An article written by Horizons newest consultant Kieran Richardson outlines the current research on ACL injury and the role that surgery may or may not play https://www.physio-network.com/acl-surgery-no-longer-kneed/

24.01.2022 Our labour TENS Machine has arrived! If you are planning to have a natural birth, a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (TENS) unit is a simple, non-invasive, drug free tool that can help provide pain relief during the early stages of labour. The obstetric TENS works by sending small, safe pulses of electrical current via the pads attached to your skin and has a BOOST button which is used to give an extra surge of stimulation during a contraction. If you want to know more about TENS, the advantages and disadvantages, when and how to use one during labour or the hiring process, please email [email protected] for more information or call Horizon physio on 9245 7007.

24.01.2022 World Breastfeeding Week The first week in August is World Breastfeeding Week. This is a week that we promote the amazing health benefits of breastfeeding your baby. However, not all women choose to continue breastfeeding. This is due to a number of reasons. But fear not, physiotherapists can have a powerful role in supporting women to establish good breastfeeding practices and maintain lactation in the long term! Mastitis or breast tissue inflammation can be extremely pain...ful. Symptoms can include redness, increased skin temperature and feeling unwell. One of the greatest risks of developing mastitis is having had a previous episode. Early detection and management can assist in resolving lactation problems and reducing pain!! Antibiotics should not always be frontline treatment. The key to resolution is finding potential causes for each woman. Modalities for effective treatment offered at Horizon include: - THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND for inflammation - LOW LEVEL LASER for cracked nipples - LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE TAPING Horizon Physio we will have you back on track. 22.01.2022 Foot Strength Have you ever looked at a babies foot and noticed how strong and flexible they are? Our feet are designed to be strong, highly mobile and highly sensitive and yet somewhere along the way they have become weak and are a common source of pain and dysfunction. A big reason for this is because we spend our lives wearing thick bottomed shoes. Similar to our hands our feet are highly sensitive and designed to feel the ground while we walk and run. Without input they can slowly become weaker and less reactive. This not only has an affect on our ability to walk and run, but on injuries as the force not absorbed by the foot ends up higher up the chain, often in the knee.

21.01.2022 Merry Christmas from us at Horizon Physiotherapy! We hope you are all having a wonderful and festive time with family and friends. Stay safe and we will see you all in the new year! The clinic will remain open as usual over the Christmas/New Year period.

21.01.2022 This is Josh expertly showing us the Side Plank and Twist. This is a common late-stage exercise used by our team of Physiotherapists to improve shoulder, scapula and core strength. It is great for athletes who are rehabilitating or preventing shoulder injuries.

18.01.2022 Back in the Sky How long does it take to recover from a full ACL rupture? Steve fully ruptured his ACL and MCL in a skydiving accident in November 2019. 17.01.2022 What sort of exercise is appropriate for Lower Back Pain? Recent evidence has shown exercise to be superior to stretching, hands-on treatment, pharmacological and surgical treatments for low back pain. But what exercise is best? The short answer is that pretty much any exercise is better than none. Individualised exercise, prescribed by a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist will help guide you through the most appropriate pathway for your pain. But the most important thing is to keep moving, even after your pain is long gone. Exercise and movement does NOT wear down your joints but instead will keep them strong and resilient. It is the best way to stay physically and mentally healthy.

16.01.2022 I can tell you from personal experience that our new obstetric TENS machine can be very valuable during labour. My wife gave birth to our beautiful daughter on the 6th of August and during her labour we used movement, fitball exercises, massage, heat, mindfulness meditation and our portable obstetric TENS machine. She felt that it really helped her get through her contractions, especially in early and mid-labour. If you are nearing the end of your pregnancy this machine is available for hire from Horizon Physiotherapy. Call 92457007 or book a session online at www.horizonphysio.com.au

16.01.2022 I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, what now? First of all, welcome to the club! The vast majority of people over the age of 30 have some degree of hip or knee joint degeneration or osteoarthritis, it is just a normal part of the aging process. If your first though is "Oh no, does that mean I need surgery?!" then don't worry, joint replacements should only be considered if the arthritis is very severe and you have exhausted all other options. In the mean time there i...s a lot you can do to improve your pain and function. The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) published an article outlining 11 recommendations for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis based on the current evidence. I have outlined a few of the points below. 1. Treatment of OA should be individualised to each person based on their specific symptoms and goals - make sure the program that you follow is designed just for you. 2. Treatment should include: education, activity pacing, a regular exercise program, weight loss if required and adjustment of mechanical factors 3. Exercise should be regular (built into normal routine), individualised and involve strengthening, aerobic exercise and mobility. The GLAD program run at Horizon Physiotherapy is designed specifically to address all of these factors. If you have OA and would like to know more book in to see one of our physiotherapists for a consult. Call 92457007 or book online at www.horizonphysio.com.au See more

13.01.2022 Should I Be Concerned About the Arthritis on My Scan? Osteoarthritis is a very common finding on scans. A recent systematic review looked at 5397 knee scans (MRIs) in people WITHOUT any knee pain or injury and found almost 1 in 5 people under 40 and 1 in 2 people over 40 had significant changes on their scan such as cartilage lesions, meniscal tears, bone bruises or bone spurs. All of these people with anatomical changes and NO pain means that it is entirely possible and even common to live with these changes pain-free.

13.01.2022 Osteoporosis and Bone Health Peak bone mass is reached when youre in your late twenties, and, after this it is vital to continue to get adequate calcium, exercise and vitamin D to maintain the bones you've built. Poor bone health affects 2 in 3 Australians and can lead to serious fractures which can cause chronic pain, disability and loss of independence. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose calcium and other minerals, making them fragile and more likely to fracture. In Aust...ralia, osteoporosis affects 1.2 million people. This number is expected to increase as our population grows older. Osteoporosis affects more than 1 in 5 women over the age of 65 years, compared with around 1 in 20 men. Women are at greater risk of developing osteoporosis because of the rapid drop in the hormone oestrogen during menopause. In men, testosterone levels decline more gradually. As a result, bone mass in men usually remains adequate until later in life. Taking some simple actions can give your bones the best chance of remaining strong and resilient. Lifting weights or resistance training is a great way to maintain strong bones. Jogging, aerobics, tennis, dancing, netball or any exercise that is weight bearing and done on your feet will benefit your bones. Aim for regular exercise, at least three times per week. If your not sure where to start, or need more guidance to manage your bone health, come in for an assessment and planning session. Call 92457007 or book online at www.horizonphysio.com.au See more

11.01.2022 Baby Lunges This is the second exercise in my series of easy exercises to do for parents. See the previous post on pram squats for another great exercise to do with your bub. Step 1: Make sure you have a very good, safe hold on your baby with their head supported. Alternatively you could use a safe baby carrier (while still using hands for extra support). Step 2: Bring one leg forward and drop down into a lunge position. Try to have your back knee under your hip and your fr...ont knee in line with your front foot. Step 3: Push right back up to standing with feet together. Make sure to keep the movement slow and smooth and try not to "bounce" your baby too much See more

11.01.2022 1. Immediate results Sound meditation makes relaxation easier and quicker than most other practices. The gentle sounds and vibrations almost immediately put you into an alpha-brainwave state, creating a calm, relaxed and meditative state of the mind and body. You simply lay back and let the sound do the work for you. 2. Feel the good vibes ... Sound vibrations can be felt in the physical body, through a harmonic phenomenon called sympathetic resonance. The vibrations move through the body shifting areas of muscle and nervous tension and in some cases pain, leaving the body feeling relaxed and restored. It’s a little like having a massage you really do feel the good vibes. 3. Experience transcendence The experience of sound meditation can be powerful, enabling some people to reach higher levels of consciousness and mind states. Sound offers another dimension to meditation practice and is suitable for meditators across all levels of experience. Come and feel the good vibes at Horizon Physio Saturdays 3-4pm https://events.humanitix.com/horizon

10.01.2022 Band Cycling This exercise is a tough core exercise that will also help to condition your Glutes and Hip flexors. Have a band around your feet, holding in a crunch position with legs at tabletop (up at 90 degrees). Straighten one leg down towards the ground, keeping the other at tabletop, then return back to starting position and repeat with the opposite leg. Its important not to feel like your abdominals are pursing or doming out while doing this exercise as that is a signal that you are inappropriately bracing. For more tough exercises like this join our BodyFit crew at 7:10pm on Wednesday night.

10.01.2022 Whats your COVID silver lining? We are so lucky in Perth at the moment to only have minor COVID restrictions in place. Maybe you discovered the importance of spending more quality time with your family, like Alex you finessed your sourdough making skills, or like Ellie you learned some amazing knitting skills? At Horizon we found ways of improving our sanitation and safety standards and have continued to appreciate our amazing local community. Comment below what you found positive during this time.

09.01.2022 Exercises to Improve your Golf Swing Rib cage (thoracic) mobility is an important factor for many sports performance including swimming, throwing, and golf. Give this exercise a go: A-Frame stretch. Get yourself into a squat position, and press your forearm between the two knees. Hold this position as you take t...he other out and up in an arc motion. Repeat 5 times each side. 07.01.2022 Should your child wear shoes to run? This is an interesting question because you want to give your kids all the support they can get and prevent injury wherever possible. But is wearing heavy bottomed running shoes accomplishing this? Part 1 will shoes help prevent injury? As a species we have been running for 2 million years and because of this, running is engrained into our DNA. It is the way we hunt prey, escape from predators and have survived as a species, but will wear...ing running shoes enhance this or get in the way of it? A study in 2017 looked at children runners in a country known for its running - Kenya. Children who were habitually barefoot runners had an injury prevalence of 8% compared to children who wore shoes having a MUCH higher injury prevalence of 61% There are many things to consider when buying shoes for your children but remember that more support is not always better. 05.01.2022 The Cost of Back Pain Back pain can be a chronic, debilitating condition and can have a huge impact on your life. It also has a massive financial impact. In 2016 the US spent an estimated $3.1 trillion (17.9% of GDP and an average of $9655 per person) on healthcare. Of the 154 conditions reported on, low back and neck pain had the highest amount of health care spending with an estimated $134.5 billion. Other musculoskeletal disorders account for the second highest and diabetes the third highest. There is a similar story in Australia where where 50% of Australians have back pain in the past month and back pain is the most common condition keeping older Australians out of work. This huge financial burden is one of the many reasons it is imperative to manage your back pain well so that it doesn't become chronic.

05.01.2022 Can marathon running actually help my knees? The age old fable that running will "wear out" your knees has been long disproved. We have proven that a moderate amount of running can actually protect your knee cartilage and may prevent you from needed knee replacements later in life. But how will running long distance affect me if I am a novice runner? A study released last year researched first-time marathon runners and completed MRI's on their knees before they started tra...ining and after they finished their race. The results showed that the vast majority of people had damage to the knee joint pre-training and had significantly improved after completing the marathon! Some patella (knee cap) joint damage was increased, but without symptoms. This study shows what we have known for a long time - movement and load is imperative for joint health. 04.01.2022 Change your relationship with pain! Mindful meditation is proven to help people who live with chronic pain by providing ways to explore and modify physical and emotional responses. The body scan is a common practice used to focus attention on pleasant and unpleasant sensations in the body and the breath is used to gently soften and release tension. ... As we scan the body in this mindful way, we begin to notice that the sensations in the body shift and change. As we get to know pain and learn to breathe into it, the intensity of pain shifts. Clinical trials have shown that this practice can lead to significant reduction in pain intensity. The other part of the practice involves tuning into our emotional responses to pain. By listening closely to our emotional response to pain and the thoughts and feelings we attach to it, we can change our relationship with pain. Soundwaves integrates these practices with sound. In a sound meditation the sound vibrations add another dimension to the experience, moving through the body and releasing tension like a massage of sound.
