21.01.2022 Happy OT Week!! This week we are celebrating all that we do as OT’s and taking a moment to reflect on what a huge year this has been! This year has seen us learn a whole new set of skills in providing Telehealth services. I am incredibly grateful to have had 2 amazing OT’s by my side as we embraced such huge change in how we provided services. We have had to be more flexible, creative and solution focussed than ever before. The amazing families that we support have equally ha...d to show huge flexibility to make OT work in a very different format. Thank you for supporting us and inspiring us everyday. We are incredibly grateful to be able to see you in person again! The theme for OT week is ‘Supporting Our Communities to Rebuild, Recover, Reengage’ following the bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic. We will be sharing lots of resources to support you and your family throughout the week. With Melbourne recording 0 new cases of COVID today it is certainly a day for us all to celebrate!! 19.01.2022 Great resource from the team at Raise The Bar Psychology!

17.01.2022 Handwriting is such a complex task and we are hearing that many kids are struggling with the written component of remote learning so we have put together a video for parents to help understand why your child might be struggling and exploring some simple strategies you can use to support your child at home and when they return to the classroom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGWz0Av0Gp0

17.01.2022 As an OT working with kids, I focus on so many different areas in therapy, from developing fine motor skills to addressing emotional regulation. After providing some therapy, I find it exciting when my kids start being my ’teacher’ and show me how they can write their name, catch a ball, or tie their shoe laces. There’s something special about a child becoming independent with tasks, and being so proud of themselves for persisting! It’s these moments that I especially cherish as a paediatric OT. 16.01.2022 Kids Club will return weekly in Term 2 on a Wednesday at 4:15 with Jess. This group is suitable for 5-7 year olds. Kids Club teaches the concepts of Social Thinking and allows for practice to problem solve in play with peers.

15.01.2022 Having established hand dominance is important for children to develop skill and strength with fine motor tasks e.g. drawing, cutting. If your child is continuing to swap hands it can be helpful to complete tasks that require the use of 2 hands (bimanual tasks). This encourages one hand to perform and practice in the dominant role. We can label this to the child as the doing hand (preferred hand), and the other hand as a helping hand.

14.01.2022 The skills involved in learning to write are called prewriting skills. These include skills that involve a child holding and using a pencil to draw, copy, and colour. The images below demonstrate important skills for children to master before being instructed in handwriting. Our Skills For School Online Program takes preschoolers through a structured and sequential series of activities to be completed each week over 10 weeks to develop prewriting skills in preparation for starting school. 12.01.2022 COVID has had a huge impact on children’s mental health. There are some great tips here to support your child’s mental health.

10.01.2022 Movement Break with Jess Encourage your child to try some tasks in standing instead of sitting this week. When your child is restless in the chair standing is an easy way to provide movement and use different muscles. For younger kids the dining table or adult desk is usually a good height. Nikita is pictured below in clinic. Our height adjustable tables have been a fantastic way to help us stay regulated whilst working via telehealth!

09.01.2022 I love my role as an OT working with children, providing early intervention and assisting children in learning life skills. It’s so fulfilling to see children work hard to improve and generalise their skills across different settings e.g. home and school. A child demonstrating resilience and noticing their competence is one of the most rewarding things I come across. Being apart of their journey is exciting and very special to me! Nikita #ThisisOT

07.01.2022 Great little video to help children and families learn more about ADHD

07.01.2022 Hand and finger strength is something we discuss regularly in OT. When kids don't have well developed hand and finger strength they may struggle with fine motor play (e.g. lego) or to hold a pencil and draw. Developing hand and finger strength is a great way to prepare your child for school. Our Skills For School Online Program has weekly hand and finger strengthening games that kids LOVE to play. Check one of the fun games below. To find out more about Skills Fro School head to https://skillsforschool.thinkific.com/

04.01.2022 Hand preference refers to the consistent use of one hand for the skilled work in different activities. Hand preference usually begins to develop between 2 to 4 years of age, however, it is common for children to swap hands during this time. Between 4 to 6 years of age, children will usually establish a clear hand preference. This allows the child to develop skill and strength with the preferred hand. If your child is not showing a consistent preference it can be helpful to observe their hand use in everyday activities (see images). Notice which hand is used more frequently, or is more skilled. Never force a child to use a specific hand, it is important that they decide hand preference on their own.

04.01.2022 Sometimes preschoolers can be reluctant to engage in drawing. If they haven't had success in the past they may actively avoid drawing and craft. This is a natural reaction and something adults forget we do too, consider how often you play sports that you don't feel confident in? To help build confidence it is important to make sure that the activity is at the right developmental level for the child so that they can experience success and want to try again next time but also b...e appropriately challenged. Pictured below we supported the child to build first, then modelled how to draw, to help build skill, confidence and most importantly a willingness to try again. You can do similar at home with legos, blocks, playdoh, build then draw. If your preschooler is needing support in developing fine motor skills our OTs are here to help or you may be interested in our Skills For School Online Program https://skillsforschool.thinkific.com/
