in respite, and accompanying children on their journey through grief as they help heal the heartache at Paradise Kids.
