We had planned to commit as many teams possible for the Winter 2020 season competition, due to many members keen to return. 23.01.2022 Coronavirus update from our President Paul Jones and the WBA Executive Team: We hope everyone is continuing to stay safe and look after each other during this d...ifficult time. On a basketball front, there are a few important updates we can provide. While there is no news on a return date for domestic competitions, Basketball Victoria has confirmed that its 12 month Licence Fee paid by players as part of the new registration through PlayHQ will not start until we are given the okay to return to the court. Therefore, there is no disadvantage to those who have already registered. As a result, for those who are in a financial position to do so, the WBA is encouraging junior domestic players to register now with your club and our senior domestic teams (and players) to register now with the WBA, and pay JUST the Basketball Victoria Licence Fee. The more players and teams registered before we get the go ahead to return to the court, the quicker we will be able to get our competitions back up and running. The WBA is developing a reactivation plan for a number of scenarios, including a shortened winter season and lengthened summer season, depending on our eventual recommencement date. Basketball Victoria has also confirmed there will be no VJBL or Big V games played prior to May 31st and will provide a further update on this in May. In the meantime, our WBA staff have been busy creating many FREE online resources and we encourage you to take advantage of these. There are live online programs, player resource skills videos and online coaching clinics, all produced to help you keep your skills sharp for when we return. 17.01.2022 Yesterday, the Victorian Government made announcements relating to the easing of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this included allowing people to participate in outdoor activities or train in community sport in groups of up to 10 people (plus a coach / supervisor). Basketball Victoria supports this approach, as it recognises that sport and exercise play a critical role in the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of Victorians, but importantly this must be balan...ced with the risk of transmitting coronavirus. While this provides an opportunity for many of us to get back into participating in basketball outside of our home environment, Basketball Victoria wants to emphasise that how we all collectively act in the coming weeks will directly affect the health of our community and our sports ability to return to more regular indoor activity in the near future. We are being provided an opportunity to enjoy a level of sport and exercise outdoors in the short term, but we must not compromise safety, nor the reputation of the sport at this vitally important time. For those wishing to participate outdoors we suggest you refer to Basketball Victoria’s Outdoor Training Guidelines that have been developed in line with government restrictions and the AIS Framework for Rebooting Sport. 15.01.2022 Unfortunately, with the extension to Stage 4 restrictions, our proposed VJBL Rep tryout dates in early October will not go ahead. We will continue to monitor th...e advice from government and Basketball Victoria and keep our community informed on new dates as soon as we can. BUT, in the meantime - do you want to give yourself the best chance of making a high team next year? And hear from the best WBA VJBL coaches, plus Big V players and coaches? Our Rep Prep Online Sessions are FREE and the perfect way to gear up both mentally and physically as we edge closer to returning to the court. The training sessions will be using Zoom communications and will run for 45 minutes. The session will feature 3 coaches from across the associations each week and are open to all existing VJBL players and any aspiring players hoping to tryout and make a team for the upcoming season. The sessions are on Wednesday at 5:00 pm until 5:45 pm. The program will run for 5 weeks starting on September 23rd, September 30, October 7, 14, and 21. 01.01.2022 Covid-19 member update from Paul Jones & the WBA Executive Team As many of you will have seen the Victorian government has announced lockdowns of specif...ic postcodes. Thankfully, no postcodes within Wyndham have been included, so our operations remain open and the dates we have outlined for a return to domestic competition remain in place. Of course, we will continue to monitor the situation and will act if further restrictions demand it. However, we know these lockdowns and the news of positive cases in some locals schools will impact a number of our members. On advice from the Victorian Government and Basketball Victoria, unfortunately any athlete, coach, spectator or official who meets any of the below criteria cannot partake in any WBA competitions, trainings or programs until advised by the relevant authority: a) Live within one of the locked down postcodes, or b) Have been advised to self-isolate by a government authority, or c) Have been advised to self-isolate by a school (e.g. Hoppers Crossing Secondary College) You can see Basketball Victoria’s latest update on Covid-19 information here: http://basketballvictoria.com.au/covid-19/ As outlined in that update, under 18s continue to operate under BV’s Orange-50 rating, while over 18s remain at Orange-20. The WBA continues to implement additional Covid-19 safety measures for all activities, including extra cleaning measures and hand sanitiser for all WBA activities. The VJBL has also announced that it will NOT return on July 17 and we’ll keep you up-to-date as we hear any further news on the season. There is still no return date for Big V at this stage. We thank our community for their understanding while we navigate the return to the court.
