22.01.2022 The main front lower leg muscle, one which raises the foot (up and in) is rarely stretched sufficiently. Tying the laces too tight ('lace bite') or wearing above ankle boots for long periods of time can exacerbate tension and tightness of this muscle.

20.01.2022 For those people wishing to attend stretch yoga classes there are a number of video clips which I have posted on Youtube which may help to explain an expand upon what you already practice (or don't). Wishing you well, Andrew (Barefoot Physio) https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCyM2KvjrPae1A8jgaUOu36g

20.01.2022 The socially engaged survival response which, believe it or not, humans have become increasingly physiologically capable of bringing into action, could be termed: the 'Friend' response. Whilst it might begin as a survival response utilised to defuse intensifying situations, it can also continue to 'hum' as a default state engendering a reciprocally optimal physiologic expression. We somehow synchronise with each other and at times feel/think the same as the other(s), forming a harmony of interaction

16.01.2022 Asana, a Sanskrit word, means seat. This was the term originally used in the early yoga texts to emphasis the importance of the sitting position for meditation. Physiologically, sitting cross legged enables greater descending movement of the diaphragm and facilitates enhanced stability of the spine. The poses outlined in the photos below are a great practice for releasing/openning one of the main hip rotator muscles in order to adopt cross legged positions more easily. Such... a stretch is especially important for people who spend long periods sitting in the conventional manner (chair based sitting). Notice the progression and the use of a bolster. Too many times people over exert in this pose, whilst survival responses are unearthing, thereby limiting the ability for health to express itself. Gently and steadily at the same time as relinquishing over control. This way both the 'listening' and that which is 'listened' to (and the 'listener') are one. Notice the perpendicular position of the front lower leg to the body (different to the 'conventional pigeon pose) and the orienting to the foot as a deepening investigation. See more

12.01.2022 No S.T.R.E.T.C.H / Breath work / TRE yoga class this Thursday 20 Feb due to Andy being away teaching in overseas. The next class will be on the following Thursday on 27th Feb. Thank you :)

11.01.2022 The 'Tonic Immobilisation' of a portion of the body is a protection response engendered to act as a 'last ditch' attempt to: 1) Conserve energy ready for a last minute attack. 2) Feign death to a would be predator. 3) Detract from reaction/movement driven stimulus. A fainting goat may be an example of what happens in a more isolated manner in humans. It often happens in a big way with many animals (including predators such as Crocodiles and Sharks) but seems to be 'shaken of...f' in far less time than insidiously born chronic holding patterns in humans... Could this mean that our incredible faculty of memory/experience/thought works against us due to the human minds habit of repeating the stored event(s)?....If so might this override the persons capacity to access an inherent physiologic release seen in many animals and even young human children? 09.01.2022 The first pose is a popular pose for those wishing to relieve tightness and/or tension between the lower back and hips. The mechanical aim is to encourage the leading shin (left in this case) towards the upper body rather than mimicking a frogs leg (by taking the knee away from the body). The lateral hip rotators will get a very beneficial sense of themselves with this stretch and release potential tightness of muscles around the sciatic nerve. The bolster under the pelvis pr...ovides greater focus on the hip joint by flexing the lower spine curve thereby taking up the 'slack' of additional joint movements. The second photo just highlights the benefits of 'sukham' (a Sanskrit word roughly meaning: 'providing ease'). This is somewhat different from 'taking it easy' as with sukham there is an attentive awareness whilst easing into deeper aspects of a pose. Props and supports can be gradually discarded as the ease follows the deepening. Any body movement, posture or breathing pattern, attended to with awareness, has the potential to unlock patterns of experience stored in the body. Certain patterns remaining subconscious for too long will form vicious cycles of physiologic unease. Yoga can help unearth such patterns in a palatable manner. To elaborate; subtle feelings, or the upsurge of a memory or memories, which potentially arise at any time or place (but which are more often than not suppressed), can be enough to evoke related survival responses. By being in a state of 'attentive-steady-ease' such survival responses get a chance to run their course, enabling the feeling and/or pattern of experience to discharge in a natural body-based manner. This provides another form of ease, this time one full of vitality.

06.01.2022 Murmurating Starlings: F for Friend Where humans have developed upon impressive physiological attributes, such as the ventral vagal nerve networks and mirror neurones, some species, such as these starlings, seem to act and react to each other so quickly that it would require a speed of communication far faster than mere nerve impulses would allow. Perhaps quantum entanglement is the only answer close to understanding it....but how many people really understand quantum entangl...ement? Or, maybe it's more fulfilling to feel, imbibe and enjoy it's mystery.... ....and by this happening we could be beyond the limitations of our nerve impulses.. See more

04.01.2022 It is very useful to become aware of the wrists & hands before delving too deep into the class. Such awareness invites a 'fluid preparedness' for poses involving hand contact with the floor.

03.01.2022 Discharge of accumulated 'Fight/Flight' tension performed, in this case, by a duck. A human might do this by way of going for a run or frequenting the gym. However, the duck appears to discharge the tension in a reflexive manner as opposed to the 'doing' of a run or a gym session. This might mean that we, as humans, separate the event from the release and rely on the thought of 'getting rid of' rather than accessing the feeling of discharge.
