17.01.2022 Dr Mason looks back at many years of serving Hornsby DR Richard Mason, a medical institution in Hornsby for nearly half a century, has quietly packed up his stethoscope and equipment for a well-earned retirement. Having graduated as a doctor in 1956, Dr Mason was an invaluable member of The Original Hornsby Family Practice for over 49 years, and brought into it in 1970.... The 86-year-old Hornsby local has a remarkable memory as he recalled the numerous doctors he has worked with at the popular practice, which was begun by Dr Tristan Holcombe, who had served in WWI. Dr Masons staff at the practice speak highly of his dedication, not only to medicine but to the environment, bird watching and wildlife conservation. Dr Mason shrugs off all the attention of him leaving, saying: I dont think I am a very interesting person. Dr Mason, who has treated thousands of patients, said it is the right time to call it day, having suffered an injury to his left hip six years ago. I come from a long line of teachers and my dad and mum were also teachers, Dr Mason said. Dad suggested that I should be a doctor when I was 17, though at that time I had wanted to be either a ship builder or architect. I am glad I did medicine as I am better person because of it. In those days we saw a lot of patients during home visits because most of them did not have cars. Things have changed a lot regarding getting around because those days you get around Hornsby in about two minutes, now it takes more than 20 minutes. Dr Mason was president of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia NSW branch for nine years and is involved with Birding NSW. So how will he spent the start of retirement: Tidying up the mess at home because I have heaps of papers at home.
